Organochlorine (OCPs) and organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) have been intensively applied in rice paddy field farming to control pest infestation and increase the yield. In this study, we investigated the presence of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in paddy rice and soil from rice plantations in Thailand and China. According to concentration and distribution of OCPs, the most abundant OCPs residues in rice and soil from Thailand and China were dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and hexachlorocyclohexanes. The OPPs of methidathion, carbophenothion, chlorpyrifos, and diazinon were common to Thailand and China in both types of samples. The detection frequency of multiple types of these pesticides was greater than 50% of total samples. The relative concentration of some OPPs residues in rice and soil from Thailand and China were significantly different from each other (p less then 0.0083), whereas, no significant difference was observed for the relative concentration of OCPs residues in rice and soil from both countries, except for HCHs (p less then 0.05). Bioaccumulation factors of OCPs between rice and soil samples indicated that OCPs and OPPs in soil could accumulate in rice. The carcinogenic and non- carcinogenic risks of OCPs and OPPs seem to be in the safe range as recommended by the European Union.In the present pictorial we show the ultrasonographic appearances of endometriosis in atypical sites. Scar endometriosis may present as a hypoechoic solid nodule with hyperechoic spots while umbilical endometriosis may appear as solid or partially cystic areas with ill-defined margins. In the case of endometriosis of the rectus muscle, ultrasonography usually demonstrates a heterogeneous hypoechogenic formation with indistinct edges. Inguinal endometriosis is quite variable in its ultrasonographic presentation showing a completely solid mass or a mixed solid and cystic mass. The typical ultrasonographic finding associated with perineal endometriosis is the presence of a solid lesion near to the episiotomy scar. Under ultrasonography, appendiceal endometriosis is characterized by a solid lesion in the wall of the small bowel, usually well defined. Superficial hepatic endometriosis is characterized by a small hypoechoic lesion interrupting the hepatic capsula, usually hyperechoic. Ultrasound endometriosis of the pancreas is characterized by a small hypoechoic lesion while endometriosis of the kidney is characterized by a hyperechoic small nodule. Diaphragmatic endometriosis showed typically small hypoechoic lesions. Only peripheral nerves can be investigated using ultrasound, with a typical solid appearance. In conclusion, ultrasonography seems to have a fundamental role in the majority of endometriosis cases in "atypical" sites, in all the cases where "typical" clinical findings are present.We report the development and characterizations of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor coated with different ultraviolet (UV) curable resins. The UV-curable resins were applied on the fiber after the FBG inscription and cured with an UV lamp. One set of samples used the NOA 68 resin and the other used NOA 88. The samples were characterized with respect to the temperature, moisture absorption and strain response. Furthermore, in order to understand the influence of the resin coating on the optical fiber's mechanical properties, tensile tests were performed with the samples. Results show that all samples presented negligible sensitivity to moisture absorption in the 50-min long tests with the fibers immersed in a container filled with distillated water. Regarding the temperature responses, the coated FBGs presented higher sensitivity (13.84 pm/°C for NOA 88 and 12.76 pm/°C for NOA 68) than the uncoated FBGs due to the thermal expansion of the coatings. In the strain tests, all coated and uncoated samples presented similar sensitivities, but with a larger strain range applied for the coated samples (strains higher than 5500 µε) when compared with the uncoated samples (3500 µε). Moreover, the stress-strain curves of the coated samples indicated a Young's modulus one order with magnitude lower than the one of the uncoated silica fiber, where the lowest Young's modulus is 3.84 GPa and was obtained with the NOA 68 coating, which indicates the possibility of obtaining highly sensitive pressure and force sensors.Hyperpolarization-activated calcium channels (HACCs) are found in the plasma membrane and tonoplast of many plant cell types, where they have an important role in Ca2+-dependent signalling. The unusual gating properties of HACCs in plants, i.e., activation by membrane hyperpolarization rather than depolarization, dictates that HACCs are normally open in the physiological hyperpolarized resting membrane potential state (the so-called pump or P-state); thus, if not regulated, they would continuously leak Ca2+ into cells. HACCs are permeable to Ca2+, Ba2+, and Mg2+; activated by H2O2 and the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA); and their activity in guard cells is greatly reduced by increasing amounts of free cytosolic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]Cyt), and hence closes during [Ca2+]Cyt surges. Here, we demonstrate that the presence of the commonly used Mg-ATP inside the guard cell greatly reduces HACC activity, especially at voltages ≤ -200 mV, and that Mg2+ causes this block. Therefore, we firstly conclude that physiological cytosolic Mg2+ levels affect HACC gating and that channel opening requires either high negative voltages (≥ -200 mV) or displacement of Mg2+ away from the immediate vicinity of the channel. Secondly, based on structural comparisons with a Mg2+-sensitive animal inward-rectifying K+ channel, we propose that the likely candidate HACCs described here are cyclic nucleotide gated channels (CNGCs), many of which also contain a conserved diacidic Mg2+ binding motif within their pores. On one hand, the study of the dynamic mechanical behavior of polypropylene/polyamide-6 blends modified by a novel compatibilizer was the objective. This was previously obtained by chemical modification of an atactic polypropylene polymerization waste. On the other hand, the accurate predictions of these properties in the experimental space scanned was the objective. As a novelty, this compatibilizer contains grafts rather than just maleated ones. Therefore, it consists precisely of an atactic polymer containing succinic anhydride (SA) bridges and both backbone and terminal grafted succinyl-fluorescein groups (SFSA) attached to the atactic backbone (aPP-SFSA). Therefore, it contains 6.2% of total grafting (2.5% as SA and 3.7% as SF), which is equivalent to 6.2·× 10-4 g·mol-1. This interfacial agent was uniquely designed and obtained by the authors themselves. Essentially, this article focuses on how the beneficial effect of both PA6 and aPP-SFSA varies the elastic (E') and the viscous (E) behavior of the iPP/aPP-SFSA/PA6 blend at the iPP glass transition.
