Herein, we reviewed the responses and scientific researches from seven selected countries on the policies and legalization of TM/HMs to treat COVID-19, and also analyzed the major challenges and concerns to utilize the traditional knowledge and resource.Understanding the role of neuromodulators of socio-affective processing is important to ensure psychological wellbeing during older years. Here, we investigated the link between blood serotonin levels and brain and behavioral responses to emotional information in healthy elderly. A priori regions of interest (ROI) were selected due to their role in emotion processing and their dense serotonergic innervation. Correlation analyses were performed between ROI-specific responses to emotional stimuli and whole blood serotonin levels. We found significant negative associations between serotonin and functional activity for the bilateral insula, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and subgenual gyrus. No association with behavioral measures survived correction for multiple testing. Our results mirror prior pharmacological and genetic work on the link between serotonin and emotional brain reactivity in younger adults. Given the involvement of serotonin in several age-related changes, our study encourages future research to characterize the role of this neuromodulator in emotion processing across the lifespan.Interdependent self-construal (SC) is thought to lead to a more holistic cognitive style that emphasizes the processing of the background scene of a focal object. At present, little is known about whether the structural properties of the brain might underlie this functional relationship. Here, we examined the gray matter (GM) volume of three cortical regions involved in scene processing -- a cornerstone of contextual processing. Study 1 tested 78 European American non-student adults and found that interdependent (vs. independent) SC predicts higher GM volume in the parahippocampal place area (PPA), one of the three target regions. Testing both European American and East Asian college students (total N = 126), Study 2 replicated this association. Moreover, the GM volume of all the three target regions was greater for East Asians than for European Americans. Our findings suggest that there is a structural neural underpinning for the cultural variation in cognitive style.Anti-drought is a global challenge. The addition of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) in soil can lower down the water percolation and evaporation. However, the salt-tolerance and repeating water absorbency (RWA) of prepared SAPs have not satisfied the requirements for implementation. This research investigated the influence of cation valence (Na+, Ca2+ and Al3+) on the structural variations of a crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose (CCMC) using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) cross linked by epichlorohydrin (ECH). The results showed that higher addition of NaOH resulted in higher water absorbency (WA) due to the existence of more carboxyl group. see more The prepared CCMC sample with 5% CMC and 3% NaOH (CCMC53) was a qualified SAP with WA of 969.0 g/g in deionized water. The salt resistance and the hydrophilicity of sample CCMC53 decreased with the increase of cation valence in the solution. The introduction of Na+ resulted in the replacement of H+ from carboxyl group in sample CCMC53-Na. The coordination of carboxyl group and Ca2+ was bidentate chelating and tridentate bridging for carboxyl group and Al3+. The introduction polyvalent cations benefited the stabilization of carboxyl group, however, retarded the swelling ability of sample CCMC53 and hence resulted in lower WACS. The RWA of sample CCMC53 in deionized water and salt solution dropped the most in the first absorption cycle and then reached constant after a few more cycles. It was necessary to control the first swelling degree of SAP in order to keep the RWA at a higher level. In this paper, 3 different biocatalysts of β-galactosidase from Kluyveromyces lactis have been prepared by immobilization in chitosan activated with glutaraldehyde (Chi_Glu_Gal), glyoxyl agarose (Aga_Gly_Gal) and agarose coated with polyethylenimine (Aga_PEI_Gal). These biocatalysts have been used to catalyze the synthesis of lactulose from lactose and fructose. Aga-PEI-Gal only produces lactulose at 50 °C, and not at 25 or 37 °C, Aga_Gly_Gal was unable to produce lactulose at any of the assayed temperatures while Chi_Glu_Gal produced lactulose at all assayed temperatures, although a lower yield was obtained at 25 or 37 °C. The pre-incubation of this biocatalyst at 50 °C permitted to obtain similar yields at 25 or 37 °C than at 50 °C. The use of milk whey instead of pure lactose and fructose produced an improvement in the yields using Aga_PEI_Gal and a decrease using Chi_Glu_Gal. The operational stability also depends on the reaction medium and of biocatalyst. This study reveals how enzyme immobilization may greatly alter the performance of β-galactosidase in a kinetically controlled manner, and how medium composition influences this performance due to the kinetic properties of β-galactosidase.7α-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (7α-HSDH) plays an important role in the efficient biotransformation of taurochenodeoxycholic acid (TCDCA) to tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA). In this paper, a novel NADP(H)-dependent 7α-HSDH (named J-1-1) was discovered, heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli and biochemically characterized. J-1-1 exhibited high enzymatic activities. The specific activities of J-1-1 toward TCDCA, glycochenodeoxycholic acid (GCDCA) and ethyl benzoylacetate (EBA) were 188.3 ± 0.2, 217.6 ± 0.4, and 20.0 ± 0.2 U·mg-1, respectively, in 50 mM Glycine-NaOH, pH 10.5. Simultaneously, J-1-1 showed high thermostability; 73% of its activity maintained after heat treatment at 40 °C for 100 h. Particularly noteworthy is that magnesium ion could stabilize the structure of J-1-1, resulting in the enhancement of its enzymatic activity and thermostability. The enzymatic activity of J-1-1 increased 40-fold in the presence of 50 mM Mg2+, and T0.5 increased by approximately 6 °C. Furthermore, after heat treatment at 40 °C for 20 min, the control group only retained 52% of the residual enzyme activity, while the residual enzyme activity of the experimental group was still 77% of the J-1-1 enzyme activity with Mg2+ and without heat treatment.
