This study examined how adolescents think about the HPV vaccine to identify patterns and misconceptions to enhance educational efforts. Adolescents (ages 11-12) (N = 168) responded to open-ended questions regarding their thinking about the HPV vaccine. Data were analyzed and interpreted using qualitative thematic analysis. Three domains of themes emerged from responses (1) characteristics of HPV vaccination, (2) knowledge-related themes, and (3) beliefs-related themes. Prevention of HPV and cancer was the most referenced characteristic of HPV vaccination followed by HPV vaccine rates and HPV vaccine efficacy. Student inquiries were mostly centered on HPV vaccine composition, administration, duration and how the vaccine interacts with the body. Some responses indicated a desire for more information about HPV not specific to the HPV vaccine. Overall, adolescent attitudes were positive towards the HPV vaccine. This study highlights specific questions adolescents have about the vaccine that can be used to tailor future HPV educational efforts, empowering adolescents with the knowledge to be more active students in the decision-making process. The globally invasive sweet potato whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera Aleyrodidae) is considered a weak flier whose life history nonetheless predisposes it to frequent dispersal, but the scale over which populations exchange migrants, and should therefore be managed, is uncertain. In this review, we synthesize the emergent literature on B. tabaci population genetics to address the question What spatial scales define B. tabaci populations? We find that within-species genetic differentiation among sites is often low, and evidence of population structuring by host plant or geography is rare. Heterozygote deficits prevail among populations, indicating that migrants from divergent populations are frequently sampled together. Overall, these results suggest that there is high ongoing gene flow over large spatial extents. However, genetic homogeneity typical of recently invading populations could obscure power to detect real isolation among populations. Genome-wide data collected systematically across space and time could distinguish signatures of invasion history from those of ongoing gene flow. Characterizing the spatial extent of B. tabaci populations could reveal whether insecticide rotations can be tailored to specific commodities or if coordination across linked commodities and regions is justified.

Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) is a technology that allows the re-evaluation of questionable donor lung before implantation and it has the potential to repair injured donor lungs that are otherwise unsuitable for transplantation. We hypothesized that perfluorocarbon-based oxygen carrier, a novel reconditioning strategy instilled during EVLP would improve graft function.

We utilized perfluorocarbon-based oxygen carrier (PFCOC) during EVLP to recondition and improve lung graft function in a pig model of EVLP and lung transplantation. Lungs were retrieved and stored for 24 h at 4 °C. EVLP was done for 6 h with or without PFCOC. In the transplantation groups, left lung transplantation was done after EVLP with or without PFCOC. Allograft function was assessed by means of pulmonary gas exchange, lung mechanics and vascular pressures, histology and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
