Basalt fiber (BF) is a new anti-corrosion and environmentally friendly material, which is expected to delay the corrosion process of steel bars and improve the durability of reinforced reactive powder concrete (RPC). The electrochemical method is a nondestructive testing and real-time monitoring technique used to characterize the corrosion behaviors of steel bars embedded in concrete structures. In this paper, the electrochemical technique was employed to evaluate the corrosion of steel bars embedded in basalt fiber modified reactive powder concrete (BFRPC). Besides, crack and steel-concrete interface damage (SCID) were considered as typical factors that affect steel corrosion in concrete. Thus, both reinforced fiber-free RPC and BFRPC specimens with crack and SCID were prepared for evaluating the steel corrosion behaviors by electrochemical methods. The results revealed that both crack and SCID would aggravate the steel corrosion, and the crack was the major factor that affects the corrosion process. Moreover, the excellent compactness of BFRPC and the bridging action of BF could effectively prevent the concrete cracking and steel corrosion process of concrete. Selleck BAL-0028 Using reinforced BFRPC instead of ordinary concrete in practical projects could greatly extend the service life of steel bars.Educational hospitalization of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may slow the progression of renal dysfunction. However, the educational aspect that is more effective has not been identified to date. In this study, patients with CKD were evaluated for gustatory threshold for salty taste and received augmented salt reduction guidance under educational hospitalization at Nagasaki University Hospital from October 2016. In total, 277 eligible patients were enrolled and hospitalized from 2012 to 2019 (mean age of 69.2 years; men comprised 62.1%). We compared 141 patients (Group A) who were educated in the hospital after October 2016 and 136 patients (Group B) who received standard education in the hospital before October 2016. The changes in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (ΔeGFR) after hospitalization and dialysis induction rate within one year after hospitalization were evaluated. The ΔeGFR was significantly improved in Group A compared to Group B (A 1.05 mL/min/1.73 m2/month, B 0.55 mL/min/1.73 m2/month; p = 0.02). The dialysis induction rate was significantly lower in Group A than in Group B (A 8.5%, B 15.5%; p = 0.001). These trends were also observed by multivariate analyses. In conclusion, educational hospitalization with enhanced salt reduction guidance may reduce the risk of end-stage renal disease. The separation of gallium from iron by solvent extraction from chloride media is challenging because the anionic chloridometalates, FeCl4- and GaCl4-, display similar chemical properties. However, we report here that the selective separation of gallium from iron in HCl solution can be achieved using the dual-purpose ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium iodide in a solvent extraction process. In this case, the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by the iodide counterion was found to inhibit Fe transport, facilitating quantitative Ga extraction by the ionic liquid with minimal Fe extraction from 2 M HCl.Protein is the most satiating macronutrient, increasing secretion of gastrointestinal hormones and diet induced thermogenesis. In phenylketonuria (PKU), natural protein is restricted with approximately 80% of intake supplied by a synthetic protein source, which may alter satiety response. Casein glycomacropeptide (CGMP-AA), a carbohydrate containing peptide and alternative protein substitute to amino acids (AA), may enhance satiety mediated by its bioactive properties.

In a three-year longitudinal; prospective study, the effect of AA and two different amounts of CGMP-AA (CGMP-AA only (CGMP100) and a combination of CGMP-AA and AA (CGMP50) on satiety, weight and body mass index (BMI) were compared.

48 children with PKU completed the study. Median ages of children were CGMP100; (

= 13), 9.2 years; CGMP50; (

= 16), 7.3 years; and AA (

= 19), 11.1 years. Semi-quantitative dietary assessments and anthropometry (weight, height and BMI) were measured every three months.

The macronutrient contribution to total energy intake from protein, carbohydrate and fat was similar across the groups. Adjusting for age and gender, no differences in energy intake, weight, BMI, incidence of overweight or obesity was apparent between the groups.

In this three-year longitudinal study, there was no indication to support a relationship between CGMP and satiety, as evidenced by decreased energy intake, thereby preventing overweight or obesity. Satiety is a complex multi-system process that is not fully understood.

It has been reported that artemisinin derivatives can overcome resistance to tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-induced apoptosis in liver and cervical cancer cells. In our study, we demonstrated that artesunate (ATS) and dihydroartemisinin (DHA) are more efficient in killing colon cancer cells compared to artemisinin (ART). ATS/DHA induces the expression of DR5 in a P53 dependent manner in HCT116 and DLD-1 cells. Both ATS and DHA overcome the resistance to DHER-induced apoptosis in HCT116, mainly through upregulating death receptor 5 (DR5). We also demonstrate that DHA sensitizes HCT116 cells to DHER-induced apoptosis via P53 regulated DR5 expression in P53 knockdown assays. Nevertheless, a lower effect was observed in DLD-1 cells, which has a single Ser241Phe mutation in the P53 DNA binding domain. Thus, the status of P53 could be one of the determinants of TRAIL resistance in some cancer cells. Finally, the combination treatment of DHA and the TRAIL variant DHER increases cell death in 3D colon cancer spheroid models, which shows its potential as a novel therapy.
