To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the "FETCH-Q™", 228 dogs with cardiovascular diseases were included. After forward and back translation of the original questionnaire, nonexperts, ethologists and veterinary colleagues evaluated the content's validity through feedback. For criteria validity, the total score was correlated with the heart disease/failure class. For construct validity, the overall quality of life of the dog and the results obtained in each question was correlated. The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient. To evaluate the test-retest validity the intra-class correlation coefficient and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used. A good agreement with the original questionnaire was evident. For construct validity, the questionnaire obtained r > 0.09 to .05). This study supports the validity of psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the functional evaluation of cardiac health questionnaire "FETCHSV2-Q™" to assess Health-related Quality of Life in dogs with cardiovascular disease in clinical settings and research. The aim of this study was to gain a greater understanding of the detection, treatment, and monitoring of hypovolemic shock (HVS) in dogs by general practitioners in the United Kingdom (UK). An online survey was devised and distributed by email to first opinion practices in the UK. All veterinarians working in first opinion practice treating small animals were eligible to complete the survey. Most respondents (n = 164, 93%) were confident with HVS diagnosis. Isotonic crystalloid fluids were the most common fluid type for first-line treatment and administered as a 10-30 mL/kg bolus over 10-30 minutes by 57% respondents. Initial intravenous isotonic crystalloid fluid rates for HVS management ranged from maintenance fluid requirements to 90 mL/kg/hr for an undefined time period. A synthetic colloid was the most popular second-line fluid choice, typically considered after a total administered volume of 60-90 mL/kg of isotonic crystalloid fluids. Only 72 respondents (40.7%) were able to measure blood lactate in-house, which was used routinely by 36 respondents (20.3%) for initial treatment decision making. Respondents treating HVS most frequently were more likely to use lactate for initial decision making (P = .008). This study highlighted variabilities in the initial approach, fluid management strategies and monitoring instituted by UK general practitioners when faced with canine patients in HVS. This suggests that there is a discrepancy in what is determined to be the most optimal diagnostic and treatment plan for canine HVS patients.Rapid activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system are hallmarks of the acute stress response and these systems interact with the immune system by signaling though glucocorticoid and adrenergic receptors on immune cells. There is limited information about the effect of these physiologic responses on immunologic parameters of pet dogs enrolled in clinical studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate how travel, instrumentation, and hospitalization alter immunologic parameters in pet dogs. Blood was collected from healthy dogs in a home environment and from healthy dogs at the time of presentation to the hospital and after instrumentation and 24 hours of hospitalization. We found that lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced downregulation of toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) was blunted in dogs exposed to stress. Neutrophil and monocyte major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII) expression increased after transportation to the veterinary hospital but then became similar to that of the control dogs at the end of hospitalization. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell cytotoxicity function was blunted in dogs exposed to the stress of transportation as well as hospitalization. Neutrophil apoptosis was greater in dogs exposed to stress compared to controls although this effect significantly decreased after hospitalization stress. Conversely, stress did not alter induced or spontaneous cytokine production from leukocytes, neutrophil or monocyte expression of TLR4, LPS-induced downregulation of monocyte TLR4, LPS-induced neutrophil and monocyte expression of MHCII or peripheral blood lymphocyte phenotype. Transportation and instrumentation/hospitalization stress should be considered when interpreting immunologic studies in pet dogs.According to American Veterinary Medical Association statistics, veterinarians employed in the not-for-profit sector account for the smallest group by type of employment. However, this group has experienced the greatest amount of change, with an increase of 52% between 2008 and 2013 and 55% between 2013 and 2018. Despite this growth, there has been a paucity of information regarding the salary, benefits, hours, and job duties that come with a career in shelter medicine. An initial survey of shelter medicine salary, benefits, hours, and job duties was conducted in 2011, and a similar survey conducted in 2018. All responses were anonymous. Results from 2018 were compared to 2011 using 2 sample test of proportions (counts) or Mann-Whitney (Wilcoxon rank sum) test (medians). A total of 207 conforming responses were received in 2011, and 219 in 2018. Median salary for all full-time veterinarians in the field of shelter medicine was $75,000 (interquartile range [IQR], 65,000-85,000) in 2011 and $94,500 (IQR, 80,000elter medicine education and increased number of boarded specialists. Many Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains produce biofilm that confers antimicrobial resistance. However, studies of biofilm production by E. ABL001 coli from canine pyometra are lacking. Objectives were to elucidate the role of biofilm production by E. coli in pyometra by (1) assessing the ability of E. coli to produce biofilm in vitro, and (2) confirming biofilm in situ. Endometrial biopsies were obtained from bitches with pyometra and preserved for microscopic analysis (n = 25). An endometrial swab was submitted for aerobic culture. Samples with confirmed E. coli were evaluated further for biofilm production in vitro and in vivo. Seventy percent of cases (16/23) resulted in pure growth of 1 or 2 E. coli strains, totaling 20 isolates. Fifteen isolates (15/20, 75%) had higher optical densities then negative controls (P less then .05). On histopathology, all tissues exhibited endometrial inflammation and mucus was located within endometrial glands and occasionally overlying epithelium on 14 slides (14/16, 88%). Bacteria was noted in 50% of slides (8/16).
