Recent technological and computational advances have enabled the collection of data at an unprecedented rate. On the one hand, the large amount of data suddenly available has opened up new opportunities for new data-driven research but, on the other hand, it has brought into light new obstacles and challenges related to storage and analysis limits. Here, we strengthen an upscaling approach borrowed from theoretical ecology that allows us to infer with small errors relevant patterns of a dataset in its entirety, although only a limited fraction of it has been analysed. In particular we show that, after reducing the input amount of information on the system under study, by applying our framework it is still possible to recover two statistical patterns of interest of the entire dataset. Tested against big ecological, human activity and genomics data, our framework was successful in the reconstruction of global statistics related to both the number of types and their abundances while starting from limited presence/absence information on small random samples of the datasets. These results pave the way for future applications of our procedure in different life science contexts, from social activities to natural ecosystems.Quantum key distribution (QKD) networks hold promise for sharing secure randomness over multi-partities. Most existing QKD network schemes and demonstrations are based on trusted relays or limited to point-to-point scenario. Here, we propose a flexible and extensible scheme named as open-destination measurement-device-independent QKD network. The scheme enjoys security against untrusted relays and all detector side-channel attacks. Particularly, any users can accomplish key distribution under assistance of others in the network. As an illustration, we show in detail a four-user network where two users establish secure communication and present realistic simulations by taking into account imperfections of both sources and detectors. This study conducted an exergy analysis of advanced adsorption cooling cycles. The possible exergy losses were divided into internal losses and external losses, and the exergy losses of each process in three advanced cycles a mass recovery cycle, heat recovery cycle and combined heat and mass recovery cycle were calculated. A transient two-dimensional numerical model was used to solve the heat and mass transfer kinetics. The exergy destruction of each component and process in a finned tube type, silica gel/water working paired-adsorption chiller was estimated. The results showed that external loss was significantly reduced at the expense of internal loss. The mass recovery cycle reduced the total loss to 60.95 kJ/kg, which is -2.76% lower than the basic cycle. In the heat recovery cycle, exergy efficiency was significantly enhanced to 23.20%. The optimum value was 0.1248 at a heat recovery time of 60 s. The combined heat and mass recovery cycle resulted in an 11.30% enhancement in exergy efficiency, compared to the heat recovery cycle. The enhancement was much clearer when compared to the basic cycle, with 37.12%. The observed dependency on heat recovery time and heating temperature was similar to that observed for individual mass recovery and heat recovery cycles.Intuitively, one way to make classifiers more robust to their input is to have them depend less sensitively on their input. The Information Bottleneck (IB) tries to learn compressed representations of input that are still predictive. Scaling up IB approaches to large scale image classification tasks has proved difficult. We demonstrate that the Conditional Entropy Bottleneck (CEB) can not only scale up to large scale image classification tasks, but can additionally improve model robustness. CEB is an easy strategy to implement and works in tandem with data augmentation procedures. We report results of a large scale adversarial robustness study on CIFAR-10, as well as the ImageNet-C Common Corruptions Benchmark, ImageNet-A, and PGD attacks.Conventional image entropy merely involves the overall pixel intensity statistics which cannot respond to intensity patterns over spatial domain. However, spatial distribution of pixel intensity is definitely crucial to any biological or computer vision system, and that is why gestalt grouping rules involve using features of both aspects. Recently, the increasing integration of knowledge from gestalt research into visualization-related techniques has fundamentally altered both fields, offering not only new research questions, but also new ways of solving existing issues. This paper presents a Bayesian edge detector called GestEdge, which is effective in detecting gestalt edges, especially useful for forming object boundaries as perceived by human eyes. GestEdge is characterized by employing a directivity-aware sampling window or mask that iteratively deforms to probe or explore the existence of principal direction of sampling pixels; when convergence is reached, the window covers pixels best representing the directivity in compliance with the similarity and proximity laws in gestalt theory. During the iterative process based on the unsupervised Expectation-Minimization (EM) algorithm, the shape of the sampling window is optimally adjusted. Such a deformable window allows us to exploit the similarity and proximity among the sampled pixels. Comparisons between GestEdge and other edge detectors are shown to justify the effectiveness of GestEdge in extracting the gestalt edges.Based on the application of the conditional mean rule, a sampling-recovery algorithm is studied for a Gaussian two-dimensional process. The components of such a process are the input and output processes of an arbitrary linear system, which are characterized by their statistical relationships. Realizations are sampled in both processes, and the number and location of samples in the general case are arbitrary for each component. As a result, general expressions are found that determine the optimal structure of the recovery devices, as well as evaluate the quality of recovery of each component of the two-dimensional process. The main feature of the obtained algorithm is that the realizations of both components or one of them is recovered based on two sets of samples related to the input and output processes. CDK4/6-IN-6 nmr This means that the recovery involves not only its own samples of the restored realization, but also the samples of the realization of another component, statistically related to the first one. This type of general algorithm is characterized by a significantly improved recovery quality, as evidenced by the results of six non-trivial examples with different versions of the algorithms.
