A total of 9260 German students aged 10-17 participated in a three-factorial experiment, embedded in a health survey. The first experimental factor was the position of the AWL on the questionnaire (before vs. after alcohol items). The second factor was the type of AWL (text only vs. text plus picture). The third factor was the content of the AWL (one out of a pool of ten). Dependent variables were knowledge about alcohol-related risks, self-reports of alcohol use, and negative emotions. Regression analyses revealed that exposure to an AWL significantly increased knowledge about alcohol-related risks. AWL exposure did not influence self-reports of alcohol use in the total sample, but a significant interaction for PositionXAge indicated that older students (15+ years) less frequently reported lifetime (79.8% vs. 84.2%) and current (50.5% vs. 56.6%) use of alcohol if they were exposed to an AWL. Overall, text-only AWL elicited less negative emotions than text-and-picture based AWL. The experiment indicates that exposure to an AWL affected alcohol-related cognitions of children and adolescents. This was true for both, text-based or picture-and-text-based labels. Pictorial messages seem to be more potent to elicit emotions, at least for recipients that already have experience with alcohol use. Future research needs to further explore the long-term effects of repeated exposure to the same message contents.

There has been a tremendous increase in the use of smartphones among college students and alongside the benefits there is growing concern over problematic/addictive smartphone use (PSU). Among the most robust predictors of behavioral and substance use disorders are a subset of adverse childhood experiences conceptualized as household dysfunction (HHD). Despite the high prevalence of HHD and risk of PSU among college students, research investigating the link between HHD and PSU among college populations is sparse, especially in the United States.

Students (N=351) from a diverse, southern California university responded to an online survey. Regression models assessed the association between HHD (e.g., parent alcohol and drug use, mental health, incarceration, suicide, intimate partner violence, separation/divorce, and homelessness; categorized into 0, 1-3, and 4 or more) and PSU using Smartphone Addiction Scale short version (SAS-SV) scale, adjusted for covariates.

Over 50% of students reported at least one type of household dysfunction and about 25% were at high risk for PSU. Compared to students who report no household stressors, students with 1-3 had twice the odds (AOR 2.11, 95% CI 1.13-3.83) and students with 4 or more had four times the odds (AOR 4.01, 95% CI 2.35-6.82) of PSU, after adjusting for covariates. There were no sex differences in this association.

Findings suggest that household dysfunction can increase the likelihood of developing behavioral disorders such as PSU. Implications for prevention efforts are discussed.

Mounting epidemiological evidence suggests an association between prenatal tobacco exposure and an increased risk of tobacco smoking in offspring. However, it is uncertain whether the association is due to the intrauterine or shared environmental exposures.

Study participants were from the Raine Study, a prospective birth cohort study based in Perth, Western Australia (N=2730). Tobacco smoking in adolescents, at age 17years, was measured using a self-reported questionnaire. Log-binomial regression was used to estimate the relative risks (RRs) of tobacco smoking in offspring exposed to maternal prenatal tobacco use during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy. We have also calculated the E-values to investigate the potential effect of unmeasured confounding. Paternal smoking during pregnancy was used as a negative control for comparison.

A total of 1210 mothers-offspring pairs were included in the final analysis. After controlling for potential confounders, we found increased risks of tobacco smoking in offspring exposed to maternal prenatal tobacco use during the first trimester [RR 1.
