Mouse infection models are frequently used to study the host-pathogen interaction studies. However, due to several constraints, there is an urgent need for a simple, rapid, easy to handle, inexpensive, and ethically acceptable in vivo model system for studying the virulence of enteropathogens. Thus, the present study was performed to develop the larvae of Helicoverpa armigera as a rapid-inexpensive in vivo model system to evaluate the effect of Yersinia enterocolitica strain 8081 on its midgut via a label-free proteomic approach.
Helicoverpa armigera larvae fed with Yersinia enterocolitica strain 8081 manifested significant reduction in body weight and damage in midgut. On performing label-free proteomic study, secretory systems, putative hemolysin, and two-component system emerged as the main pathogenic proteins. Further, proteome comparison between control and Yersinia added diet-fed(YADF)insects revealed altered cytoskeletal proteins in response to increased melanization (via a prophenoloxidase cascade) and free radical generation. In concurrence, FTIR-spectroscopy, and histopathological and biochemical analysis confirmed gut damage in YADF insects. Finally, the proteome data suggests that the mechanism of infection and the host response in Y. enterocolitica-H. armigera system mimics Yersinia-mammalian gut interactions.
All data from current study collectively suggest that H. armigera larva can be considered as a potential in vivo model system for studying the enteropathogenic infection by Y. enterocolitica strain 8081.

This study aims to identify spatiotemporal characteristics of drought and drought disaster risk in the summer maize growth period under climate change condition. In this research, we use daily datasets from 79 meteorological stations and the maize yield data in the Huang-Huai-Hai (HHH) plain, eastern China during the period 1960-2015. The drought disaster risk index (DDRI) model was applied to assess the drought disaster risk. The maize drought disaster risk maps were drawn under current and future climate change conditions. The results showed that the high DDRI was distributed in northern region and low DDRI was distributed in most of southern region in the HHH plain. During the summer maize growth period, the DDRI decreased gradually from the northern to southern region. The results also exhibited that under the RCP4.5 (Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5) scenario, about one half of the HHH plain belonged to the slight and sub-slight DDRI region in the future 80 years. Overall, our results demonstrated that the DDRI model provided an accurate assessment in both spatial and temporal scales and had a theoretical guidance for improving the adaptation of crop production. Elevating maize drought risk management helps to lessen the anticipated risk to crop production in the HHH plain under the context of climate change.
The role of concomitant gastrostomy or jejunostomy feeding tube (FT) placement during pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) and its impact on patient outcomes remain controversial.
NSQIP database was surveyed for patients undergoing PD between 2014 and 2017. FT placement was identified using CPT codes. Propensity scores were used to match the two groups (11) on baseline characteristics and intraoperative variables including pancreas specific ones (duct size, gland texture, underlying disease, wound class, use of wound protector, drain placement, type of pancreatic reconstruction and vascular reconstruction). Outcomes were compared. Finally, a subset analyses for patients with delayed gastric emptying (DGE) or postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) were performed.
Out of 15,224 PD, 1,104 (7.5%) had FT. POPF and DGE rates were 17% and 18%, respectively, for the entire cohort. Selleckchem BTK inhibitor Feeding jejunostomy was the most placed FT (88.2%). Patients with FT placement were more likely to be older (mean, 65.8 vs. 64.6 y), smokers tend to have higher postoperative morbidity and delayed recovery.
Patients with FT placement during PD tend to have higher postoperative morbidity and delayed recovery. The amount of solid waste produced across the planet in the past decade was 1.3 billion tons (1.2 kg/year per person). Also, the significant number of publications on solid waste management (SWM) draws attention to the importance of discussing the topic to improve public health and to mitigate environmental impacts. The objectives of this article are to identify the state of the art and the scientific gaps on SWM and to propose a framework to promote it in the coming years. For this, a content analysis was carried out with the support of a bibliometric study, considering articles published in the Scopus database. The field of SWM study was classified into 12 different themes, and from this division, it was sought to identify the evolution of each of them between the 2005 and 2018 period. Content analysis and bibliometric study indicate that thermal and biological treatments are a promising trend to improve the performance of SWM. Its most important applied contribution is the generation of qualified information about SWM that can support the decision-making of public and private managers to reduce environmental impacts and improve life in urban spaces. The main academic contribution of the paper is the articulation of the most important themes on SWM, identifying the individual impact of each one of them in this field of study and the indication of the scientific trends that should guide the development of future research.A turn-on/off ratiometric fluorescence detection platform based on multifunctional lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) and an enzymatic cascade reaction is proposed for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay. L-phosphotyrosine is hydrolyzed to levodopa (L-dopa) by two steps of enzymatic reaction. L-dopa further reacts with naphthoresorcinol to produce carboxyazamonardine with strong emission at 490 nm. In this process, multifunctional Ln-MOF (Cu@Eu-BTC, BTC is the 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) acts not only as a nanozyme to catalyze the fluorogenic reaction between L-dopa and naphthoresorcinol but also as a fluorescence internal standard. The emission of Cu@Eu-BTC at 620 nm is quenched by phosphate anions, and the dual-response ratiometric fluorescence (F490/F620) can be achieved. A good linear relationship was obtained between Δ(F490/F620) and ALP activity in the range 0.3-24 U L-1 with the detection limit of 0.02 U L-1. In addition, a portable assay tube was designed for visual and point-of-care testing of ALP activity by color variation (ratiometric chromaticity).
