Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), a member of the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily, are abundant in human ocular tissues and play an important role in lens development. Targeted deletion of BMP-4 in mice results in failure of lens placode formation. Following lens maturation, the formation of senile cataracts is demonstrably associated with free radical-related oxidative stress. Previous studies reported that BMPs play an antiapoptotic role in cells under oxidative stress, and the BMP-4 signal is important in inflammation regulation and homeostasis. BMP-4 evidently suppressed the apoptosis of human lens epithelial cells (HLECS) under oxidative stress induced by H2O2. This protective antiapoptotic effect is partly due to a decrease in caspase-3 activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. Furthermore, the expression of activating transcription factor- (ATF-) 6 and Krüppel-like factor- (KLF-) 6 increased under oxidative stress and decreased after BMP-4 treatment. This study is aimed at investigating the effects of bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) on the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) into neuron-like cells in vitro. The rat BMSCs were isolated and identified, which were divided into the control, empty, recombinant rhBMP-7 transfection, and Lv-BMP-7 transfection groups. BMSCs were induced under different conditions. CCK-8 assay was performed to detect cell proliferation. ALP was used to detect cell activity. Cellular morphology after induction was observed. Immunofluorescence was conducted to detect the expression and location of nerve cell markers. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot analysis were performed to detect the mRNA and protein expression levels, respectively. The rhBMP-7 and Lv-BMP-7 promoted the proliferation of BMSCs, accompanied with increased ALP activities. Morphological observations revealed that rhBMP-7 and Lv-BMP-7 induced BMSCs to differentiate into neuron-like cells. Immunofluorescence revealed that the rhBMP-7 and Lv-BMP-7 groups showed positive expression of MAP-2 and Nfh in BMSCs. MAP-2 was mainly distributed in the cell body and cellular protrusion, while Nfh was mainly distributed in the cytoplasm and cell protrusion. Positive mRNA and protein expressions of MAP-2 and Nfh were observed in the cells of the rhBMP-7 and Lv-BMP-7 groups, and the expression levels were significantly higher than the control and empty groups. Both exogenous BMP-7 (rhBMP-7) and endogenous BMP-7 (Lv-BMP-7) can induce BMSCs to differentiate into neuron-like cells highly expressing the neuronal markers MAP-2 and Nfh.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1155/2018/3143412.].

To investigate the association between poststroke depression (PSD) and psychological crisis in patients who have experienced a stroke within 6 months.

This was a retrospective cross-sectional study that enrolled patients within 6 months after stroke onset. The investigators reviewed medical charts to obtain patients' baseline characteristics, and a psychologist evaluated each patient for depression using the Taiwanese Depression Questionnaire (TDQ) and for psychological crisis using the Triage Assessment System (TAS). A generalized linear model (GLM) was used to analyze the association between the results of the TDQ and TAS.

Ninety-seven patients with stroke were included. Age (

= 0.003), time since onset of stroke (

= 0.041), diabetes mellitus (

= 0.004), hypertension (

= 0.016), heart disease (

= 0.005), and TDQ score were significantly different between the hemorrhagic stroke group and the ischemic stroke group. The TDQ score was significantly lower in the hemorrhagic stroke group (

= 0.012). The TDQ score was associated with the TAS total score and each domain score, and the presence of heart disease was associated with poorer TAS score in the behavioral domain (

= 0.016).

PSD is likely an important component of psychological crisis in stroke patients. For clinicians, a comprehensive psychologic evaluation is necessary to optimize treatment.

Thirty-five patients who underwent a modified Broström procedure for CAI were recruited in this prospective randomized controlled trial. Fifty-minute sessions of hospital-based rehabilitation were performed three times weekly for 12 weeks in the intervention group. Education-based rehabilitation was conducted at home in the control group. Pseudochelerythrine The outcomes were evaluated at baseline (T0), 12 weeks (T1), and 16 weeks (T2). The primary outcome was the foot and ankle outcome score (FAOS). Ankle motor strength and spatiotemporal gait metrics were assessed as secondary outcomes. There were significant time and group interaction effects on the pain, symptoms, activities of daily living, sports activities, and quality of life (QOL) domains of the FAOS (P less then 0.05, all). The patients in the intervention group showed larger improvements in all domains of the FAOS than did the control group at both T1 and T2 (P less then 0.05, all). The time and group interaction effects on invertor and evertor strength were also significant (P = 0.047 and P = 0.044). Invertor and evertor strength improved significantly more in the intervention group than in the control group at T1 and T2 (P less then 0.05, all). The preferred walking velocity, cadence, step length on the affected side, and double stance phase duration tended to improve over time. Postoperative hospital-based rehabilitation helped improve CAI pain, symptoms, independence in activities of daily living, sports activity levels, and QOL more effectively than did conventional rehabilitation at home.

The regeneration of dental pulp, especially in cases of pulp death of immature teeth, is the goal of the regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) that are based on tissue engineering principles, consisting of stem cells, growth factors, and scaffolds. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) showed to improve dental pulp regeneration through cell homing approaches in preclinical studies and has been proposed as the fourth element of tissue engineering. However, when a blood clot was used as a scaffold in one of these previous studies, only 30% of success was achieved. The authors pointed

the instability of the blood clot as the regeneration shortcoming. Then, to circumvent this problem, a new scaffold was developed to be applied with the blood clot. The hypothesis of the present study was that an experimental injectable chitosan hydrogel would facilitate the three-dimensional spatial organization of endogenous stem cells in dental pulp regeneration with no interference on the positive influence of PBMT.

For the

analysis, stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs) were characterized by flow cytometry and applied in the chitosan scaffold for evaluating adhesion, migration, and proliferation.
