mproves in COPD patients recovering from acute exacerbation irrespective of hospitalization need. Its use an additional outcome remains to be further elucidated.KEY MESSAGESRoutine implementation of an ICF set for chronic respiratory diseases can enhance a patient-centered approach in rehabilitation for different severity conditions.Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) seems to improve global disability measured with the Respiratory ICF Maugeri core set in COPD patients recovering from acute exacerbation irrespective of hospitalization need, suggesting the use of ICF set as additional PR outcome. The description, through the ICF language, of rehabilitative needs of patients, coming "from-Home" and "from-Hospital" settings, could help staff and instrument organization.Self-injurious thoughts have been associated with psychiatric morbidity and suicide. Little is known about psychosocial factors associated with self-injurious thoughts among people newly diagnosed with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined whether food insufficiency, mental health symptoms, or social support were associated with recent self-injurious thoughts among people newly diagnosed with HIV in Mozambique. The sample included 2001 PLWH aged ≥ 18 newly diagnosed with HIV at 10 health clinics in Mozambique between April 2013 and June 2015. Data were collected at time of HIV diagnosis. selleck inhibitor Multivariable logistic regression modeled the association of social support, affective mental health symptom severity, somatic mental health symptom severity, and food insufficiency on recent self-injurious thoughts. Ten percent of respondents reported recent self-injurious thoughts, which was higher among women than men (11% vs 7%). In multivariable analyses, food insufficiency [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.7 (95% CI 1.3, 2.2)], and low [aORvs no = 4.8, 95% CI 1.7, 13.4) and moderate/high affective symptom severity [aORvs no = 8.7, 95% CI 2.8, 27.6) were associated with greater odds of self-injurious thoughts. Interventions to address self-injurious thoughts should consider accompanying psychosocial stressors. Longitudinal research to examine mechanisms through which psychosocial stressors are associated with self-injurious thoughts is warranted. The importance of altered glycosphingolipid (GSL) metabolism is increasingly gaining attention as a characteristic of multiple chronic kidney diseases. Previously, we reported elevated levels of GSLs and neuraminidase (NEU) enzyme activity/expression in the urine or kidney of lupus patients and lupus-prone mice, and demonstrated NEU activity mediates the production of cytokines by lupus-prone mouse primary mesangial cells. This mediation occurs in part through TLR4 and p38/ERK MAPK signalling in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and lupus serum (LS). However, the precise role of NEU1, the most abundant NEU in the kidney, is incompletely known. In this study, we investigated the effect of genetically reduced Neu1 levels in vitro and in vivo. Mesangial cells from non-autoimmune prone Neu1+/- C57BL/6 mice had significantly reduced NEU activity, cytokine expression and cytokine secretion in response to LS and LPS, thereby suggesting reducing Neu1 expression may reduce the inflammatory response in lupus nephritlylated N-glycan levels and potential role of NEU1 with respect to established nephritis (late disease) in lupus-prone mice bears further investigation. For internal fixation of proximal femoral fractures, a screw is commonly placed into the femoral head; therefore, mechanical matching of the femoral head and screw is important. This article proposes an elastoplastic numerical model of the femoral head that takes nonlinear deformation and cancellous bone heterogeneity into account. Force-depth curves from finite element analysis based on the model were compared with those from macroindentation experiments. The maximum difference between the indentation depth shown by the finite element model and that found with macroindentation testing was 5.9%, which demonstrates that the model is valid.

This article examines the influence of social networks on selected aspects of mental health following the outbreak of the coronavirus.

We linked data from a post outbreak telephone survey in 2020 by the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, with baseline data from SHARE Wave 6 (2016) (

= 33,485). Two mental health measures (depression and anxiety) were regressed on social network variables relevant to the Covid-19 crisis (frequency of face-to-face contact and frequency of contact through electronic means), controlling for confounders. Interactions of age group and social networks were considered. Baseline mental health was controlled, focusing the analysis on post-outbreak mental health change.

Face-to-face network contact significantly reduced negative mental health changes while electronic contact significantly increased them. The age interactions were insignificant. Country differences were observed.

The findings suggest that face-to-face social networks can moderate the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on important aspects of mental health.

Older adults providing unpaid care to a relative or friend during the COVID-19 pandemic may have diminished self-efficacy in managing their own chronic illness, especially in the context of more complex self-management. We evaluated whether adults aged 50 and older with caregiving roles are more likely to report reduced illness self-efficacy since the pandemic, and whether this link is exacerbated by a higher number of conditions.

Participants (105 caregivers and 590 noncaregivers) residing in Michigan (82.6%) and 33 other U.S. states completed one online survey between May 14 and July 9, 2020.

Controlling for sociodemographic and health characteristics, stressors related to COVID-19, and behavioral and psychosocial changes since the pandemic, caregivers were more likely than noncaregivers to report reduced illness self-efficacy when they had a higher number of chronic conditions.

These findings highlight the importance of maintaining caregivers' self-care during the COVID-19 pandemic and in future public health crises.
