The clathrate-I borosilicide K8-xBySi46-y (0.8 ≤x≤ 1.2 and 6.4 ≤y≤ 7.2; space group Pm3[combining macron]n) was prepared in sealed tantalum ampoules between 900 °C and 1000 °C. By high-pressure preparation at 8 GPa and 1000 °C, a higher boron content is achieved (x = 0.2, y = 7.8). Crystal structure and composition were established from X-ray diffraction data, chemical analysis, WDX spectroscopy, and confirmed by 11B and 29Si NMR, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The compositions are electron-balanced according to the Zintl rule within one estimated standard deviation. The lattice parameter varies with composition from a = 9.905 Å for K7.85(2)B7.8(1)Si38.2(1) to a = 9.968(1) Å for K6.80(2)B6.4(5)Si39.6(5).A facile and single-step nickel oxide-dispersed in situ grown 3-D graphitic forest engrained carbon foam (NiO-CNF-CF)-based electrode was fabricated for high-performance microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The structures, photoluminescence and magnetic properties of the three compounds were investigated in detail. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the three compounds are isostructural and the Ln3+ ions show an unusual six-coordinate environment with the LnO6 octahedron. In these compounds, each PO3C tetrahedron is corner-shared with two LnO6 octahedra and each LnO6 octahedron is corner-shared with six PO3C tetrahedra, thus forming an inorganic layer in the crystallographic ab plane. The inorganic layers are further connected by a phenyl group, leading to a three-dimensional framework. Compound 1 exhibits the strong and characteristic emission of TbIII with an impressive quantum yield of 46.2%. Detailed magnetic analysis demonstrated that compound 2 displays a slow magnetic relaxation of magnetization with multiple relaxation mechanisms. The anisotropic energy barrier and the pre-exponential factor τ0 are 51.2 K and 3.9 × 10-7 s, respectively, in the presence of a direct-current field of 500 Oe. This work demonstrates a successful strategy to isolate octahedrally coordinated lanthanoid complexes through ionothermal synthesis to exhibit the single-ion-magnet-like behaviour and photoluminescence properties.A convenient and efficient approach to (E)-alkylsulfonyl olefins via a metal/light-free three-component reaction of alkenylboronic acids, sodium metabisulfite and Katritzky salts is described.
