Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of life-long neurodevelopmental disorders affecting 1.5% of the general population. The present study aimed to evaluate the psychiatric history of a group of adults who received the first diagnosis of ASD in two Italian university centers. Diagnoses of ASD were confirmed by a team of psychiatrists with wide expertise in the field, after the administration of standardized tools (i.e., ADOS-2, ADI-R). The sample comprised 161 participants, of which 114 (79.5%) were males. The median age of diagnosis was 23 years (range 18-55), with a median IQ of 100 (range 30-145). The first evaluation by a mental health professional was performed at a median age of 13 years, with a gap of 11 years between the first evaluation and the diagnosis of ASD. 33.5% of participants had never received a psychiatric diagnosis, while the rest of the sample had received one or more diagnoses different from ASD. The most common past diagnoses were intellectual disability, psychoses, personality disorders, and depression. Sex differences were detected in the age of diagnosis and ADOS-2 scores. Our results provide important information for both child and adult psychiatrists. Given the prevalence of autism and the high rates of co-occurrent psychiatric conditions, it is important for clinicians to consider ASD in the differential diagnostic process.
Sustainability and safety aspects of plant cell cultures as food are presented. CGS 21680 nmr Applicability of dairy side streams as carbon source and use of natural growth enhancers in cultivation are shown. Biotechnologically produced cellular products are currently emerging to replace and add into the portfolio of agriculturally derived commodities. Plant cell cultures used for food could supplement current food production. However, still many aspects need to be resolved before this new food concept can enter the market. Issues related to sustainability and safety for human consumption are relevant for both consumers and regulators. In this study, two plant cell cultures, deriving from arctic bramble (Rubus arcticus) and birch (Betula pendula), were cultivated using lactose-rich dairy side streams as alternative carbon sources to replace sucrose. Biomasses were comparable to those of original plant cell culture media when up to 83% and 75% of the original sucrose was replaced by these side streams for arctic bramble abilberry fruit.
Genome-wide identification, classification, functional characterization and expression analysis of Auxin Responsive Factor (ARF) gene family in wheat reveal their attributes and role during leaf rust infection. Auxins are important plant growth regulators that also impact plant-pathogen interaction. Auxin responsive factors (ARF) are plant specific transcription factors that control responses to auxins. Whole genome investigation of ARF gene family is limited in allohexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Comprehensive study of this gene family was carried out by employing the currently available reference genome sequence of wheat. In total, 27 ARF genes were identified and located on the wheat genome as well as were positioned on wheat chromosome arms. Additionally, examination of the predicted genes unveiled a decent degree of relatedness within and among the phylogenetic clades. Leaf rust, caused by the obligate biotrophic fungal pathogen Puccinia triticina, is responsible for drastic loss of wheat crop nteraction. Highest expression of ARF genes were observed at 12 hpi that was maintained up to 72 hpi during incompatible interaction, whereas the high expression levels receded at 48 hpi during compatible interactions. Few of the identified ARF genes were likely to be post-transcriptionally regulated by microRNAs. Many light and stress responsive elements were detected in the promoter regions of ARF genes. Microsynteny analysis showed the conservation of ARF genes within the members of the Poaceae family. This study provides fundamental details for understanding the different types of ARF genes in wheat and there putative roles during leaf rust-wheat interaction.Following up-to-date initiatives of the Stockholm Convention, its global monitoring plan, and the International Cooperative Programme on Natural Vegetation and Crops (ICP Vegetation 2015) under the convention on long-range transboundary air pollution, this study examined 17 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and seven organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the moss Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. and topsoil sampled across Serbia. In the topsoil, OCPs ranged from 0.0158 to 9.6804 ng g-1 while concentrations of individual PCB congeners were in the range between 0.0185 and 0.3107 ng g-1. The levels of OCPs and PCBs in the moss H. cupressiforme ranged from 2.7785 to 23.9501 ng g-1, and from 0.4325 to 15.8013 ng g-1, respectively. POP relationships between topsoil and moss investigated by fugacity model equations indicated that the moss POP enrichment was a result of atmospheric long-range transport rather than secondary reemissions from soil. The use of microorganisms capable of mediating the bioprecipitation process can be an important application in the self-healing processes of cement specimens. Thus, the present study identified and evaluated five Bacillus strains for potential application in the protocol of self-healing via bioprecipitation. Cell growth, enzyme production, and kinetic parameters conditions were evaluated during the fermentation process. Based on the analysis of 16S rDNA in conjunction with biochemical testing, results demonstrate that the strains are either Bacillus cereus or Bacillus thuringiensis. Strategically it was found that the addition of glycerol to fermentative medium was essential to increase the bacterial concentration (≈ 4.2 × 107 cells mL-1) and production of the enzyme urease (≈ 3.623,2 U.mL-1). The addition of this medium after 40 days of fermentation promoted the self-healing of cracks and increased compressive strength in ≈ 14.2% of the cementitious specimens; therefore, increasing the sustainability and engineering properties of cement-based materials.A review of the applicability of electron beam water radiolysis for sewage sludge treatment is presented. Electron beam treatment has been proven to be a successful approach to the disinfection of both wastewater and sewage sludge. Nevertheless, before 2000, there were concerns about the perceived high capital costs of the accelerator and with public acceptance of the usage of radiation for water treatment purposes. Nowadays, with increased knowledge and technological development, it may be not only possible but also desirable to use electron beam technology for risk-free sewage sludge treatment, disposal and bio-friendly fertiliser production. Despite the developing interest in this method, there has been no attempt to perform a review of the pertinent literature relating to this technology. It appears that understanding of the mechanism and primary parameters of disinfection is key to optimising the process. This paper aims to reliably characterise the sewage sludge electron beam treatment process to elucidate its major issues and make recommendations for further development and research.
