We summarized the results of preclinical and clinical studies dealing with the introduction of epithelial and mesenchymal stem cells of the afterbirth origin to the liver failure therapy. It was concluded that the use of native afterbirth epithelial and mesenchymal cells in the treatment of liver failure could support liver function and regeneration. This effect would be enhanced by the use of hepatocyte-like cells obtained from placental and/or umbilical stem cells. The insula, a cortical region that is thought to play a central role in this reward circuitry, has been implicated in the maintenance of nicotine addiction. However, it remains largely unclear about the white matter (WM) microstructural alterations of insula in nicotine addiction and whether the WM alterations of insula could predict smoking cessation outcomes. In this study, 58 male nicotine-dependent smokers and 34 matched male nonsmoking controls were recruited. After a 12-week smoking cessation treatment with varenicline, 38 smokers relapsed, and 20 did not relapse. Diffusion tensor imaging and probabilistic tractography were used to investigate the differences of WM tracts of insula between smokers and nonsmokers. Relative to nonsmokers, in the left hemisphere, smokers showed lower fractional anisotropy (FA) in the fiber tracts of anterior insula cortex-to-nucleus accumbens and posterior insula cortex-to-nucleus accumbens; in the right hemisphere, smokers showed higher FA, and lower axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD), and mean diffusivity (MD) in the fiber tracts of anterior insula cortex-to-medial orbitofrontal cortex, posterior insula cortex-to-medial orbitofrontal cortex, and posterior insula cortex-to-nucleus accumbens. However, there were no differences of WM diffusion properties between relapsers and nonrelapsers. This study is the first using probabilistic tractography to exclusively clarify the precise roles of insular WM tracts in smokers, which may provide new insights into the underlying neurobiology of nicotine addiction.Fascioliasis is an important neglected tropical disease that causes severe injury to the bile ducts and liver. Therefore, a rapid and accurate method for detection of Fasciola hepatica infection plays a vital role in early treatment. Currently, the diagnosis of fascioliasis is mainly conducted via serological tests using the excretory/secretory (E/S) products, which might cross-react with antigens from other helminth parasitic diseases. Hence, the development of serodiagnosis test using recombinant antigens may contribute to differentiate fascioliasis from other helminth infections. In the past 20 years, many attempts have been made to exert different F. hepatica recombinant antigens to obtain a well-established standard assay with high accuracy. In this review, we address recent studies that refer to the development of serodiagnosis tests for diagnosis of human fascioliasis based on the candidate recombinant antigens produced by different approaches. Meanwhile, in the present review, some main factors have been highlighted to improve the accuracy of diagnostic tests such as the effect of refolding methods to recover antigens' tertiary structure as well as applying a mixture of recombinant antigens with the highest sensitivity and specificity to improve the accuracy of diagnostic tests.
This study was aimed at investigating metabolic changes in breast cancer on dual-time-point
F-FDG PET/CT imaging (DTPI) according to primary tumor uptake and determining whether this technique is affected by background parenchymal enhancement (BPE).
A total of 189 patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer who underwent DTPI examination were retrospectively evaluated. DTPI was performed using a standard FDG/PET protocol followed by delayed image acquisition at 120min after injection. Patients were divided into two groups according to primary tumor uptake as breast cancer with low maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) (< 2.5) and high SUVmax (≥ 2.5). The maximal SUV of the primary breast tumor (T-SUVmax), contralateral breast parenchyma uptake (B-SUVmax) according to different BPE grades, tumor to background ratio (T/B-SUVmax), and their percentage changes between early and delayed images (retention index, RI) were calculated.
For primary tumor uptake, tumors with high SUV had a significant increareast lesions in regions with marked BPE on MRI.
Breast cancer with low SUV undergoes no significant change in SUV on DTPI; however, washing of background parenchymal activity was evident over time, resulting in significantly increased tumor contrast in delayed images, which leads to increased sensitivity. Breast parenchymal washout was more significant with increased BPE level. Therefore, DTPI is expected to be more useful for evaluating breast lesions in regions with marked BPE on MRI.The original version of this article unfortunately contained a mistake. The Wumeng semi-fine wool sheep is vital to the production system in Southwest China. To study the effects of nano-selenium (Nano-Se) poisoning in the Wumeng semi-fine wool sheep, poisoning model was established. A total of 20 animals with an average initial body weight (BW) of 35.57 ± 3.31 kg were used in this study. After 1-week-long acclimatization period, all animals were randomly divided into two groups (1) control, with no any treatment; (2) Nano-Se group, orally administered 5 mg Nano-Se (BW/kg/day). There were 10 replications/group and one sheep/replication. The experiment lasted for 30 days. Compared with the control, hemoglobin, erythrocyte count, and packed cell volume in Nano-Se group markedly decreased (P less then 0.01), and the activities of serum lactate dehydrogenase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, cereal third transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase in Nano-Se group significantly increased (P less then 0.01). T3 and FT3 in serum in Nano-Se group were greatly lower than those in the control (P less then 0.01). Contents of T4, FT4, and TSH in serum in Nano-Se group were extremely higher than those in the control (P less then 0.01). Selnoflast Levels of IgG, IgM, IgA, interleukin 2 (IL-2), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in Nano-Se group were much lower than those of the control (P less then 0.01), but levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) were greatly higher than those in the control (P less then 0.01). Compared with the control, serum superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxide, total antioxidant capacity, and catalase from Nano-Se group extremely decreased (P less then 0.01), and content of serum malondialdehyde in Nano-Se group markedly increased (P less then 0.01). The current results indicated that the blood parameters in the Wumeng semi-fine wool sheep were affected by Nano-Se poisoning, and the immune function and antioxidant capacity were greatly reduced too.
