Overall, the inclusion of ensiled OC in cow diets for a 4-wk period improved, beneficially for human health, the lipid profile of bovine milk and Halloumi cheese produced without adversely affecting milk yield and composition or the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism of mammary and adipose tissues in cows.Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is endemic in many parts of the world, and multiple countries have implemented surveillance activities for disease control or eradication. In such control programs, the disease-free status can be compromised by factors that pose risks for introduction or persistence of the virus. The aim of the present study was to gain a comprehensive overview of possible risk factors for BVDV infection in cattle herds in Europe and to assess their importance. Papers that considered risk factors for BVDV infection in cattle were identified through a systematic search. Further selection of papers eligible for quantitative analysis was performed using a predefined checklist, including (1) appropriate region (i.e., studies performed in Europe), (2) representativeness of the study population, (3) quality of statistical analysis, and (4) availability of sufficient quantitative data. In total, 18 observational studies were selected. Data were analyzed by a random-effects meta-analysis to obtain pf BVDV control programs.The electrostatic complexation of protein and polysaccharide and the functional properties of the complexes are significantly affected by the structure of protein aggregates and are important in the development of new food ingredients. In this work, natural globular β-lactoglobulin (NGBLG), β-lactoglobulin nanoparticles (BLGNP), and β-lactoglobulin fibrils (BLGF) were prepared and complexed with κ-carrageenan (κ-car). Phase diagrams of the NGBLG-, BLGNP-, and BLGF-κ-car systems were established and divided into 4 regions mixed soluble polymers (I), intramolecular soluble complex (II), intermolecular soluble complex (III), and intermolecular insoluble complex (IV). Aggregation shifted the boundaries of regions III and IV of BLGF- or BLGNP-κ-car to lower pH and higher protein aggregates/κ-car weight ratio (r), especially for BLGF-κ-car. The emulsifying and foaming properties of the 3 mixed systems were investigated in regions I and II. Complexes in region II had significantly better emulsifying properties than the corresponding mixtures in region I and the pure protein aggregates. Interestingly, phase separation resulted in different effects on the foaming properties of the 3 BLG-κ-car complexes, in which BLGF-κ-car complexation in region II decreased the foaming properties in region I but the complexation of NGBLG-κ-car and BLGNP-κ-car in region II increased the foaming properties. The BLGF-κ-car complex in regions I and II provided the best emulsifying and foaming properties. Interfacial data both on oil-water and air-water interfaces overall explained the emulsifying and foaming properties of the complexes.The effects of source of corn silage and trace mineral on rumen fermentation, turnover, and particle passage rates were evaluated with 8 ruminally cannulated Holstein cows averaging 83 (standard error = 5) days in milk in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments and 28-d periods. The diets consisted (dry basis) of 55% conventional (CON) or brown midrib-3 (BM3) corn silage, 2% chopped wheat straw, and 43% grain mix with either sulfate (STM) or hydroxy (HTM) source of Cu, Zn, and Mn trace minerals. The targeted supplemental amount of Cu, Zn, and Mn was 194, 1,657, and 687 mg/d, respectively. The dietary treatments were (1) CON-STM, (2) CON-HTM, (3) BM3-STM, and (4) BM3-HTM. Dietary nutrient composition of BM3 diets averaged 32.1% amylase neutral detergent fiber on an organic matter basis (aNDFom) and 6.9% undigested neutral detergent fiber at 240 h of in vitro fermentation (uNDF240om; % of dry matter), and CON diets averaged 36.2% aNDFom and 8.6% uNDF240om (% of drively). Cows fed the BM3 diets had a faster passage rate of small and medium corn silage neutral detergent fiber particles than cows fed the CON diets (5.73 vs. 5.37%/h and 4.74 vs. 4.31%/h, respectively). We observed a corn silage by source of trace mineral interaction on organic matter and uNDF240om rumen pool size and organic matter turnover. Overall, source of corn silage had a pronounced influence on rumen dynamics presumably related to greater in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility and lower uNDF240om content of BM3 corn silage that allowed for faster turnover of indigestible neutral detergent fiber and greater passage rate of corn silage particles. In contrast, the source of trace mineral had much less significant effects on rumen fermentation, turnover, and particle passage rates. Corn silage-based diets intended to enhance rumen fiber fermentation, turnover, and passage are more affected by source and digestibility of neutral detergent fiber than source of dietary trace minerals.The contribution of colostrum to passive immunity transfer and intestinal protection is well known; however, the effects of colostrum intake on the expression of antimicrobial peptides (AP) and Fc receptors in the intestine of neonatal calves are unclear. Our aim was to investigate changes in the expression of AP and Fc receptor in the small intestine of calves in the first 36 h postpartum. Twenty-four Holstein bull calves were used in this study, of which 18 calves were administered 3.2 L of pooled colostrum for each calf per meal via an esophageal tube. Calves were slaughtered at 8 h (1 meal at 1-2 h), 24 h (2 meals at 1-2 h and 10-12 h), and 36 h (3 meals at 1-2 h, 10-12 h, and 22-24 h) postpartum. The remaining 6 calves without any milk administration were slaughtered at 2 h postpartum. S3I201 Samples of blood and jejunum digesta were collected to determine immunoglobulin concentration using ELISA. Samples of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum tissues after slaughter were collected to determine AP and Fc receptor expression using quantitative real-time PCR.
