American Indian (AI), Alaska Native (AN), and Native Hawaiian (NH) populations report higher rates of diabetes, poorer oral health, and fewer dental visits than their peers. The authors aimed to identify relationships between oral health and dental visits and diabetes diagnosis among AI, AN, and NH elders.

Data were obtained from a national survey of AI, AN, and NH elders 55 years and older (April 2014-2017) and included 16,136 respondents. Frequencies and χ

tests were used to assess the relationship between oral health and dental visits, and diabetes.

Nearly one-half of the elders reported receiving a diagnosis of diabetes (49.2%). A significantly (P < .01) greater proportion of elders with diabetes reported a dental visit in the past year (57.8%) than those without. Untreated caries (UC), although highly prevalent, is largely preventable. Information on the contribution of different teeth to UC prevalence and severity could be helpful in evaluating UC surveillance protocols and the relative benefits of caries prevention interventions.

The authors combined data from 3 cycles (2011-2016) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for participants aged 6 through 11 years, 12 through 19 years, 20 through 34 years, 35 through 49 years, 50 through 64 years, 65 through 74 years, and 75 years and older. For each age group the authors calculated the contribution of successive permanent tooth types (for example, first molars and second molars) to UC prevalence and severity.

UC prevalence and the percentage of prevalence detected by means of screening molars were, respectively, 5% and 95% among participants aged 6 through 11 years; 16% and 92% among participants aged 12 through 19 years; 29% and 86% among participants aged 20 through 34 years; 26% and 70% among participants aged 35 through 49 years; 21% and 48% among participants aged 50 through 64 years; 16% and 36% among participants aged 65 through 74 years; and 17% and 25% among participants 75 years and older. Among adults aged 50 years and older, no teeth appeared to capture a disproportionate share of UC prevalence. Molars accounted for 87%, 79%, and 56% of severity among participants aged 6 through 11 years, 12 through 19 years, and 20 through 34 years, respectively. After age 34 years, molars accounted for less than 50% of severity.

Contact tracing has proven successful at controlling coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) globally, and the Center for Health Security has recommended that the United States add 100,000 contact tracers to the current workforce.

To address gaps in local contact tracing, health professional students partnered with their academic institution to conduct contact tracing for all COVID-19 cases diagnosed onsite, which included identifying and reaching their contacts, educating participants, and providing social resources to support effective quarantine and isolation.

From March 24 to May 28, 536 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases were contacted and reported an average of 2.6 contacts. Contacts were informed of their exposure, asked to quarantine, and monitored for the onset of symptoms. Callers reached 94% of cases and 84% of contacts. Using a high-throughput liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based approach, we established the preliminary metabolomic profile of crossbred and zebu bull spermatozoa (n=3 bulls each) and identified changes in sperm metabolomics between the two groups. In all, 1732 and 1240 metabolites were detected in zebu and crossbred bull spermatozoa respectively. After excluding exogenous metabolites, 115 and 87 metabolites were found to be unique to zebu and crossbred bull spermatozoa respectively whereas 71 metabolites were common to both. In the normalised data, 49 metabolites were found to be differentially expressed between zebu and crossbred bull spermatozoa. The significantly enriched (P1.0) was upregulated in crossbred bull spermatozoa. In conclusion, this study established the metabolomic profile of zebu and crossbred bull spermatozoa and suggests that aberrations in taurine, hypotaurine and glycerophospholipid metabolism may be associated with the higher incidence of infertility/subfertility in crossbred bulls.
