A novel biomaterial was prepared by the immobilization of Phlebia gigantea cells in the medium containing lignocellulosic waste and used for the first time in the bioremediation purpose. The developed new biocomposite possesses higher Pb(II) retention potential when compared with the free microbial cells. It could remove Pb(II) up to 74.11% at a biosorbent dosage of 4.0 g L-1. Surface characterization was carried out through zeta potential, EDX, SEM, and IR studies to understand the metal-biocomposite interactions. The biosorption amount at equilibrium slightly decreased with the increase of the solution temperature. Kinetic data indicated Pb(II) biosorption onto suggested biocomposite fits well with the pseudo-first-order model. Biosorption equilibrium data suited Langmuir model with the highest coefficient of determination values. The immobilized material reached to maximum monolayer Pb(II) retention capacity (1.449 × 10-4 mol g-1) within the short equilibrium time (10 min). The designed biocomposite was also adapted to continuous flow mode sorption process. Regeneration tests by dynamic flow mode confirmed reutilization potential of biocomposite.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)/aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) regulate the expression of target genes, including drug transporter genes which harbor xenobiotic response element (XRE) in their promoter regions. TJ-M2010-5 Thus, PAHs/AhR could alter the toxicokinetic profile of many nephrotoxic drugs, including aminoglycosides. In the current study, we investigated the expression and localization of AhR and megalin in rat kidney. Furthermore, we investigated whether AhR and its ligands could modulate the expression of megalin and consequently the gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity (GN) in rats. Both megalin and AhR receptors are expressed in the proximal tubules of the rat kidney. Treatment with AhR agonist benzo(a)pyrene aggravated GN as indicated by a significant increase in serum creatinine, BUN, KIM1, NAGL, CD-86, and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio. On the other hand, treatment with AhR antagonist resveratrol ameliorated GN as manifested by a pronounced decrease in the aforementioned parameters. The effects of AhR ligands on GN were associated with altered expression of megalin receptor.PURPOSE Survivors of breast cancer (BC) on the non-dominant side have more persistent deficits than those with cancer on the dominant limb. What is not known is whether those with BC use their involved upper limbs more, less, or at the same level as women without BC. Accelerometer use offers a quantifiable method to measure activity levels of upper limbs. The purpose of this study was to quantify the activity levels of the non-dominant involved limb among survivors of BC and compare these values to their dominant limb, as well as the non-dominant limb of a control group. METHODS Participants (n = 30) were women with unilateral BC on the non-dominant limb, diagnosed between 6 and 24 months prior to data collection, and a matched healthy group of women as controls. Participants completed the following questionnaires medical and demographics, Brief Fatigue Inventory, Brief Pain Inventory - Short form, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), and Beck Depression Index. Participants wore an accelerometer on each wrist during waking hours for 7 days. Arm activity was measured using vector magnitude activity counts extracted from the accelerometers. RESULTS There were no significant differences in total vector magnitude activity counts between groups for either limb. Within group dominant to non-dominant comparison was significantly different (p ≤ 0.001). No significant difference in pain was present but significant differences for fatigue (p = 0.002), depression (p = 0.004), and DASH scores (p = 0.035) were present. CONCLUSIONS Women with non-dominant BC use their involved limb similar to healthy controls but less than their dominant limb.Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) is a life-saving technology that can cure otherwise incurable diseases, but imposes significant physiologic stress upon recipients. This stress leads to short-term toxicity and mid- to long-term physical function impairment in some recipients. Exercise interventions have demonstrated preliminary efficacy in preserving physical function in HCT recipients, but the role of these interventions prior to HCT (prehabilitative) is less known. We tested a 5- to 12-week, prehabilitative higher intensity home-based aerobic exercise intervention in a randomized study of alloHCT candidates. Of 113 patients screened, 34 were randomized to control or intervention groups, 16 underwent pre- and post-intervention peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) testing, and 12 underwent pre- and post-intervention 6-min walk distance (6MWD) testing. No significant differences in VO2peak or 6MWD were seen pre- to post-intervention between intervention and control groups, but final numbers of evaluable participants in each group were too small to draw inferences regarding the efficacy of the intervention. We conclude that the design of our prehabilitative intervention was not feasible in this pilot randomized study, and make recommendations regarding the design of future exercise intervention studies in alloHCT.AIMS Adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended for patients with curatively resected colorectal cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of unmet supportive care needs and anxiety on the initiation of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS This is a retrospective study from a single tertiary referral hospital. Patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer who met the inclusion criteria were included. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and modified 34-item Supportive Care Needs Survey (SCNS-SF34) were applied to assess patient's anxiety level and unmet needs. The time intervals between initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy and operation were recorded. Factors associated with delayed initiation of chemotherapy were investigated in univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS A total of 135 patients with colorectal cancer were included. In total, 16.3% (22/135) and 5.2% (7/135) reported symptoms of anxiety and depression. In multivariate analysis, low to moderate income status, postoperative complications, anxiety, and high level of unmet needs are independent risk factors for late initiation of chemotherapy.
