Herein, we report multidisciplinary treatment of a patient with synchronous development of primary MALT lymphoma of the duodenum and gastric cancer. A 70-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for examination of a gastric cancer initially diagnosed by a local medical doctor. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed an elevated lesion with a central ulcer in the lower body of the stomach, and a partially whitish aggregated lesion in the descending portion of the duodenum. Histopathological examination of biopsy specimens from the gastric lesion showed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, and duodenal specimens showed low-grade MALT lymphoma composed of atypical lymphoid cells with a lymphoepithelial lesion. The patient underwent distal gastrectomy with regional lymph node dissection for the gastric cancer. Histological examination showed muscularis propria invading adenocarcinoma with two lymph node metastases. After operation, four courses of systemic rituximab treatment were administered for the MALT lymphoma, followed by adjuvant S-1 (tegafur/gimeracil/oteracil) chemotherapy for the gastric cancer. In the 4 months after operation, the patient was well with no evidence of recurrence. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second reported case of synchronous gastric adenocarcinoma and duodenal MALT lymphoma in the English literature.

In 2007 the two senior authors wrote a review on the structure and function of the endothelial glycocalyx layer (Weinbaum in Annu Rev Biomed Eng 9121-167, 2007). Since then there has been an explosion of interest in this hydrated gel-like structure that coats the luminal surface of endothelial cells that line our vasculature due to its important functions in (A) basic vascular physiology and (B) vascular related diseases. This review will highlight the major advances that have occurred since our 2007 paper.

A literature search mainly focusing on the role of the glycocalyx in the two major areas described above was performed using electronic databases.

In part (A) of this review, the new formulation of the century old Starling principle, now referred to as the Michel-Weinbaum glycoclayx model or revised Starling hypothesis, is described including new subtleties and physiological ramifications. New insights into mechanotransduction and release of nitric oxide due to fluid shear stress sensed by the glycoc review, many important developments in our basic understanding of GCX structure, function and role in diseases have been described since the 2007 paper. Limited information is available describing advance care planning (ACP) within correctional facilities, despite its increasing relevance due to the ageing population in prisons and the high rates of complex medical comorbidities. In Western countries, self-determination with respect to making future medical decisions is a human right that prisoners do not lose when they are remanded into custody. ACP enables individuals to plan for their health and personal care so their values, beliefs and preferences are made known to inform future decision-making, for a time when they can no longer communicate their decisions. This paper examines the limited academic literature relating to ACP within prisons to identify barriers and facilitators that influence the uptake of ACP and advance care directive (ACD) documentation. The GUI is called Dalton Input Editor, and by facilitating the generation of the prerequisite DALTON.INP input file it provides a simple solution to increase the user-friendliness of the Dalton Program resulting in a more widespread application of the Dalton program.The present study aims at investigating the impact of land cover features in enhancing or mitigating Land Surface Temperature (LST) in a semi-arid tropical metropolitan city of Bengaluru, India. Spatial distribution of LST and land cover types of the area were examined in the circumferential direction, and the contribution of land cover classes on LST was studied over 28 years. Urban growth and LST were modelled using Landsat and MODIS data for the years 1989, 2001, 2005 and 2017 based on the concentric ring approach. The study provides an efficient methodology for modelling and parameterisation of LST and urban growth by fitting an inverse S-curve into urban density (UD) and mean LST data. In addition, multiple linear regression models which could effectively predict the LST distribution based on land cover types were developed for both day and night time. Based on the analysis of remotely sensed data for LST, it is observed that over the years, urban core area has increased circumferentially from 5 to 10 km, and the urban growth has spread towards outskirts beyond 15 km from the city centre.
