Suicide attempts represent a public health concern. The objective of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics of patients visiting an emergency room for a suicide attempt and included in a suicide prevention program, the Catalonia Suicide Risk Code (CSRC), particularly focusing on the follow-up evaluations.
The CSRC program is divided in 3 phases (1) alert and activation, (2) proactive telephone and face-to-face follow-up and (3) comprehensive preventive health monitoring. This is the analysis of the sample of patients attempting or intending suicide who were seen at a tertiary hospital in Barcelona, and their 1-year follow-up outcome.
Three hundred and sixty-five patients were included. In 15% of the cases, there was no previous psychiatric history but in the majority of cases, a previous psychiatric diagnosis was present. The most common type of suicide attempt was by drug overdose (84%). Up to 66.6% of the patients attended the scheduled follow-up visit in the CSRC program. Crenolanib A significant reduction in the proportion of patients visiting the emergency room for any reason (but not specifically for a suicide attempt) and being hospitalized in the first semester in comparison with the second six months after the CSRC activation (30.1% versus 19.9%, p=0.006; 14.1% versus 5.8%, p=0.002) was observed.
The clinical risk factors and the findings of the CSRC helped in the characterization of suicide attempters. The CSRC may contribute to reduce hospitalizations and the use of mental health care resources, at least in the short-term.

In colorectal cancer, approximately 95% of patients are refractory to immunotherapy because of low antitumor immune responses. Therefore, there is an exigent need to develop treatments that increase antitumor immune responses and decrease tumor burden to enhance immunotherapy.
The gut microbiome has been described as a master modulator of immune responses. We administered the human commensal, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), to mice and characterized the changes in the gut immune landscape. Because the presence of lactobacilli in the gut microbiome has been linked with decreased tumor burden and antitumor immune responses, we also supplemented a genetic and a chemical model of murine intestinal cancer with LGG. For clinical relevance, we therapeutically administered LGG after tumors had formed. We also tested for the requirement of CD8 T cells in LGG-mediated modulation of gut tumor burden.
We detected increased colonic CD8 T-cell responses specifically in LGG-supplemented mice. The CD8 T-cell induction was dependent on dendritic cell activation mediated via Toll-like receptor-2, thereby describing a novel mechanism in which a member of the human microbiome induces an intestinal CD8 T-cell response. We also show that LGG decreased tumor burden in the murine gut cancer models by a CD8 T-cell-dependent manner.
These data support the potential use of LGG to augment antitumor immune responses in colorectal cancer patients and ultimately for increasing the breadth and efficacy of immunotherapy.

The transcription factor GATA4 is broadly expressed in nascent foregut endoderm. As development progresses, GATA4 is lost in the domain giving rise to the stratified squamous epithelium of the esophagus and forestomach (FS), while it is maintained in the domain giving rise to the simple columnar epithelium of the hindstomach (HS). Differential GATA4 expression within these domains coincides with the onset of distinct tissue morphogenetic events, suggesting a role for GATA4 in diversifying foregut endoderm into discrete esophageal/FS and HS epithelial tissues. The goal of this study was to determine how GATA4 regulates differential morphogenesis of the mouse gastric epithelium.
We used a Gata4 conditional knockout mouse line to eliminate GATA4 in the developing HS and a Gata4 conditional knock-in mouse line to express GATA4 in the developing FS.
We found that GATA4-deficient HS epithelium adopted an FS-like fate, and conversely, that GATA4-expressing FS epithelium adopted an HS-like fate. Underlying stru. Moreover, similarities between mutants and Barrett's esophagus suggest that developmental biology can provide insight into human disease mechanisms. As the abundance of microplastics and nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) increases in the environment, their presence in agricultural soil has become of interest. MPs/NPs can affect soil physical and chemical properties and be absorbed by plants and soil animals, causing physical and chemical damage. Soil MPs exceeding a certain concentration cause significant harm. Therefore, the extraction and identification of MPs in soil are vital for determining soil pollution. However, soils contain many other particles of similar size to MPs/NPs, making it more difficult to distinguish them than in water bodies. No standardized extraction and identification method is available to quantify MPs/NPs in soil. Various methods have been described in the literature, but they involve many different procedures for sampling, purification, digestion, and identification. This paper reviews extraction and identification methods for MPs/NPs in soil, sediment, and water and summarizes agricultural soil sampling and preservation, MPs/NPs separation, organic matter removal, and MPs/NPs identification. We also compare the advantages and disadvantages of existing methods and propose future research topics.Leather post-tanning is responsible for producing effluents that are difficult to treat due to several recalcitrant pollutants. Dyes, tannins, and fatliquoring agents are mainly related to this characteristic. This study, as the state-of-the-art, attempts to systematically review treatment technologies applied in recent years to the post-tanning effluents. The Scopus database was used to identify articles related to post-tanning pollutants removal. Through the review, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) and adsorption proved to be good alternatives to increase the effluent biodegradability when applied before biological treatment. AOPs and adsorption were also efficient for the final polishing of the effluents, to reach the regulation standards for disposal, as well as enzymatic treatment. Furthermore, Membrane Separation Processes demonstrated good applicability when the reuse of the treated effluent is aimed.
