We first demonstrate that low-ranking teams commit more fouls than they receive in top-tier soccer, ice hockey, and basketball men's leagues. We replicate this effect in the laboratory, showing that male participants deliver louder sound blasts to a rival when placed in a low-status position. Using neuroimaging, we characterize brain activity patterns that encode competitive status as well as those that facilitate status-dependent aggression in healthy young men. These analyses reveal three key findings. First, anterior hippocampus and striatum contain multivariate representations of competitive status. Second, interindividual differences in status-dependent aggression are linked with a sharper status differentiation in the striatum and with greater reactivity to status-enhancing victories in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex. Third, activity in ventromedial, ventrolateral, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is associated with trial-wise increases in status-dependent aggressive behavior. Taken together, our results run counter to narratives glorifying aggression in competitive situations. Rather, we show that those in the lower ranks of skill-based hierarchies are more likely to behave aggressively and identify the potential neural basis of this phenomenon.
Nanofiber wound dressings remain the domain of in vitro studies. The purpose of our study was to verify the benefits of chitosan (CTS) and polylactide (PLA)-based nanofiber wound dressings on a porcine model of a naturally contaminated standardized wound and compare them with the conventional dressings, i.e., gauze and Inadine.
The study group included 32 pigs randomized into four homogeneous groups according to the wound dressing type. selleck Standardized wounds were created on their backs, and wound dressings were regularly changed. We evaluated difficulty of handling individual dressing materials and macroscopic appearance of the wounds. Wound swabs were taken for bacteriological examination. Blood samples were obtained to determine blood count values and serum levels of acute phase proteins (serum amyloid A, C-reactive protein, and haptoglobin). The crucial point of the study was histological analysis. Microscopic evaluation was focused on the defect depth and tissue reactions, including formation of the fibsitive effect of nanofiber wound dressings on acceleration of individual phases of the healing process. Nanofiber wound dressings have a potential to become in future part of the common wound care practice.The present study aimed to investigate whether adult patients with ADHD show deficits in social cognition, and to identify the structural neural correlates of social cognitive skills in ADHD. 26 adult patients with ADHD and 26 matched healthy control participants performed the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition and underwent a structural MRI scan. We compared theory of mind (ToM) performance between ADHD patients and healthy controls. Using voxel-based morphometry, we further compared gray matter volumes in regions that are critical for social cognition between the two groups and examined whether ToM performance was correlated with brain morphometry measures. We did not observe any between-group differences in ToM abilities or regional gray matter volumes. Across both groups, performance on affective aspects of ToM correlated positively with gray matter volumes in the medial part of the superior frontal gyri, which is typically involved in social cognition. This study is the first to relate brain structure to social cognitive abilities in adult patients with ADHD. Though our sample was small and heterogeneous, with half of the patients showing mild to moderate psychiatric comorbidities, our results may encourage longitudinal studies that relate social cognitive development in childhood and adolescence to brain maturation of ADHD patients.Scalp avulsion is a rare trauma in the developed world but is a common injury in countries with poorly established infrastructure and safety regulations. This case reports the long-term sequelae of this injury, observed while conducting a humanitarian mission, and discusses immediate actions for management in an acute setting. We aim to increase awareness about this injury, its risk factors, and treatment options to better prepare clinicians in the developed world to provide care for this condition in the austere environment, which may include not only chronic pain, functional, and aesthetic concerns, but also a psychological impact that persists years after the initial injury.
There is no standard treatment for patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas who progress after bevacizumab treatment. We evaluated the outcomes of re-irradiation combined with bevacizumab for patients refractory to bevacizumab.
Between January 2015 and September 2019, patients with progression after bevacizumab treatment were treated with re-irradiation combined with bevacizumab (25Gy in five fractions).
Fourteen patients [glioblastoma, isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild type (N=6), glioblastoma, IDH mutant (N=4), anaplastic astrocytoma, IDH wild type (N=1), anaplastic astrocytoma, IDH mutant (N=1), glioblastoma, not otherwise specified (N=1) and radiologically diagnosed brainstem glioma (N=1)] were included in this study. The median survival and progression-free survival times after re-irradiation combined with bevacizumab were 6.1 and 3.8months, respectively. The 6-month survival and progression-free survival rates were 54.5 and 15.7%, respectively. Patients with a Karnofsky performance status of ≥70 tended to have longer median survival time (9.
