NAC pretreatment significantly prevented intracellular Cd2+ accumulation in the Cd-exposed macrophages. Inhibitory effects of NAC on Cd-induced ROS accumulation and mitochondrial injury on chicken macrophages were confirmed in HD-11 macrophage cell line. In addition, NAC pretreatment promoted the phagocytic activity of Cd-exposed chicken peritoneal macrophages, and significantly inhibited expression of pro-inflammatory factors (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) in both Cd-exposed macrophages and Cd-treated cells in response to LPS stimuli. In conclusion, the present study firstly demonstrated the antagonistic effect of NAC against Cd-caused damage and abnormal immune response on chicken peritoneal macrophages. Protective effect of NAC on chicken macrophages was highly related to its suppression on Cd-induced ROS overproduction, pro-inflammatory reaction and intracellular Cd2+ accumulation.Seaweed is an inherently important entity in marine ecosystems. It is not only consumed by aquatic animals but also improves environmental quality in the mariculture. Seaweed is also part of the diet of human beings. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the antagonism of selenium (Se)-enriched Gracilaria lemaneiformis against heavy metals, specifically, the potential of dietary Se-enriched Gracilaria to protect against heavy metal toxicity in rabbitfish (Siganus oramin). Growth rate, heavy metal (Se, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn and Cr) concentrations, malondialdehyde (MDA), metallothionein (MT), and the activity of the antioxidants, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were all assessed. The results showed that the total organic and inorganic Se concentration for the 250 mg L-1 Se-enriched Gracilaria was significantly higher than those of the 50 and 10 mg L-1 treatments after 3 days of enrichment. The mean total Se concentrations in Gracilaria were 42.5 μg g-1 in the 250 50 mg L-1 Se treatment of Gracilaria was deemed to be the optimum concentration to promote growth of rabbitfish. Therefore, the obtained results suggest Se-enriched Gracilaria can antagonize heavy metal toxicity, and is an advisable Se supplement to improve the edible safety of cultured animals.Disinfectant quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) have diverse uses in a variety of consumer and commercial products, particularly cleaning products. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have become a primary tool to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus on surfaces. Disinfectant Quats have very low vapor pressure, and following the use phase of the products in which they are found, disposal is typically "down-the-drain" to wastewater treatment systems. Consequently, the potential for the greatest environmental effect is to the aquatic environment, from treated effluent, and potentially to soils, which might be amended with wastewater biosolids. Among the earliest used and still common disinfectant Quats are the alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (ADBAC) compounds and the dialkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) compounds. They are cationic surfactants often found in consumer and commercial surface cleaners. Because of their biocidal properties, disinfectant Quats are heavily regulated for humano wastewater biosolids, sediment, and soil. As a result, disinfectant Quats are largely removed during wastewater treatment, and those residues discharged in treated effluent are likely to rapidly bind to suspended solids or sediments, thus mitigating their toxicity.Palygorskite is a mineral widely applied for the removal of potentially toxic trace elements from the environment. This study aimed to identify the influence of pH (3, 4, 5, and 6) and humic acid (200 mg L-1) addition on the adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) ions by the microparticles and nanoparticles of palygorskite. Therefore, the mineral was prepared as the micron- and nano-sized particles saturated with Ba2+ ions, and finally used in adsorption experiments. The results indicated that regardless of the mineral size, Cr(VI) adsorption was enhanced by increasing the contact time from 5 to 2880 min and the equilibrium conditions achieved after 1440 min from the beginning of experiments. BAY 1000394 With increasing the pH values from 3 to 6, the adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI) decreased significantly, and the highest rate of removal (64%) was found at pH = 3. The pseudo-second-order model best described the kinetics of Cr(VI) adsorption onto both micro- and nanoparticles of palygorskite. Also, the experimental the pH of the aqueous matrix.
The opioid epidemic continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality. Although there are effective medications for opioid use disorder (OUD), a minority of patients receive these treatments. OUD is common among patients hospitalized for traumatic injury and hospitalization could be an opportunity to initiate medications and link to ongoing buprenorphine care.
This retrospective cohort study based on electronic health record review included patients who were (1) hospitalized between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019, (2) age ≥18 years, (3) seen by an Addiction Medicine Consult Service, and (4) initiated on buprenorphine with plans for continuation post-discharge. Descriptive statistics identified differences between trauma and non-trauma groups and regression analysis identified predictors of 30 day buprenorphine follow up.
Of 197 eligible patients, 60 (30.5 %) were hospitalized for traumatic injuries. Compared to non-trauma patients, trauma patients were younger, more likely to be employed, more likely to report using cannabis and tobacco, less likely to have recently injected drugs, and hospitalized longer. Among patients with follow-up data available (n = 147), 63.2 % of trauma patients were seen within 30 days, compared to 48.2 % of non-trauma patients (p = 0.16). There were no significant differences between the two groups with regards to urine drug test results or acute care utilization in the follow-up period.
Among hospitalized patients with OUD who initiate buprenorphine, those who were hospitalized for trauma were at least as likely to link to out-patient treatment. Trauma admissions represent an important opportunity for diagnosing and linking patients with OUD to buprenorphine treatment.
