The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of acupuncture on xerostomia in irradiated patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).

A preventive, 2-arm, parallel, single-blind trial was performed. Patients with HNSCC (N=296) were checked for eligibility, and 107 patients were enrolled in the study. The study comprised 1 group that did not receive the intervention (n=55) and the interventional group that received traditional and auricular acupuncture (n=52). The primary outcome was the reduction of the patients' xerostomia after treatment. In addition, the secondary outcome was the reduction of anxiety.

The current acupuncture protocol reduced the xerostomia score and increased saliva volume and density without changing salivary pH. Additionally, acupuncture decreased the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) score after radiation therapy.

In surgical training, large animal models are more suitable as their anatomy is more similar to humans. In otology, there have been relatively few studies about large animal models for surgical training.

In this study, we aimed to do a neuroradiologic evaluation and surgical insertion of a cochlear implant electrode array on a sheep head model.

Twenty cadaveric sheep heads were studied. A computed tomography scan and neuroradiologic evaluation was performed on each head, obtaining measurements of the inner ear for each sheep. Sheep measurements were compared to those from temporal bone computed tomography scans from 20 female humans. Surgical procedures were first trained with 13 of the sheep temporal bones, after which cochlear implantation was performed on the remaining 7 temporal bones. The position of the inserted electrode array insertion was confirmed by computed tomography scan after the procedure.

Neuroradiologic evaluation showed that, relative to the 20 female humans, the mean ratio for sheep was 0.60 for volume of cochlea, 0.70 for height of cochlea, 0.73 for length of cochlea; ratios for other metrics were >0.80. For the surgical training, the round window was found in all 20 sheep temporal bones. Computed tomography scans confirmed that electrode insertions were fully complete; the mean value of electrode array insertion was 18.3 mm.

The neuroradiologic and surgical training data suggest that the sheep is a realistic animal model to train cochlear implant surgery and collection of perilymph samples, but less so for surgical training of mastoidectomy due to pneumatization of the mastoid.

Hearing loss etiology depends on the population studied as well as on the ethnicity and the socio-economic condition of the analyzed region. Etiological diagnosis contributes to the improvement of preventive measures and to the early identification of this deficiency.

To identify the etiological factors of hearing loss and its prevalence in a tertiary hospital in southern Brazil, to verify the frequency of mutations in GJB2 and GJB6 genes, and to correlate the degree of hearing loss with the etiological factors of deafness.

This prevalence study involved 140 children with bilateral sensorineural or mixed hearing loss. Medical history, physical examination, audiometry, and evoked auditory brainstem response were conducted. Imaging and genetic examinations were also performed.

Etiologies and their prevalence were as follows (a) indeterminate causes, 31.4%; (b) conditions related to neonatal period, 22.1%; (c) genetic, 22.1%; (d) auditory neuropathy, 10%; (e) other factors (cortical malformation, intracrof undiagnosed etiology for hearing loss. The predominance of etiologies related to neonatal conditions and infectious causes are characteristic of developing countries. The most prevalent mutation was 35delG, the main GJB2 gene, probably because of the European influence in the genotype of our population.

There are limited studies on species distribution and susceptibility profiles of Aspergillus strains isolated from patients with otomycosis in China.

A total of 69 confirmed Aspergillus species isolates were obtained from ear swabs of patients diagnosed with otomycosis from 2017 to 2018 in northern China. Identification of these Aspergillus isolates at the species level was performed using conventional morphological methods and MALDI-TOF MS in combination with molecular sequencing, and invitro susceptibility to nine antifungal agents was evaluated using the Sensititre YeastOne system.

The Aspergillus section Nigri had the greatest distribution of Aspergillus isolates. A. welwitschiae (n=25) was the most predominant isolate in section Nigri, followed by A. tubingensis (n=12) and A. niger (n=11). Other Aspergillus species were also isolated, including A. terreus (n=11), A. flavus/A. oryzae (n=8), and A. LY3200882 fumigatus (n=2). Amphotericin B, posaconazole, and echinocandins were highly invitro active against all the isolates tested. 2.9% (2/69) of the isolates were resistant to azoles in our study, including one A. niger isolate with a high MIC value for itraconazole (ITR) (16mg/L) and one A. tubingensis isolate cross-resistant to both voriconazole (VOR) (MIC >8mg/L) and ITR (MIC >16mg/L). One A. welwitschiae and one A. niger isolate both had increased MIC values of 4mg/L against VOR.

A. welwitschiae was the most prevalent Aspergillus species isolated from patients with otomycosis. Our findings also indicated that the azole-resistant Aspergillus section Nigri should be utilized to guide clinical medication for Otomycosis.
