What is a Volvo Truck Key?

Key for ignition

The ignition key is the mechanical component that turns the car on. The ignition key also opens the trunk and doors. Certain keys can be used for additional purposes like a panic button trunk release, liftgate release or tailgate release.

Certain Volvo keys are marked with special features, such as red or restricted keys. These are controlled by how the car was shipped from the factory. Key fobs that are red or orange in color. The shells of these keys can be removed prior to they can be used on a different vehicle. Keys can be programmed by a dealer or your own. Volvo key fobs do not require "virginizing".

Remote Key

The remote key allows you to open the doors and begin the car. It also lets you control the locks and activate/deactivate some functions, like panorama roofs or power windows. The key has a limited function that disables motion sensing*. You can order keys with this feature from the dealer (you need proof of ownership) or a Volvo-certified locksmith. The key that has this feature is marked orange or red. The color of the key shell release slider is the same as the color of the blade. The swapping of a new key with an old one will not alter the function.

Programming (adding) an additional remote is simple, just follow VIDA's instructions. It does not have to be an "virgin key". Sit in the driver's seat with the doors shut. Press the lock button on the new remote. The side marker light will flash, signalling that the key can be programmed.

Keyless Entry Key

A single press of the keyless entry button locks the car and activates the alarm, a long press shuts all windows and panoramic roof*. The key is equipped with a tiny button battery. The dealer can cut you a new keyless entry key, or a locksmith who is registered with Volvo can as well. They can also program your Volvo keys. You can change the shells of the key fob and it will work interchangeably.

Key Fob

A key fob is part of the VOLVO key and contains the keyless entry as well as lock and unlock functions. It also has an emergency key that can activate the alarm for your vehicle. The key fob comes with an option to close your windows, or open the panoramic roof*. The key fob comes in a plastic shell with silver buttons that match the color of your car. You can swap this shell between keys, and the function will not change.

A dealer can cut you the replacement blade you need for your key fob. A locksmith who is registered with Volvo can also do so, but they may need to see proof of ownership before they can make the cut. You can also make use of a blank keys to copy the emergency blade. You will just need to get the key programmed by VIDA for it to work in your vehicle.
