This study aimed to investigate the potential hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxic, and hematotoxic effects of simultaneous occupational low-level exposure of shoe workers to a mixture of organic solvents. The study included 16 male and 55 female workers and non-exposed subjects (n = 60) in the control group. selleck chemicals llc Along with a standard sets of hematological, liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), bilirubin total, bilirubin direct, blood glucose, urea, and creatinine were analyzed in all participants. Indoor air quality was monitored using a Gasmet Dx - 4000 multi-component analyzer. Despite the concentration levels of individual chemicals in shoe production units were below the permissible limits, the equivalent exposure (Em) values calculated based on the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) occupational exposure limits were higher than 1. Statistically significant increase of biochemical parameters (aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), total bilirubin, and direct bilirubin) was obtained in exposed workers of both genders compared with controls (p  less then  0.001). Calculated liver damage risk scores were significantly higher in both females and males compared with controls (p  less then  0.001). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that direct bilirubin was the most important predictor of organic solvent mixture exposure in the studied group of workers. These results suggest that combined exposure to organic solvents even at low concentrations may lead to hepatotoxicity.

To review and quantify the effects of walking training for the improvement of various aspects of physical function of people with chronic stroke.

We conducted a systematic search and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of chronic stroke rehabilitation interventions published from 2008 to 2020 in English or French. Of the 6476-screened articles collated from four databases, 15 RCTs were included and analyzed. We performed a meta-regression with the total training time as dependent variable in order to have a better understanding of how did the training dosage affect the effect sizes.

Treadmill walking training was more effective on balance and motor functions (standardized mean difference (SMD)=0.70[0.02, 1.37],

 = 0.04) and 0.56[0.15, 0.96],

= 0.007 respectively). Overground walking training improved significantly walking endurance (SMD = 0.38[0.16, 0.59],

 < 0.001), walking speed (MD = 0.12[0.05, 0.18],

 < 0.001), participation (SMD = 0.35[0.02, 0.68],

= 0.04) and quaprotocols consisting of ≥30 min sessions conducted at least 3 days per week for about 8 weeks are beneficial for improving motor impairments, activity limitations, participation, and quality of life in people with chronic stroke.Implications for rehabilitationTreadmill walking training is effective for improving balance and motor functions.Overground walking training improved significantly walking endurance, walking speed, participation and quality of life.Treadmill and overground walking protocols consisting of ≥30 min sessions conducted at least 3 days per week for about 8 weeks are beneficial for improving motor impairments, activity limitations, participation, and quality of life in patient with chronic stroke. In vivo treatment of hydrophobic substances requires the use of organic solvents, which are often toxic. Consequently, polyethylene glycols (PEGs), which are considered as nontoxic, have been widely used for many years in chemistry and biology. We used PEG 200, which was administrated by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection once a week to mice. After 4 months of injections, at the dose of 1.67 mL/kg, a surprising increase in expression of GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein) and IBA1 (ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1), glial markers of astrocytes and microglia respectively, was observed in the mice's hippocampus. These results were associated with a dramatic increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β) expression, all together suggesting an inflammatory process. It is important to communicate these results to the scientific community to provide awareness of this potential effect when PEG 200 is used under similar conditions as a vehicle in mice.Recent studies have shown that the reduction of sperm count is associated with sleep behaviors, including restricted/excessive sleep duration, late sleep time midpoint, and shift of sleep midpoint time (social jetlag). Chronotype is suggested to regulate sleep behaviors; however, the relationship between chronotype and human sperm count is unknown. The relationship between sleep behaviors and human sperm count, when sleep behaviors as well as chronotype are controlled is also unclear. We performed a path analysis of the data obtained from 667 Chinese men recruited into the MARHCS (Male Reproductive Health in Chongqing College Students) study. Chronotype, sleep duration, sleep time midpoint, and social jetlag were estimated by the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire. Sperm count was measured by computer-aided sperm analysis. The comprehensive relationship between chronotype, all sleep behaviors, and sperm count was tested by path analysis, in which the standardized residual of sperm count was used for adjustment of chronotype, the sleep-duration-related decrease of sperm count was separately estimated to be 16.3%, 12.8%, and 11.6%, while the social-jetlag-related decrease of sperm count was estimated to be 9.3%, 12.8%, and 19.2%. The total effect of sleep behaviors on sperm count was estimated to be 25.7%, 25.6%, and 30.7%, with an average of 27.4% for men of different chronotypes. The present study showed that men of earlier chronotype were prone to restricted/excessive sleep duration, while men of later chronotype were prone to social jetlag, both of which correlated with reduced sperm count, suggesting that chronotype may modulate the sleep behaviors and exert dual effects on sperm count via different sleep behaviors, leading to a ubiquitous sperm decline. Men of different chronotypes should take care to avoid different types of improper sleep behaviors, so as to prevent such deleterious effect on sperm count.
