These processes depict significant reduction in harmful effect (separation efficiency up to 62.1%) by showing the decrement in the suspended solids and droplets in the smoke due to the adsorption on the active sites of adsorbents. In case of combined modification, the achieved separation efficiency is 66.51%. For the experimentation, an experimental setup fitted with artificial lungs was used.In Diyar-Al-Hujjej irrigated area, the aquifer's over-exploitation, sea intrusion, and abandonment of irrigated areas and wells took place. A yield decrease for all crops was observed. Average aquifer water electrical conductivity (EC) jumps from 4 to 6.6 dS/m between 1969 and 2017. A fresh surface water transfer over more than 100 km was launched in 1998 to safeguard this irrigated area but this fresh water supply is not stable; it varies from 1 year to another (about 1,900,000 m3 in 2015 and only 60.000 m3 in 2018) while annual crop water requirement of the perimeter is about 2,500,000 m3. An adaptation by farmers to this new situation of saline and water stress was observed. BX-795 research buy The follow-up surveys of the farmer's practices showed that (i) new crops with high added value grown during the rainy season were introduced in association with dry season crops (strawberry-pepper association), (ii) rainfed crops, fallow, and water blending are common practices; and (iii) growing of rainy season crops in the aim to reduce water supply. The instability of fresh surface water volume transferred constitutes the main threat for this perimeter. The use of aquifer salt water must be stopped; it is the cause of the large quantities of salts supplied (over 13,000 kg/ha) and also of the low annual net income achieved. Net revenue was less than 2000 US $/ha under salt water and reached even 8000 US $/ha when sufficient surface water is available. An agrarian reform policy must be applied for this perimeter; only crops whose water requirements are partially met by rain should be grown. The introduction of another more sustainable water source should be initiated (as desalination) even at the private farm level. In this study, the polypyrrole (PPy) samples doped with Cl- (PPy-Cl), SO42- (PPy-SO4) and SO42-+Cl- (PPy-SO4+Cl) were synthesized by chemical polymerization for the adsorptive removal of fluoride ion from water. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared PPy samples were characterized by FT-IR, BET, SEM, XPS, and zeta potential. The adsorption experiments revealed that the PPy-Cl exhibited faster kinetics and higher adsorption capacity (13.98 mg/g), more than 4 times that of PPy-SO4 (3.08 mg/g) and PPy-SO4+Cl (3.17 mg/g). The kinetics of the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherm data fitted well to the Langmuir model. FT-IR, EDX, and XPS tests for PPy samples before and after fluoride adsorption demonstrated that anion exchange between F- and Cl- or SO42- was the prior mechanism for fluoride ion removal from water. Cl- was more favorable than SO42- in the ion exchange with F-. Meanwhile, the Cl- or SO42- exchanged with F- was mainly bound to the active nitrogen that accounts for 6% of the total nitrogen in PPy molecular matrix. Further study of zeta potential and pH influence experiment demonstrated the electrostatic interaction is auxiliary interaction for the fluoride removal by doped PPy samples.Mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation in fish poses severe threats to the food safety and human health. This study was conducted to assess Hg bioaccumulation in fish (n = 24) and scalp hair (n = 77) of the fishing communities at up- and downstream of the river Swat, Pakistan. The mean Hg concentration in upstream fish Salmo trutta fario (Brown trout) and Schizothorax plagiostomus (Swati fish) species was 34.7±18 μg kg-1 and 29.4±15 μg kg-1, respectively. The mean Hg concentration in downstream Swati fish, Crossocheilus diplochilus (Spena deqa), and Garra gotyla (Tora deqa) was 65±21 μg kg-1, 123±33 μg kg-1, and 326±53 μg Kg-1, respectively. The mean Hg concentration in scalp hair of the up- and downstream fishing communities was 658±125 μg kg-1 and 3969±791 μg kg-1, respectively. Independent T-test showed significant difference (p less then 0.001) in the mean Hg concentration in scalp hair of the up- and downstream communities. The most prevalent health problems found in the fishing community were muscle pain, headache, visual impairment, arterial blood pressure, anemia, and kidney dysfunction. Multiple linear regression indicated that daily and weekly consumption of the fish significantly increase Hg accumulation in human scalp hair. Regular consumption of fruits and cruciferous and leafy vegetables were found to reduce Hg toxicity in the population. Further studies are recommended to identify the sources of Hg and welfare impact of fish contamination on the fishing community of river Swat.
Studies on age differences in emotional states during the COVID-19 pandemic showed that older adults experienced greater emotional wellbeing compared to younger adults. We hypothesized these age differences to be related to the perception of closeness to family/friends or the engagement in daily activities during the pandemic.
To investigate age differences in positive and negative emotional experiences and whether the perception of closeness to family/friends and the engagement in daily activities during pandemic explained such age-related differences.
Through a cross-sectional study, 1,457 adults aged 18-87years old completed an online survey assessing positive and negative emotional experiences, the perception of more closeness to family/friends, and daily activities that participants started/re-started during the pandemic.
Increasing age was associated with more positive and less negative emotional experiences. Age differences in positive emotional experience were explained by the perception of more closeness to friends and not by the engagement in daily activities. For negative emotional experience age, differences remained significant even after accounting for the perception of closeness to family/friends and engagements in daily activities.
Older adults' greater overall level of positive emotional experience was explained by their greater perception of more closeness to friends. We speculate that social closeness provides a coping mechanism to increase emotional wellbeing employed especially in older adults.
Our findings reinforce the link between perceived social closeness and emotional wellbeing especially in older adults. To cope with stressful situation, it is important to encourage older adults to increase the closeness to their social network.
