A prospective uncontrolled before- and after study was conducted among under five years children with acute malaria (n = 300) and a control group (n = 20) within the same age brackets. The serum activities of liver enzymes such as aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) were measured in patients and control subjects. The study observed an inverse relationship between mean HB and parasitaemia (mean HB level of 10.34 ± 0.14 versus parasitaemia less then 10,000 parasites/μL as against 8.06 ± 0.16 versus parasitaemia ≥10,000 parasites/μL). The mean levels of AST, ALT, ALP and GGT were higher (p less then 0.0001) in the serum of the infected children before treatment compared with post treatment. Moreover, the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve was applied to establish that HB level at 10.9 g/dL predicted liver dysfunction with the area under the curve (AUC) being 0.75 ± 0.03 (P less then 0.0001). Consequentially, the capability of two novel sequential pre-frying treatments were applied to potato, beetroot and parsnip snacks to inhibit the formation of acrylamide, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), glyoxal (GO) and methylglyoxal (MGO) was investigated. Data revealed that immersion in cold tap water for 2 min followed by blanching at 70 ± 2 °C for 2 min (Cold soak, hot soak, (CSHS)) as well as soaking in a 0.01M CaCl2 solution for 2 min followed by blanching at 70 ± 2 °C in 0.1M citric acid for 2 min were both effective pre-treatments for potato crisps, simultaneously decreasing acrylamide concentration under the benchmark level of 750 μg/kg and lowering GO content by 55.19 and 54.67% and MGO concentration by 39.17% and 81.62%, respectively. CSHS was the only efficient treatment for concurrent mitigation of acrylamide (-41.64%) and HMF (-88.43%) with little GO and MGO development in beetroot. Sequential cold soak in 0.01M calcium chloride and hot soak in a 0.1M citric acid solution has been effective in decreasing acrylamide in alternative crisps. However, this led to an increase in HMF, 30 and 20-fold respectively from the initial concentration. Data reveal that the tested mitigation strategies are vegetable specific.

The reported prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) varies widely across India. Given the short-term, long-term, and multigenerational health impacts of GDM, understanding its frequency and risk factors is important for population screening strategies. We estimated the prevalence of GDM and determined associated risk factors in rural, central India, where data is sparse.

We conducted a cross-sectional study of a convenience sample of 575 pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) clinics at Jan Swasthya Sahyog's (JSS) outreach clinics in rural Chhattisgarh, India. Study participants underwent a non-fasting 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) between 24-28 weeks gestation. Using Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group of India (DIPSI) criteria, a 2-hour post-OGTT glucose ≥140 mg/dL was used to diagnose GDM.

We found 11 patients (1.9%) who met diagnostic criteria for GDM. Median age, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure were higher in those with GDM (26 vs 23 years, p = 0.02; 117 vs 106 mmHg, p = 0.04, 77 vs 68 mmHg, p < 0.01, respectively). Pre-hypertension was associated with increased odds of GDM on multivariate analysis (OR 4.0, 95% CI 1.1, 14.8). BMI was not associated with GDM. With appropriate management there were no differences in fetal complications between GDM and normal glucose tolerance (NGT) groups.

Pragmatics is the ability to use language in different contexts and its development has crucial implications, e.g., social inclusion and professional attainments. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of pragmatic ability using the Language Pragmatic Abilities (APL Medea), a battery composed by five different tasks Comprehension of Metaphors, Implicit meaning, Comics, Situations and Colors Game (a perspective taking task). Eighteen children with early CI, belonging to 3 different age groups (6; 11-7; 11, 8; 0-8; 11 and 9; 0-9; 11 years-old), and twenty-four children with typical development (Control Group) participated to the study. We also investigated how the precocity of CI, i.e., age of first implantation, may affect the pragmatic development.
