Cynara cardunculus L. is a perennial species with high potential for bioenergy production. Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis (AMF) is probably the terrestrial symbiosis most extended on earth. It presence in roots and soils improves plant nutrition and soil quality. Indigenous AMF have developed a variety of modifications to survive in their habitat and thus could serve as potential inoculants for the implantation of plant species in the respective AMF soil habitat. This work aimed to diagnose the status of the AMF symbiosis associated to two cardoon cultivars after a year of growth in a saline soil and in a conventional farming soil. For that purpose we determined AMF parameters in 4 rhizospheric soils and in roots of the cardoon varieties. We found that (1) the rhizosphere of C. cardunculus var. altilis positively influenced the extraradical mycelium development in the saline soil, (2) the inorganic fertilization history of the conventional farming soil could have had a negative effect on the AMF community and, (3) the intraradical mycelium (IRM) development was extremely low. Our diagnosis suggests that, in order to improve the positive effects of AMF on cardoon growth and soil quality, efforts should be focused on the development of the IRM. In a boarder sense, the implementation of a diagnosis of indigenous AMF communities as a general agronomic practice could become an useful tool to farmers that are willing to potentiate the benefits of AMF on plant growth and soil quality.Halomonas alkalicola CICC 11012s can grow at pH 12.5, the highest pH at which the organisms in the genus Halomonas can grow. Genomic analysis reveals that H. alkalicola adapts to alkaline stress using a variety of adaptive strategies; however, the detailed mechanism for its growth at high-alkaline conditions has not been elucidated. Therefore, in this study, the adaptations of H. alkalicola in response to extreme alkaline stress were investigated. A sharp decrease of alkaliphilic tolerance was observed in mutants E. coli ΔEctonB and H. alkalicola ΔHatonB. Expressions of the gene clusters encoding TonB-dependent transport system and iron complex transport system in H. alkalicola grown under extreme alkaline conditions were markedly up-regulated. We then compared the intracellular ionic iron content and iron-chelating ability of mutant strain with those of wild-type strain to understand the influence of TonB-dependent transport system on the alkaline responses. The results indicated that the presence of TonB-dependent transport system increased the alkaline tolerance of H. Terephthalic cost alkalicola grown at high-alkaline conditions, but had no effects when the strain was grown at neutral pH and low-alkaline conditions. Meanwhile, the presence of this system increased the transport and accumulation of ionic irons to maintain intracellular metabolic homeostasis, which in turn could increase the tolerance of the strain to extreme alkaline conditions. Based on the results, we established a model representing the interactions between TonB-dependent transport system, alkaline tolerance, and intracellular ionic iron that could help deepen the understanding of the alkaline response mechanism of alkaliphilic bacteria.

To evaluate the overall incidence and types of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries associated with tibial plateau fractures (TPFs) following closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF), and to identify the relationship between the incidence and types of cruciate ligamentous injuries with Schatzker classification and "three-column" classification.

From January 2016 to January 2018, 185 patients with closed TPFs who underwent CRIF were included in this retrospective study. All patients were performed with arthroscopic examination after CRIF, and then, the incidence and types of cruciate ligamentous injuries were recorded and evaluated.

The overall incidence rates of cruciate ligamentous injuries associated with TPFs were 37.3% with 21.6% of these being ACL injuries and 15.7% had PCL injuries. Importantly, patients with fractures in "two-column" fractures have a significantly higher incidence rate of ACL avulsion fracture and PCL complete tears (P < classification (P> 0.05).

In the recognition of concomitant cruciate ligamentous injuries associated with TPFs based on Schatzker classification and three-column classification, orthopaedic trauma surgeons may better guide optimal surgical protocols for patients.

This study examined MeHg accumulation and its toxicological role in antioxidant defenses in tissues, including the liver, gills, and muscle of flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) juveniles. After 30 d of MeHg exposure (0, 0.1, 1.0, 10.0, and 20.0 µg L-1), the accumulation of MeHg in the three tissues correlated positively with the concentration of MeHg and exhibited tissue specificity in the order of liver > gills > muscle. Among the antioxidant markers, the activities of SOD (superoxide dismutase) and GST (glutathione S-transferase) as well as the content of glutathione (GSH) in the liver and gills were induced at 0.1-10.0 µg L-1 but repressed at 20.0 µg L-1. The activities of SOD and GST and the content of GSH in the muscle significantly increased with increasing MeHg concentration. Catalase (CAT) activity in the liver was induced at 0.1-1.0 µg L-1 but inhibited at 10.0-20.0 µg L-1, whereas exposure to MeHg did not remarkably affect CAT activity in the gills and muscle. The levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) increased dose dependently, showing tissue specificity with the highest level in the liver, then the gills, followed by muscles. Overall, higher sensitivity to oxidative stress induced by MeHg was detected in the liver than the gills and muscle. These findings improve our understanding of the tissue-specific accumulation of heavy metals and their roles in antioxidant responses in marine fish subjected to MeHg exposure.
