Lavender flowers were used in this study as a source of phytochemicals as naturally occurring antioxidants. QNZ in vitro were applied, such as ultrasound-assisted (UAE) and supercritical fluids (SCE) methods. The comparative evaluation of the phytochemicals profile evidenced a higher content of chlorophyll a and b of 5.22 ± 0.12 mg/g dry weight (D.W.) and 2.95 ± 0.16 mg/g D.W, whereas the carotenoids content was 18.24 ± 0.04 mg/g D.W. in the SCE extract. Seven main compounds were found in both extracts β-linalool, eucalyptol, linalool acetate, β-trans-ocimene, and limonene in SCE and linalool acetate, β-linalool, 6-methyl-2-(2-oxiranyl)-5-hepten-2-ol, linalool oxide, lavandulyl acetate and camphor in UAE. The (n-3) acids had a higher contribution in SCE. The extracts were microencapsulated in different combinations of wall materials based on polysaccharides and milk proteins. The four variants showed different phytochemical and morphological profiles, with a better encapsulating efficiency for proteins (up to 98%), but with a higher content of encapsulated carotenoids for polysaccharides, the latter showing remarkable antimicrobial activity against selected microorganisms. Carboxymethyl cellulose and whey proteins led to a double encapsulation of lipophilic compounds. The powders were tested in two food matrices as ingredients, with multiple targeted functions, such as flavoring, antimicrobial, antioxidant activity that can successfully replace synthetic additives.Tomato paste production generates a residue known as tomato pomace, which corresponds to peels and seeds separated during tomato processing. Currently, there is an opportunity to use tomato pomace to obtain a functional extract with antithrombotic properties, such as platelet anti-aggregant activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the yield and inhibitory activity of different extracts of tomato pomace on in vitro platelet aggregation, comparing this activity with commercial cardioprotective products, and quantify bioactive compounds. Aqueous or ethanolic/water (11) extracts of whole tomato pomace, seedless tomato pomace, tomato pomace supplemented with seeds (50% and 20%), and only seeds were obtained with different ultrasound-assisted extraction times. The inhibition of platelet aggregation was evaluated using a lumi-aggregometer. The quantification of bioactive compounds was determined by HPLC-MS. From 5 g of each type of tomato pomace sample, 0.023-0.22 g of a dry extract was obtained for the platelet aggregation assay. The time of sonication and extraction solvent had a significant role in platelet anti-aggregant activity of some extracts respect the control. Thus, the most active extracts decreased adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-induced platelet aggregation from 87 ± 6% (control) to values between 26 ± 6% and 34 ± 2% (p less then 0.05). Furthermore, different ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions of tomato pomace fractions had varied concentration of flavonoids and nucleosides, and had an effect on extract yield.Among Latin American women, breast cancer incidences vary across populations. Uruguay and Argentina have the highest rates in South America, which are mainly attributed to strong, genetic European contributions. Most genetic variants associated with breast cancer were described in European populations. However, the vast majority of genetic contributors to breast cancer risk remain unknown. Here, we report the results of a candidate gene association study of sporadic breast cancer in 176 cases and 183 controls in the Uruguayan population. We analyzed 141 variants from 98 loci that have been associated with overall breast cancer risk in European populations. We found weak evidence for the association of risk variants rs294174 (ESR1), rs16886165 (MAP3K1), rs2214681 (CNTNAP2), rs4237855 (VDR), rs9594579 (RANKL), rs8183919 (PTGIS), rs2981582 (FGFR2), and rs1799950 (BRCA1) with sporadic breast cancer. These results provide useful insight into the genetic susceptibility to sporadic breast cancer in the Uruguayan population and support the use of genetic risk scores for individualized screening and prevention.Since the widespread of severe acute respiratory syndrome of coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease, the utilization of face masks has become omnipresent all over the world. Face masks are believed to contribute to an adequate protection against respiratory infections spread through micro-droplets among the infected person to non-infected others. However, due to the very high demands of face masks, especially the N95-type mask typically worn by medical workers, the public faces a shortage of face masks. Many papers have been published recently that focus on developing new and facile techniques to reuse and reinforce commercially available face masks. For instance, the N95 mask uses a polymer-based (membrane) filter inside, and the filter membrane can be replaced if needed. Another polymer sputtering technique by using a simple cotton candy machine could provide a cheap and robust solution for face mask fabrication. This review discuss the novel approaches of face mask reuse and reinforcement specifically by using membrane-based technology. Tuning the polymeric properties of face masks to enhance filterability and virus inactivity is crucial for future investigation. The presence of fever has long been a warning sign of severe urinary tract infection (UTI). However, we previously identified that inpatients with afebrile UTI had an increased risk of developing acute kidney injury (AKI). #link# After expanding this cohort, 1132 inpatients with UTI diagnosed between January 2006 and April 2019 were analyzed. Overall, 159 (14%) of these patients developed AKI; bacteremia, urolithiasis, septic shock, hypertension, lower baseline renal function, marked leukocytosis, and the absence of fever were independently linked to AKI. When we further studied the cohort of inpatients with fever during hospitalization, we identified a group of "delayed fever" UTI inpatients who did not have fever as their initial presentation. Compared to patients presenting with fever at the emergency department, patients with delayed fever tended to be younger and have less frequent infection with Escherichia coli, more frequent AKI, upper tract infection, and a longer hospital stay. Despite the initial absence of fever, these patients demonstrated larger extents of elevations in both serum white blood cell counts and C-reactive protein levels.
