In conclusion, sequential measurements of serum 25-OH-VitD might prove useful for future studies evaluating the dynamic changes in vitamin D3 status in regard to asthma, especially in symptomatic patients.Noble metal nitrides (NMNs) have important theoretical significance and potential application prospects due to their high bulk modulus and remarkable electrical properties. However, NMNs can only be synthesized under extreme conditions of ultrahigh pressure and temperature, and nanoscaled NMNs have not been reported. In this work, as typical NMNs, PtNx nanoparticles were synthesized at 5 GPa and 750 K by the method of plasma-assisted laser-heating diamond anvil cell. The significantly reduced synthesis condition benefited from the ingenious design of the precursor and the remarkable chemical activity of the ultrafine Pt nanoparticles. This study, combining nanomaterials with high-pressure and -temperature (HPHT) techniques, provides a novel process for the preparation of NMN nanomaterials, and a new direction for the synthesis of superhard materials.Eight kinds of chiral diacid monomers were prepared with amino acids with different side groups or configurations. Polyester-imides (PEIs) were synthesized from these diacid monomers and diphenol monomers through polycondensation reaction, and the performances and properties were compared with the chiral polyamide-imides (PAIs) previously synthesized by our work group. Their thermal properties were analyzed by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic thermomechanical analysis (DMA), and it was found that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PEI was mainly affected by the volume of side groups. Their degradability was studied through buffer degradation experiments, and the changes in their water contact angle, molecular weight, structure and appearance during the degradation process were characterized by contact angle tester, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). With degradation, the hydrophilicity of PEI was improved, and when amino acids with larger side groups or D configuration were introduced into the backbone of PEI, the degradability decreased.
While swallowing disorders are frequent sequela following posterior fossa tumor (PFT) surgery in children, data on dysphagia frequency, severity, and outcome in adults are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate dysphagia before and after surgical removal of PFT. Additionally, we tried to identify clinical predictors for postsurgical swallowing disorders. Furthermore, this study explored the three-month outcome of dysphagic patients.
In a cohort of patients undergoing PFT surgery, dysphagia was prospectively assessed pre- and postoperatively using fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. Patients with severe dysphagia at discharge were re-evaluated after three months. Additionally, clinical and imaging data were collected to identify predictors for post-surgical dysphagia.
We included 26 patients of whom 15 had pre-operative swallowing disorders. After surgery, worsening of pre-existing dysphagia could be noticed in 7 patients whereas improvement was observed in 2 and full recovery in 3ent and full recovery. Overall, our findings show the need of early dysphagia assessment to define the safest feeding route for the patient. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the SH2B3, MTHFD1L, GGCX, and ITGB3 gene variants on the efficacy of warfarin treatment and its effects on the risk of cardiovascular disorders in Jordanian patients. The selected genes and their polymorphisms are involved in many Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) associated with cardiovascular disease and the variability of warfarin therapy. The current study conducted a genetic association and pharmacogenetics study in (212) Jordanian cardiovascular patients treated with warfarin and (213) healthy controls. DNA extraction and the Mass ARRAY™ system were used to genotype ten selected polymorphisms within four genes (SH2B3, MTHFD1L, GGCX, and ITGB3). This study confirmed a genetic association of MTHFD1L rs6922269 Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) with warfarin sensitivity during the initial and stabilization phases of treatment. Moreover, this SNP showed significant differences in the initial and maintenance doses of warfarin. This study also found an association between the genetic haplotypes (AGC and GAT) within the SH2B3 gene and responsiveness to warfarin. However, possession of an MTHFD1L rs491552 variant allele was found to affect the outcome measure of the international normalized ratio (INR) during the stabilization phase of warfarin treatment. In contrast, there was no association between all selected SNPs and susceptibility to cardiovascular disorders. This study extends the current understanding of the high variability of the warfarin response, including variability in dose requirements and susceptibility to cardiovascular disease in the Jordanian-Arab population. selleck chemicals Other studies on a larger sample and in different ethnic groups could help to better understand the pharmacogenetics of warfarin and its application in personalized medicine.A voltage transformer employing the magnetoelectric effect in a composite ceramic heterostructure with layers of a magnetostrictive nickel-cobalt ferrite and a piezoelectric lead zirconate-titanate is described. In contrast to electromagnetic and piezoelectric transformers, a unique feature of the presented transformer is the possibility of tuning the voltage transformation ratio K using a dc magnetic field. The dependences of the transformer characteristics on the frequency and the amplitude of the input voltage, the strength of the control magnetic field and the load resistance are investigated. The transformer operates in the voltage range between 0 and 112 V, and the voltage transformation ratio K is tuned between 0 and 14.1 when the control field H changes between 0 and 6.4 kA/m. The power at the transformer output reached 63 mW, and the power conversion efficiency was 34%. The methods for calculation of the frequency response, and the field and load characteristics of the transformer are proposed. The ways to improve performance characteristics of magnetoelectric transformers and their possible application areas are discussed.
