Objective Vertebral bone marrow composition has been extensively studied in the past and shown potential as imaging biomarker for osteoporosis, hematopoietic, and metabolic disorders. However, beyond quantitative assessment of bone marrow fat, little is known about its heterogeneity. Therefore, we investigated bone marrow heterogeneity of the lumbar spine using texture analysis of chemical-shift-encoding (CSE-MRI) based proton density fat fraction (PDFF) maps and its association with age, sex, and anatomical location. Methods One hundred and fifty-six healthy subjects were scanned (age range 20-29 years, 12/30 males/females; 30-39, 15/9; 40-49, 5/13; 50-59, 9/27; ≥60 9/27). A sagittal 8-echo 3D spoiled-gradient-echo sequence at 3T was used for CSE-MRI-based water-fat separation at the lumbar spine. Manual segmentation of vertebral bodies L1-4 was performed. Mean PDFF and texture features (global variance, skewness, kurtosis; second-order energy, entropy, contrast, homogeneity, correlation, sum-average, varianre studies are needed to investigate bone marrow heterogeneity with regard to aging and disease. Objective Adverse maternal outcomes and perinatal complications are associated with overt and subclinical maternal hypothyroidism. It is not clear whether these complications also occur in women with isolated hypothyroxinemia during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of isolated hypothyroxinemia on maternal and perinatal outcomes during pregnancy. Methods This study included data from 2,864 pregnant women in the first trimester (67 women with isolated hypothyroxinemia, 784 euthyroid women) and the second trimester (70 women with isolated hypothyroxinemia, 1,943 euthyroid women) of pregnancy. Maternal serum samples were collected in the first and second trimesters to examine thyroid hormone concentration. Hypothyroxinemia was defined as a normal maternal thyroid-stimulating hormone concentration with a low maternal free thyroxine concentration and negative thyroid autoantibodies. The following maternal outcomes were recorded gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes mellitus, placenta previa, placental abruption, prelabor rupture of membranes, and premature delivery. Perinatal outcomes, including fetal growth restriction, fetal distress, low birth weight, intrauterine fetal death, and malformation. The incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes and perinatal complications was compared between women in the first trimester and second trimester with isolated hypothyroxinemia. Results There were no significant differences in the incidence rates of adverse maternal outcomes and perinatal complications between patients in the first and second trimesters with isolated hypothyroxinemia. Conclusion The results of this study indicate that isolated hypothyroidism does not increase the incidence of adverse maternal outcomes and perinatal complications.Mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) is one of the most economically-important marine crabs in China. However, research on mechanisms of reproductive regulation is not sufficient. Vitellogenesis-inhibiting hormone (VIH) is a member of the crustacean hyperglycemia hormones (CHH) family, which plays an essential role in the regulation of gonadal development and maturation in crustaceans, and current studies on the regulation of Vih transcription in crabs are relatively rare. Our previous studies on the transcriptional regulation of mud crab Vih (SpVih) have proved that the binding site of Oct4/Sox9 transcription factor may be the key region for positively regulating the expression of SpVih. In this study, the electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) experiment confirmed that the nuclear protein extracted from the eyestalk could bind to the key region of SpVih promoter, and these specific bindings were dependent on the presence of Oct4/Sox9 binding sites. Two specific binding complex bands were detected in the superaction. Background Depressive symptoms are common comorbidities in schizophrenia. However, the effect of APOE E3 on depressive symptoms has never been investigated in an aging Chinese population with schizophrenia. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the effects of APOE E3 on blood lipid metabolism and depressive symptoms in elderly schizophrenics in China. Methods Three Hundred and one elderly schizophrenics (161 males, age ranges from 60 to 92 years, with an average age of 67.31 ± 6.667) were included in the study. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). APOE gene polymorphism was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We assessed the correlations of GDS and serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) with APOE genotypes. Results The concentration of LDL in the Homozygous APOE E3 group was significantly higher than that in the non-homozygous APOE E3 group, while the scores of GDS of the Homozygous APOE E3 group were lower than that in the non-homozygous APOE E3 group. Using partial correlation analysis and controlling age, gender, duration of disease, and hyperlipidemia, we found that the scores of GDS were significantly correlated with LDL (r = -0.194, p = 0.016). Conclusions APOE E3 is associated with less depressive symptoms and higher serum LDL in Chinese elderly patients with schizophrenia, and there is a negative correlation between depressive symptoms and LDL.Background Prolonged static whole-body roll-tilt has been shown to bias estimates of the direction of gravity when assessed by static paradigms such as the subjective visual vertical and the subjective haptic vertical. Objective We hypothesized that these shifts are paradigm-independent and thus predicted a post-tilt bias as well for self-adjustments along perceived vertical (subjective postural vertical, SPV). Rutin clinical trial Likewise, rotatory optokinetic stimuli, which have been shown to shift the SPV when presented at the time of adjustments, may have an lasting effect on the SPV, predicting a shift in the perceived direction of gravity in the direction of the optokinetic rotatory stimulation. Methods Self-adjustments along perceived vertical by use of a motorized turntable were recorded at baseline and after 5 min of static whole-body roll-tilt (orientation = ±90°, adaptation period) in 10 healthy human subjects. During adaptation subjects were either in darkness (no OKN stimulation) or were presented a full-field rotatory optokinetic stimulus (velocity = ±60°/s).
