Explicit attention to year effects in ecological research serves to illuminate basic ecological principles, allowing for better understanding of contingencies in ecology. These dynamics also have strong implications for applied ecological research, offering new insights into ecological restoration as well as future climate change.We report on an 86-year-old woman with disfiguring skin lesions on her face, referred to us in spring 2017. Her medical history was clear except for an arterial hypertension and a bilateral hilar and peribronchial lymphadenopathy. In 2015 the asymptomatic patient was seen by a pneumologist for a function testing in view of the findings on chest CT scan. An active sarcoidosis however, could not be confirmed then. No significant dysfunction was observed.The anorexic voice (AV) is defined as a critical internal dialogue which has been implicated in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Systematic research to explore this further requires a valid and reliable measurement tool. This study aimed to develop and assess the validity of the Experience of an Anorexic VoicE Questionnaire (EAVE-Q). EAVE-Q items were developed and checked for face and content validity through cognitive interviews with seven individuals diagnosed with AN. Participants with a diagnosis of AN (N = 148) completed the EAVE-Q, sociodemographic questions and measures of mood and quality of life to assess internal consistency and construct validity. Forty-nine participants completed the EAVE-Q twice more to assess test-retest reliability. The EAVE-Q had good face and content validity and good acceptability. Principal axis factoring resulted in an 18-item scale organised into five domains with high internal consistency (α = .70 to α = .85). Domains correlated significantly with eating disorder symptoms, psychological distress and quality of life. The EAVE-Q did not discriminate between participants on the basis of body mass index. Test-retest reliability was moderate. Although the factor structure of the EAVE-Q requires replication in other AN samples, the EAVE-Q is the first measure of a critical internal dialogue in AN. It is hoped that it will aid future research to increase understanding of AN and the continued development of person-centred treatments.Haplotype-based breeding, a recent promising breeding approach to develop tailor-made crop varieties, deals with identification of superior haplotypes and their deployment in breeding programmes. In this context, whole genome re-sequencing data of 292 genotypes from pigeonpea reference set were mined to identify the superior haplotypes for 10 drought-responsive candidate genes. A total of 83, 132 and 60 haplotypes were identified in breeding lines, landraces and wild species, respectively. Candidate gene-based association analysis of these 10 genes on a subset of 137 accessions of the pigeonpea reference set revealed 23 strong marker-trait associations (MTAs) in five genes influencing seven drought-responsive component traits. Haplo-pheno analysis for the strongly associated genes resulted in the identification of most promising haplotypes for three genes regulating five component drought traits. The haplotype C. cajan_23080-H2 for plant weight (PW), fresh weight (FW) and turgid weight (TW), the haplotype C. cajan_30211-H6 for PW, FW, TW and dry weight (DW), the haplotype C. cajan_26230-H11 for FW and DW and the haplotype C. cajan_26230-H5 for relative water content (RWC) were identified as superior haplotypes under drought stress condition. Furthermore, 17 accessions containing superior haplotypes for three drought-responsive genes were identified. The identified superior haplotypes and the accessions carrying these superior haplotypes will be very useful for deploying haplotype-based breeding to develop next-generation tailor-made better drought-responsive pigeonpea cultivars.Background Most public hospitals are receiving more referrals for first specialist assessment than they have capacity to see. Traditional priority categories are too broad for effective discrimination. In New Zealand (NZ) explicit prioritization is required by legislation and supported by the Medical Council of NZ. A new generic National Referral Prioritization tool (NRPT) has been developed which includes a patient impact on life score. This study reports its trial implementation in orthopaedic surgery in a single centre. Methods Four months of referrals to the orthopaedic department were prioritized using the new NRPT and traditional clinical priority categories. Scores and acceptances were compared across conditions, surgeons and against the traditional categories. Results The mean NRPT was 60.1 (range 23-99). The correlation with impact on life was 0.59. There was good consistency of scores between surgeons. The NRPT score was significantly different across clinical priority categories (urgent, semi-urgent, routine). A total of 305 referrals (49%) were accepted using the NRPT compared with 493 (79%) if the traditional tool had been used. Patients with foot and ankle, carpal tunnel syndrome and upper limb conditions had the lowest scores and were more likely to be declined. Conclusions The NRPT is the first tool designed to prioritize referral letters. It is more discriminating than the clinical priority categories used previously. It allows fine-tuning of a threshold score to balance acceptances and capacity.Background Despite the utilization of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) by trauma surgeons, formal POCUS requirements do not exist for general surgery residents. We sought to evaluate surgery resident comfort with performing and interpreting of Extended-Focused Assessment for Sonography in Trauma (E-FAST) scans after a brief educational session. selleck chemicals Methods A pre-survey, sent to PGY-2 and -3 surgical residents before their trauma rotation, evaluated comfort with eight components of the E-FAST. Residents were then required to watch a 15-min online video and attend a 1-h bedside training session moderated by emergency medicine ultrasound fellows during which residents practised E-FAST image acquisition and interpretation. After the rotation, residents completed a post-survey evaluating their comfort with the E-FAST. Results All 27 residents rotating on the trauma service during the 2017-2018 academic year were eligible and, therefore, approached by the study team. Twenty-one (77.78%) residents completed the pre-survey, training and post-survey.
