It was found that prenatal exposure to human-relevant doses of PrP exacerbated ovarian oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis, which promoted follicular atresia by activating the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. To compensate, the depletion of primordial follicles was also accelerated by activating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in PrP-exposed mice. Moreover, PrP induced hypermethylation of CpG sites in the promoter region of Cyp11a1 (a 17.16-64.28% increase) partly led to the disrupted steroidogenesis, and the altered methylation levels of imprinted genes H19 and Peg3 may also contribute to the phenotypes observed. These remarkable findings highlight the embryonic origin of ovarian aging and suggest that a reduced use of PrP during pregnancy should be advocated.Understanding the distribution and persistence of the fumigant dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) under different soil conditions would contribute to a more environmentally sustainable use of this gas. We determined the effects of soil type, soil moisture content and soil organic amendment rate on DMDS distribution and persistency using soil columns in the laboratory. The peak concentrations of DMDS at 60 cm soil depth in sandy loam soil, black soil and red loam soil were 1.9 μg cm-3, 0.77 μg cm-3, 0.22 μg cm-3, respectively. The total soil residues of DMDS in sandy loam soil, black soil and red loam soil were 0.4, 1.3 and 1.3%, respectively. The peak concentrations of DMDS at 60 cm soil depth and the total soil residues of DMDS applied decreased from 3.2 μg cm-3 to 0.9 μg cm-3 and 3.3 to 0.5% when soil moisture content increased from 6 to 18%, respectively. Incremental increases (0-5%) in organic amendment rates decreased DMDS distribution through the soils and increased soil residues. Wait periods were required of 7, 21 and 21 days after polyethylene (PE) film was removed to reduce residues sufficiently for cucumber seed germination in sandy loam soil, black soil and red loam soil with 12% moisture content and 0% organic amendment rate, respectively. However, no wait period was required for successful cucumber seed germination in sandy loam soils (Beijing) with 6, 12 or 18% moisture content or organic amendment rates of 1 or 5%, respectively, but in commercial practice 7 days delay would be prudent. Our results indicated that soil type, soil moisture content and organic amendment rates significantly affected DMDS distribution, persistency and residues in soil. Those factors should be taken into consideration by farmers when determining the appropriate dose of DMDS that will control soil pests and diseases in commercially-produced crops.Methane emitted by insects is considered to be an important source of atmospheric methane. Here we report the stimulation of methane emission in the cockroach Periplaneta americana and termite Coptotermes chaohuensis, insects with abundant methanogens, by neonicotinoids, insecticides widely used to control insect pests. Cycloxaprid (CYC) and imidacloprid (IMI) caused foregut expansion in P. americana, and increased the methane emission. Antibiotics mostly eliminated the effects. In P. americana guts, hydrogen levels increased and pH values decreased, which could be significantly explained by the gut bacterium community change. The proportion of several bacterium genera increased in guts following CYC treatment, and two genera from four could generate hydrogen. Hydrogen is a central intermediate in methanogenesis. All increased methanogens in both foregut and hindgut used hydrogen as electron donor to produce methane. Besides, the up-regulation of mcrA, encoding the enzyme for the final step of methanogenesis suggested the enhanced methane production ability in present methanogens. In the termite, hydrogen levels in gut and methane emission also significantly increased after neonicotinoid treatment, which was similar to the results in P. americana. In summary, neonicotinoids changed bacterium community in P. americana gut to generate more hydrogen, which then stimulated gut methanogens to produce and emit more methane. The finding raised a new concern over neonicotinoid applications, and might be a potential environmental risk associated with atmospheric methane.Understanding the underlying mechanisms of community assembly is a major challenge in microbial ecology, particularly in communities composed of diverse organisms with different ecological characteristics. However, very little is known about the effects of marine compartments in shaping marine planktonic communities; primarily, how they are related to organism types and environmental variables. selleck compound In this study, we used multiple statistical methods to explore the mechanisms driving phytoplankton and zooplankton metacommunity dynamics at the regional scale in the Bohai Sea, China. Clear geographic patterns were observed in both phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. Zooplankton showed a stronger distance-decay of similarity than phytoplankton, which had greater community differences between locations with further distances. Our analyses indicated that the zooplankton communities were primarily governed by species sorting versus dispersal limitation than the phytoplankton communities. Furthermore, we detected that zooplankton exhibited wider habitat niche breadths and dispersal abilities than phytoplankton. Our findings also showed that environmental pollution affected high trophic organisms via food webs; the presence of heavy metals in the Bohai Sea altered the abundance of some phytoplankton, and thus modified the zooplankton that feed on them.Interactive effects of inorganic arsenic (As) species and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on their uptake, accumulation and translocation in the hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L. (P. vittata) were studied hydroponically. The presence of PAHs hindered As uptake and acropetal translocation by P. vittata, decreasing As concentrations by 29.8%-54.5% in pinnae, regardless of the initial As speciation. The inhibitive effect of PAHs was 1.6-8.7 times greater for arsenite [As(III)] than for arsenate [As(V)]. Similarly, inorganic As inhibited the uptake of fluorene (FLU) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) by P. vittata roots by 0.4%-21.7% and by 33.1%-69.7%, respectively. Interestingly, coexposure to As and PAHs slightly enhanced the translocation of PAHs by P. vittata with their concentrations increased 0.3 to 0.8 times in shoots, except for the As(III)+BaP treatment. The antagonistic interaction between As and PAHs uptake is likely caused by competitive inhibition or oxidative stress injury. By using synchrotron radiation micro X-ray fluorescence imaging, high concentrations of As were found distributed throughout the microstructures far from main vein of the pinnae when coexposed with PAHs, the opposite of what was observed with exposure to As only.
