During the recovery period, rapid proliferation in a significant fraction of IBCs reseeded new foci of infection through bacterial shedding and host cell exfoliation. These insights reinforce a dynamic role for IBCs as harbors of bacterial persistence, with significant consequences for non-compliance with antibiotic regimens.Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a complication after deep venous thrombosis, causing considerable disability in affected patients. In this review, we present the aetiology, pathophysiology, risk factors and diagnosis of PTS and discuss different treatments with a special focus on endovascular treatment for iliac vein obstruction, which is documented as a safe, effective and durable treatment for severe PTS. Although treatment of PTS in Denmark currently only is based on conservative strategy, we would like to encourage, that endovascular treatment should be considered as a treatment option in these patients.Acute onset back pain is a common reason for referral to primary health care or emergency departments. In this review, the different spine fracture types are highlighted, and a treatment algorithm is proposed. CT is the modality of choice when a spine fracture is suspected. MRI should be performed when disc or ligamentous lesions are suspected or in patients with known ankylosis or diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. Treatment is mainly conservative with bracing, but unstable fractures and patients with neurological deficits should be treated surgically.Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative movement disorder with a broad spectrum of both motor- and non-motor symptoms. A new top-down model for pathogenesis has recently been suggested, supporting the hypothesis on onset of prodromal non-motor features several years before motor symptoms. Non-motor symptoms have a high prevalence and a substantial effect on quality of life and disease burden. Tacrolimus There are limited therapies available for non-motor deficits, although increased focus on pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments raises quality of life among patients, which is summarised and discussed in this review.Training may relieve symptoms in patients with mild to severe hip osteoarthritis and in patients who have received a total hip arthroplasty. Patients may train like healthy individuals. The effectiveness of training is dependent on sufficient dose and intensity. In this review, we suggest to prioritise research performed in the pre-clinical or in the mild to moderate stage of hip osteoarthritis where there is insufficient evidence on whether training has a disease-modifying effect or not. We also suggest that trials with long-term follow-up are performed for these patient groups. This review summarises the present knowledge of acute compartment syndrome, which is a time-critical diagnosis threatening both life and limb of the affected patients. Acute compartment syndrome is a clinical diagnosis, which in equivocal cases can be supported by direct intra-compartmental pressure measurement and laboratory values. Imaging can detect fractures; and non-invasive monitoring is under investigation but has not yet found clinical use. The treatment is a surgical fasciotomy, and this should be performed acutely. If diagnosis is made more than 24-48 hours after onset of symptoms, non-operative treatment should be considered.Xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction impact oral health and quality of life and are mainly caused by the intake of medications, chronic disorders like Sjögren's syndrome, and head and neck radiation. Other aetiologies may be local diseases of the salivary glands including infections, cancer, or obstructive diseases of the salivary ducts. Management strategies are primarily alleviating symptoms. Current investigations show promising results in stem cell treatment. In this review, we want to provide comprehension of the aetiologies, evaluation, and management of xerostomia and hyposalivation.Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in Denmark. In 15% of the patients with metastatic breast cancer (mBC) an overexpression of the HER2 protein on the tumour cells, amplification of the HER2-gene or both are present. HER2-positive mBC is associated with poor disease prognosis. The discovery of HER2 led to the development of HER2-targeting monoclonal antibodies significantly improving survival for patients with HER2-positive mBC as summarised in this review. The future brings even more HER2-targeting drugs, which further can contribute to the palliative treatment of HER2-postive mBC patients.Swimming-induced pulmonary oedema (SIPE) is a rare condition, where hemodynamic changes associated with immersion in water and swimming induces pulmonary oedema. Here, we report a case with a 57-year old very fit female triathlete experiencing critical lung edema during low intensity open water swimming. We speculate, that SIPE in this particular patient was caused by a combination of factors 1) Stress-induced diastolic dysfunction, 2) tendency to vasoconstriction upon stress and 3) possibly paroxysmal atrial fibrillation induced by increased atrial pressure during the event. This is a case report of an adult female with omental infarction caused by internal herniation and omental torsion. The patient, who had no previous surgical record, presented with three days of pain in the right upper quadrant. Ultrasound evaluation showed no signs of cholecystitis, after which an abdominal computed tomography confirmed the diagnosis. The patient underwent laparoscopic omentectomy, with an uneventful recovery. This case highlights the importance of radiological and surgical awareness of this rare condition.Older patients admitted to the emergency departments represent a heterogeneous group, some are frail with reduced reserve capacity and without ability to compensate to acute illness. They often present with nonspecific complaints and atypical presentation and are at-risk of complications and adverse events. These patients need a fast comprehensive interdisciplinary and multicomponent assessment and intervention to reduce the risk of further functional decline and to optimize their overall health status, independency and quality of life. This is the purpose of acute geriatrics.
