All studies in the meta-analysis (n = 14) were conducted with children/teenagers with acute leukemia. Pooled gingivitis prevalence in patients before and during leukemia treatment was 85% (95%CI 75, 97%; 4 studies) and 82% (95%CI 71, 94%; 6 studies), respectively. Pooled DMFT means were 2.28 (95%CI 1.31, 3.25; 7 studies) and 3.65 (95%CI 1.45, 5.86; 5 studies) respectively for patients during and after leukemia treatment. Studies regarding periodontitis prevalence were too few to run a meta-analysis.
Based on cross-sectional data, young people with acute leukemia have high prevalence of gingivitis and caries experience. These findings indicate that the effect of leukemia on oral health still needs to be better investigated.

These findings indicate that the effect of leukemia on oral health still needs to be better investigated.The marine environment is particularly at risk from the intentional and unintentional introduction and spread of invasive alien species (IAS); preventing their introduction and spread from occurring is therefore, a key component in the on-going management of marine IAS. Ensuring legislation is coherent and consistent is essential to the success of managing the existing and future impacts of marine IAS. We explore the coherence (determined as consistency and interaction) of marine biosecurity legislation for IAS at different geopolitical scales. There was consistency between both the Bern Convention and Convention on Biological Diversity and European and national legislation that had been created in response. There was a lack of interaction evidenced by the Ballast Water Management Convention, which had not yet been transposed into regional (mainly European) or national legislation. Implementation measures such as legislation should be coherent as any failure in the chain could potentially weaken the overall effort to establish and maintain biosecurity and achieve behaviour change.In eutrophic coastal waters, harmful algal blooms (HAB) often occur and present challenges to environmental and fisheries management. Despite decades of research on HAB early warning systems, the field validation of algal bloom forecast models have received scant attention. We propose a daily algal bloom risk forecast system based on (i) a vertical stability theory verified against 191 past algal bloom events; and (ii) a data-driven artificial neural network (ANN) model that assimilates high frequency data to predict sea surface temperature (SST), vertical temperature and salinity differential with an accuracy of 0.35oC, 0.51oC, and 0.58 psu respectively. The model does not rely on past chlorophyll measurements and has been validated against extensive field data. Operational forecasts are illustrated for representative algal bloom events at a marine fish farm in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong. The robust model can assist with traditional onsite monitoring as well as artificial-intelligence (AI) based methods.
RNA splicing defects are emerging molecular hallmarks of cancer. #link# The gene encoding splicing factor RNA binding motif protein 10 (RBM10) has been found frequently mutated in various types of cancer, particularly lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), but how RBM10 affects cancer pathogenesis remains to be determined. Moreover, the functional roles and clinical significance of RBM10 mutation-associated splicing events in LUAD are largely unknown.
RBM10 mutations and their functional impacts were examined in LUAD patients from a Chinese patient cohort and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Alternative splicing (AS) changes induced by RBM10 mutations in LUAD were identified by RNA sequencing and correlated with patient survival. Functions of RBM10 and the splice variants of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4H containing or lacking exon 5 (EIF4H-L and EIF4H-S respectively) in LUAD development and progression were examined by cellular phenotypic assays and xenograft tumour formation.
RBM10 mutations in LUAD generally lead to loss-of-function and cause extensive alterations in splicing events that can serve as prognostic predictors. RBM10 suppresses LUADprogression largely by regulating alternative splicing of EIF4H exon 5. Loss of RBM10 in LUAD enhances the expression of EIF4H-L in LUAD. EIF4H-L, but not EIF4H-S, is critical for LUAD cell proliferation, survival and tumourigenesis.
Our study demonstrates a new molecular mechanism underlying RBM10 suppressive functions in lung cancer and the therapeutic value of RBM10-regulated AS events, providing important mechanistic and translational insights into splicing defects in cancer.

Italy was the first western country to experience a large Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak and the province of Bergamo experienced one of the deadliest COVID-19 outbreaks in the world. Following the peak of the epidemic in mid-March, the curve has slowly fallen thanks to the strict lockdown imposed by the Italian government on 9th March 2020.
We performed a cross-sectional study to assess the prevalence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in 423 workers in Bergamo province who returned to the workplace after the end of the Italian lockdown on 5th May 2020. To this end, we performed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the humoral response against SARS-CoV-2 and a nasopharyngeal swab to assess the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). As a secondary aim of the study, we validated a lateral flow immunochromatography assay (LFIA) for the detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.
Es a valuable tool for rapid serologic surveillance of COVID-19 for population studies.
