Tuber species may be regarded as complex microhabitats hosting diverse microorganisms inside their fruiting bodies. selleck chemical Here, we investigated the structure of microbial communities inhabiting the gleba of wild growing (in stands) T. aestivum, using Illumina sequencing and culture-based methods. The two methods used in combination allowed to extract more information on complex microbiota of Tuber aestivum gleba. Analysis of the V3-V4 region of 16S rDNA identified nine phyla of bacteria present in the gleba of T. aestivum ascomata, mostly Proteobacteria from the family Bradyrhizobiaceae. Our results ideally match the earlier data for other Tuber species where the family Bradyrhizobiaceae was the most represented. The ITS1 region of fungal rDNA represented six alien fungal species belonging to three phyla. To complement the metagenomic analysis, cultivable fungi and bacteria were obtained from the gleba of the same T. aestivum fruiting bodies. The identified fungi mostly belong to the phylum Basidiomycota and same to Ascomycota. Analysis of cultivable bacteria revealed that all the specimens were colonized by different strains of Bacillus. Fungal community inhabiting T. aestivum fruiting bodies was never shown before.
Cold exposure activates the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, response blunted by previous acute stress or corticosterone administration. Chronic stressors can decrease serum T3 concentration, and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (Trh) expression in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), but impact onthe response to cold is unknown; this was studied in rats submitted to daily repeated restraint (rRes) that causes habituation of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis response, or to chronic variable stress (CVS) that causes sensitization and hyperreactivity.
Wistar male adult rats were submitted to rRes 30min/day, or to CVS twice a day, for 15 days. On day 16, rats were exposed 1h to either 5 or 21°C. Parameters of HPT and HPA axes activity and of brown adipose tissue (BAT) cold response were measured; gene expression in PVN and BAT, by RT-PCR; serum hormone concentration by radioimmunoassay or ELISA.
Compared to naïve animals, Crh and corticosterone concentrations were attenuated at the end of rRes, but increased at the end of CVS treatments. Cold exposure increased mRNA levels of Crh, Trh, and serum concentration of thyrotropin in naïve, but not in rRes or CVS rats; corticosterone increased in all groups. Cold induced expression of thermogenic genes in BAT (Dio2 and Ucp1) in naïve but not in stressed rats; Adrb3 expression was differentially regulated.
Both types of chronic stress blunted HPT and BAT responses to cold. Long-term stress effects on noradrenergic and/or hormonal signaling are likely responsible for HPT dysfunction and not the type of chronic stressor.

Heart failure (HF) is considered an important contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in diabetes mellitus. However, a precise identification of hyperglycemia as contributor for HF is missing.
We performed a review and a meta-regression of the available observational studies on the incidence of HF in type 1 diabetes (T1D).
We conducted a systematic search of the literature on the incidence of HF in patients with T1D identifying suitable studies published between January 1970 and June 2018 using the following search string "type 1 diabetes" AND, "heart failure" OR "cardiac failure" OR "congestive heart failure" AND "incidence" NOT "type 2 diabetes" OR "diabetes type 2". Six observational studies were included. A random effect meta-regression model has been estimated to evaluate the incidence rate ratio (IRR) of HF in T1D compared to healthy controls.
The mean ± SD age of patients with T1D was 42 ± 11years, the mean HbA1c was 8.4 ± 0.3%, and average follow-up was 11 ± 3years. The age-adjusted model shows an incidence rate ratio (IRR) effect of 3.18 (p < 0.001), in correspondence of the mean age at enrollment of studies involved in the analysis. A negative correlation was observed between IRR and average age.
This review shows that the incidence rate of HF is three times higher in patients with T1D than in controls. A careful surveillance of the risk factors for this condition should be included, since the onset of T1D may be important to reduce HF risk in these patients.

With currently 1980 described species, the mega-diverse Begonia is now perhaps the 5th largest flowering plant genus, expanding rapidly from ca. 900 species in 1997 to its current size in merely two decades. In continuation of our studies of Asian Begonia, we report six additional new species from Guangxi, the region/province harboring the second richest Begonia flora of China.
Based on morphological and molecular data, the new species B. aurora belongs to Begonia sect. Platycentrum, while the other five new species (viz. B. larvata, B. longiornithophylla, B. lui, B. scabrifolia, and B. zhuoyuniae) are members of Sect. Coelocentrum. Somatic chromosome numbers of B. longiornithophylla and B. zhuoyuniae at metaphase were counted as 2n = 30, consistent with previously reports for Sect. Coelocentrum.

Here we describe a case of an 84-year-old patient with alcoholic cirrhosis who presented with persistent melena and progressive anemia. Endoscopy showed esophageal varices and he underwent endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) with transient resolution of anemia. However, due to worsening anemia, he underwent capsule endoscopy that revealed a bleeding tumor in the small intestine. We performed double-balloon endoscopy and found a 7-mm polyp with a white coat located in the jejunum and resected it at a later date. Histological characteristics led to the diagnosis of PG, and the patient's melena and anemia subsequently improved.
