2% ambroxol hydrochloride was more effective in augmenting tear secretion than Diquas. With 24 h of treatment, 5 μM of ambroxol hydrochloride upregulated AQP5 and MU5AC mRNA and MUC5AC protein in a goblet cell line. When tested on preserved human conjunctiva tissue, a trend of increased production of MUC5AC protein was seen (P = 0.26).

Ambroxol is effective in augmenting tear secretion at the ocular surface in rabbits. With actions desirable of a candidate dry eye drug, further investigation of ambroxol and related compounds is warranted to explore their value toward clinical application.

To investigate morphological and functional outcomes of the inverted internal limiting membrane (I-ILM) flap technique in large (≥ 400μm) idiopathic full-thickness macular holes (FTMH) over a follow-up period of 12months.

In this retrospective study, 55 eyes of 54 consecutive patients were enrolled. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT, Heidelberg, Spectralis) were performed preoperatively as well as 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12months postoperatively. Special focus was put on the reintegration of outer retinal layers and the different ILM flap appearances.

FTMH closure rate was 100% (55/55). BCVA significantly improved over the follow-up period of 12months from 0.98 ± 0.38 LogMAR preoperatively to 0.42 ± 0.33 LogMAR at 12months postoperatively (p < 0.001). There was no significant correlation between the three different ILM flap appearances and BCVA. Better preoperative BCVA, complete restoration of the external limiting membrane (ELM), higher macular hole index (MHI), and smaller MH base diameter were associated with higher improvement of BCVA.

Our study highlights the favorable morphological and functional outcomes of the I-ILM flap technique in the short as well as in the long term. While complete ELM restoration revealed to be an important factor for improvement in BCVA, the different postoperative ILM flap appearances seem not to be related to BCVA.

To determine the visual outcomes achieved in terms of efficacy and safety during high-volume cataract surgery programs in different locations in Kenya.

Eight hundred eighty-one eyes of 849 patients underwent extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation in a retrospective, observational, consecutive cohort study on patients who underwent cataract surgery in five programs that a Spanish non-governmental organization conducted between 2013 and 2019 for the prevention of blindness in different geographical areas of Kenya Thika, Athi River, Kissi, Bagavathi, and Nakuru. The programs were carried out by Spanish and Kenyan surgeons working together.

Mean age was 66.81 ± 14.47 years. Fifty-one percent of the operated eyes (447 eyes) were women. 94% of patients belonged to six ethnic groups. The mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) before surgery was 1.98 ± 0.98 logMAR (20/2000), which changed to 0.82 ± 0.68 logMAR (20/150) 3 months after surgeries. The corrected distance visualve visual acuities. Training programs of local surgeons should be reinforced. Some viruses are known to be associated with increased apoptosis. Apoptotic cell death triggered by these viruses has a complex role in host antiviral immunity, and might facilitate the viral clearance or act as a mechanism for virus-induced tissue injury and disease progression. The induction of apoptosis is a hallmark of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Accumulating evidence suggests that there is a direct relationship between apoptosis rate and COVID-19 pathogenicity/severity. Targeting virus-induced apoptosis could be a promising strategy in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection.

The c.1430A > G (Asp477Gly) variant in RPE65 has been reported in Irish and Scottish families with either an autosomal dominant retinal dystrophy (adRD) that resembles choroideremia, a vitelliform macular dystrophy or an isolated macular atrophy. We report novel features on multimodal imaging and the natural history of a family harbouring this variant in combination with the BEST1 c.37C > T (Arg13Cys) variant.

Members of a family with an adRD were examined clinically to ascertain phenotype and underwent genetic testing. Multimodal imaging included widefield colour fundus photography, quantitative autofluorescence (qAF) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Electrophysiology and microperimetry were also performed.

Vision loss was attributed to foveal atrophy in the proband and choroidal neovascularisation and a vitello-eruptive lesion in one affected son. Peripheral retinal white dots corresponding to subretinal deposits were seen in three patients. The median qAF

values in the proband (I1) were low (40 and 101 in OD and OS) at age 79. selleckchem Similarly, the qAF

values for the middle son (II2) were also low (100 and 87 in ODS and OS) at age 60. Electrophysiology showed disproportionate reduction in Arden ratio prior to the gradual loss of full-field responses. Microperimetry demonstrated an enlarging scotoma in the proband.

The coexistence of the pathogenic BEST1 c.37C > T variant may modify clinical features observed in RPE65 adRD. This study expands our understanding of RPE65 adRD as a retinoid cycle disorder supported by the reduced qAF, fine white retinal dots and corresponding subretinal deposits on OCT in affected members.
