The results indicate the vitamin D deficiency and disturbed oxidant-antioxidant homeostasis in LOCP patients. Osteopontin seems to be associated with LOCP carcinogenesis and requires further research.

Although recent studies suggest that the prevalence of food allergy (FA) has not changed, the data from developing countries are limited. This study aimed to investigate time trends in the prevalence of FA among preschool children in 2010 and 2019 in Northern Thailand.

Two cross-sectional studies were performed, 9 years apart (2010 and 2019), using the same methods, in children aged 3-7 years living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Parent-reporting questionnaire surveys were conducted. Families with children reporting FA were invited to undergo further investigations with skin prick testing, serum specific IgE, and oral food challenge (OFC). The prevalence of parent-reported FA, food sensitization, and OFC-confirmed FA were compared between the 2 periods.

A total of 1013 out of 1146 questionnaires (452/546 in 2010 and 561/600 in 2019) were returned. The response rate was 88.4%. The prevalence of parent-reported food allergy in 2019 was significantly lower than that in 2010 (5.5% vs 9.3%;

=0.02). However, there was no significant change in the prevalence of OFC-confirmed FA (0.9% vs 1.1%;

=0.75). Three leading causative foods of parent-reported FA were cow's milk, shrimp, and eggs. Shrimp was still the most common OFC-confirmed food allergen. Atopic dermatitis was the most significantly parent reported factor associated with FA.

The overall prevalence of FA among preschool children in Northern Thailand had not increased during the past decade. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of OFC-confirmed FA between 2010 and 2019.

Instructors can teach evolution using any number of species contexts. However, not all species contexts are equal, and taxa choice can alter both cognitive and affective elements of learning. This is particularly true when teaching evolution using human examples, a promising method for evolution instruction that nevertheless comes with unique challenges. In this study, we tested how an evolution lesson focused on a human example may impact students' engagement, perceived content relevance, learning gains, and level of discomfort, when compared to the same lesson using a non-human mammal example. We use this isomorphic lesson and a pre-post study design administered in a split-section introductory biology classroom to isolate the importance of the species context.

For two of the four measurements of interest, the effect of using human examples could not be understood without accounting for student background. For learning gains, students with greater pre-class content knowledge benefited more from the human examples, while those with low levels of knowledge benefited from the non-human example. For perceived relevance, students who were more accepting of human evolution indicated greater content relevance from the human example. Regardless of condition, students with lower evolution acceptance reported greater levels of discomfort with the lesson.

Our results illustrate the complexities of using human examples to teach evolution. While these examples were beneficial for many students, they resulted in worse outcomes for students that were less accepting of evolution and those who entered the course with less content knowledge. Epigenetics activator These findings demonstrate the need to consider diverse student backgrounds when establishing best practices for using human examples to teach evolution.

However, the computational models of the knee have historically relied on in vitro data to create and calibrate model material properties due to the unavailability of accurate in vivo data. This work demonstrates the design and use of a custom device to quantify anterior-posterior (AP) and internal-external (IE) in vivo knee laxity, with an accuracy similar to existing in vitro methods. The device uses high-speed stereo radiography (HSSR) tracking techniques to accurately measure the resulting displacements of the femur, tibia, and patella bones during knee laxity assessment at multiple loads and knee flexion angles. The accuracy of the knee laxity apparatus was determined by comparing laxity data from two cadaveric specimens between the knee laxity apparatus and an existing in vitro robotic knee joint simulator. The accuracy of the knee laxity apparatus was within 1 mm (0.04 in.) for AP and 2.5 deg for IE. Additionally, two living subjects completed knee laxity testing to confirm the laboratory use of the novel apparatus. This work demonstrates the ability to use custom devices in HSSR to collect accurate data, in vivo, for calibration of computational models.Ohio is one of the states most impacted by the opioid epidemic and experienced the second highest age-adjusted fatal drug overdose rate in 2017. Initially it was believed prescription opioids were driving the opioid crisis in Ohio. However, as the epidemic evolved, opioid overdose deaths due to fentanyl have drastically increased. In this work we develop a Bayesian multivariate spatiotemporal model for Ohio county overdose death rates from 2007 to 2018 due to different types of opioids. The log-odds are assumed to follow a spatially varying change point regression model. By assuming the regression coefficients are a multivariate conditional autoregressive process, we capture spatial dependence within each drug type and also dependence across drug types. The proposed model allows us to not only study spatiotemporal trends in overdose death rates but also to detect county-level shifts in these trends over time for various types of opioids.

