Both male-male and female-female bonds were stable over time. All flamingos were more frequently seen socialising than solitary; those in the largest flock showed the highest occurrence of social behaviour (irrespective of enclosure size differences). The number of connections realised from all available within a network was significantly influenced by season. Foot health did not predict associations in these three flamingo networks. Our results indicate that flamingo societies are complex (i.e. formed of long-standing preferential partnerships and not loose, random connections) and the impact of flock size and environment on sociality should be investigated further. These results are helpful for those working with captive flamingos to consider the number of birds housed so that an array of opportunities for choice of associate and/or breeding partner are available in zoo-housed flocks. Equine hepacivirus (EHV) belongs to the hepacivirus A and is related to hepatitis C virus (HCV). This virus shows hepatic tropism and is known to chronically infect horses. EHV has been reported from various countries, but the prevalence in Mongolia, where large horse populations are pastured, remains unknown. This study collected serum samples from horses in six areas across Mongolia, in order to investigate the status of infection. UC2288 The possibility of human infection was also examined. The results showed an infection rate among horses of about 40 % in all regions. However, no evidence of EHV viremia was found in human serum. A mutation characteristic of Mongolian EHV was found in the 5'-untranslated region of the viral sequence. Molecular phylogenetic trees for core, NS3, and NS5B sequences showed the formation of two clusters depending on the area from which samples were taken. The same results were obtained from molecular phylogenetic analyses using the full genome. From detailed calculations of genetic diversity calculated using the full genome, EHV appears divisible into two subgenotypes. Blood samples were collected again after a 7-month interval to examine infection persistence. Seventeen of 19 horses retested showed positive results for EHV after 7 months, suggesting a high rate of persistent infection. These results indicate a relatively higher frequency of EHV infection in Mongolia than in Europe or North America, with virus strains divided into at least two subgenotypes. AIMS Diabetes is a self-managed condition; knowledge, attitudes, and practices about the condition can influence the overall treatment outcomes and complications of the disease. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward diabetes among T2DM patients in the UAE, a highly prevalent country with diabetes. METHODS We used the revised Michigan Diabetes Knowledge Scale on T2DM patients. The awareness on diabetes was then assessed based on socio-demographic characteristics, illness perceptions, medication adherence, diabetic self-care, and T2DM complications. RESULTS Overall assessment of T2DM patients on their knowledge, and attitude toward their diabetes were good in the majority of participants (544, 76%; 570, 76% respectively). However, adherence to diabetic self-care practices was fair in the mainstream (437, 57%). The compliance to medication (527, 70%) and eye care practice (475, 63%), were quite high; yet regular checking blood sugar at home 330 (44%) and the foot care practice 336 (45%) were not satisfying. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that the intensive education service being given and time the physician spends with the T2DM patients is highly associated with better practice and outcome of the disease. There is a need for the establishment of better DM education programs in PHC clinics and the development of more campaigns and enlightening programs, both for health care providers and public on T2DM self-care, complications, and nature of the disease. We suggest that new policies be established with a focus on increasing community awareness of diabetes and preventive measures in UAE. AIMS We aimed to investigate the effect of different dietary approaches on systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) in Type II diabetes (T2D). METHODS A systematic search was performed in Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane library without any language and time restriction up to December 2018, to retrieve the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which examined the effects of different dietary approaches on SBP and DBP in T2D patients. Meta-analyses were carried out using a random effects model. I2 index was used to evaluate the heterogeneity. RESULTS Twenty four RCTs with 1130 patients were eligible. The dietary modifications were more effective in reducing both SBP and DBP vs. control diet. The Low-sodium, High-fiber, DASH, Low-fat, Low-protein and Vegan dietary approach were significantly more effective in reducing SBP compared to a control diet. The High-fiber, Low-fat, Low-protein and Vegan diet were significantly more effective in reducing DBP. The Low-sodium and High fiber diets had the greatest lowering effect on SBP and DBP in T2D patients. CONCLUSIONS Adopting healthful dietary modifications were more effective in reducing both SBP and DBP vs. control. The High-fiber and Low-sodium diets had the greatest lowering effect on SBP and DBP in T2D. AIMS To evaluate the changes in cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who were candidates for kidney-pancreas transplantation (KPTx) from 1999 to 2017. METHODS Patients with T1D referred for KPTx evaluation were included. The cohort was divided into five groups according to the year of evaluation (1999-2002, 2003-2006, 2007-2010, 2011-2014 and 2015-2017). The control of CVRFs and the prevalence of prior CVD were evaluated. RESULTS We evaluated 360 patients (64.4% men, age 38.9 ± 7.1 years). LDL-cholesterol less then 100 mg/dl increased from 22.7% to 76.9% (1999-2002 vs. 2015-2017; p less then 0.001), as did the use of statins (from 24.7% to 74.5%; p less then 0.001). Systolic blood pressure decreased from 138.8 ± 27.6 to 125.1 ± 27.9 mmHg (p = 0.001) and current smokers from 48% to 25% (p = 0.018). Intensive insulin treatment increased from 34.4% to 93.6% (p less then 0.001). Diabetes duration before the initiation of renal replacement therapy increased from 23 ± 5.