To introduce a modified transverse process-pedicle puncture technique applied to unilateral extrapedicular percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) for the treatment of osteoporotic lumbar vertebral compression fractures.

A retrospective study was performed on 91 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) who underwent unilateral extrapedicular PVP from June 2016 to September 2018. Lumbar and back pain was assessed through the visual analogue scale (VAS). Function recovery was assessed through the Oswestry disability index (ODI). Radiologic outcomes were assessed mainly on the basis of bone cement distribution and anterior vertebral height.

A total of 101 fractured vertebrae were successfully treated using the extrapedicular technique without any recognized clinical complications. The postoperative VAS and ODI values were significantly lower than the corresponding preoperative values (

< 0.01). Radiologic outcomes in all fractured vertebrae showed that the diffusion of bone cement could exceed the midline of the vertebral body. There was no significant difference between preoperative and postoperative anterior vertebral heights (

< 0.05).

The modified transverse process-pedicle approach applied to unilateral extrapedicular percutaneous vertebroplasty is a simple, safe, and effective surgical method.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2019 to March 2020 to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at Yifag Health Center.

The data were collected by a questionnaire interview technique and collecting the stool samples from each pregnant woman. Wet-mount and formol-ether concentration techniques were applied to identify the IPIs. Data were analyzed using SPSS, version 25, and

-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Out of the total 280 pregnant women who were selected using a simple random sampling technique, 277 participated in the questionnaire survey and gave stool samples (a response rate of 98.9%). The prevalence of IPIs among pregnant women was 53.4% (95% CI 47.37, 59.42).

The prevalence of intestinal parasites was high and still a health burden to the pregnant women in the study area. We recommend avoiding eating raw meat, strengthening sanitation and hygiene programs, and routine deworming of pregnant mothers to reduce the burden of IPIs among pregnant women.Dengue fever is a leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics, and the disease has become a threat to many nonendemic countries where the competent vectors such as Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti are abundant. The dengue epidemic in Tokyo, 2014, poses the critical importance to accurately model and predict the outbreak risk of dengue fever in nonendemic regions. Using climatological datasets and traveler volumes in Japan, where dengue was not seen for 70 years by 2014, we investigated the outbreak risk of dengue in 47 prefectures, employing the temperature-dependent basic reproduction number and a branching process model. Our results show that the effective reproduction number varies largely by season and by prefecture, and, moreover, the probability of outbreak if an untraced case is imported varies greatly with the calendar time of importation and location of destination. Combining the seasonally varying outbreak risk with time-dependent traveler volume data, the unconditional outbreak risk was calculated, illustrating different outbreak risks between southern coastal areas and northern tourist cities. As the main finding, the large travel volume with nonnegligible risk of outbreak explains the reason why a summer outbreak in Tokyo, 2014, was observed. Prefectures at high risk of future outbreak would be Tokyo again, Kanagawa or Osaka, and highly populated prefectures with large number of travelers.

The urea-to-albumin ratio (UAR), as a new marker of the systemic inflammatory response, is associated with the mortality in pneumonia patients. However, the association between the UAR and in-hospital mortality in severe pneumonia (SP) has received little attention.

In this single-center retrospective cohort study, 212 SP patients in intensive care unit (ICU) from June 1, 2016, to June 1st, 2020, with baseline UAR were enrolled. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. The association of UAR with in-hospital mortality was assessed using a multivariable-adjusted Cox model.

Of 212 patients, the median age was 73.0 (61.0, 82.8) years, 70.8% of patients were male, and the APACHE II score was 20.0 (16.0, 26.0). During the hospital period, 101 (47.6%) patients died. In-hospital mortality rates for the lower and higher UAR were 16 (27.6%) and 85 (55.2%), respectively (

< 0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that survival rates were significantly different between the two groups (log rank = 13.71,
