Pseudocapillaria (Ichthyocapillaria) bumpi n. sp. (Nematoda Capillariidae) is described from specimens infecting the digestive tract of the West African lungfish, Protopterus annectens (Owen) (Lepidosireniformes Protopteridae).

Nematodes were collected in Karingani Game Reserve, Southern Mozambique and studied using light microscopy; obtained sequences of the 18S ribosomal (18S rRNA) gene used for phylogenetic studies.

The new species is assigned to Pseudocapillaria Freitas, 1959 by having a stichosome consisting of a single row of stichocytes and ventrolateral lobes on the male tail as well as by lacking spines on the specular sheath, caudal alae, a membranous caudal bursa, and a lateral expansion of the caudal end. It is also assigned to the sub-genus Ichthyocapillaria Moravec, 1982 by having a membrane between the ventrolateral lobes and by lacking a vulvar appendage. Pseudocapillaria (I.) bumpi n. sp. differs from its nominal congeners by having a comparatively large body size with relatively long spicule, bearing the thin membrane non-extending further than ventrolateral lobes in males and relatively smaller eggs without protruding polar plugs. It is the 20th species of the genus, the first from the Afrotropical Realm, and the first from any lungfish species. Phylogenetic analyses suggested that P. (I.) bumpi is deeply nested in a clade that associates species of the genera Pearsonema, Aonchotheca and Baruscapillaria.

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) aims to improve disease control in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Selleckchem Orlistat However, the success of PR-programs depends on the patients' participation and willingness to cooperate. Taking the patients' preferences into consideration might improve both of these factors. Accordingly, our study aims to analyze patients' preferences regarding current rehabilitation approaches in order to deduce and discuss possibilities to further optimize pulmonary rehabilitation.

At the end of a 3 weeks in-house PR, patients' preferences concerning the proposed therapies were assessed during two different time slots (summer 2015 and winter 2015/2016) in three clinics using a choice-based conjoint analysis (CA). Relevant therapy attributes and their levels were identified through literature search and expert interviews. Inclusion criteria were as follows PR-inpatient with asthma and/or COPD, confirmed diagnosis, age over 18 years, capability to write and read German, written informed consent obtained. The CA analyses comprised a generalized linear mixed-effects model and a latent class mixed logit model.

A total of 542 persons participated in the survey. The most important attribute was sport and exercise therapy. Rehabilitation preferences hardly differed between asthma and COPD patients. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as well as time since diagnosis were found to have a significant influence on patients' rehabilitation preferences.

Patients in pulmonary rehabilitation have preferences regarding specific program components. To increase the adherence to, and thus, the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs, these results must be considered when developing or optimizing PR-programs.

Reliable and accurate measurement of gene expression in tissue is dependent on preserving RNA integrity and the quantitative nature of RNAscope. The purpose of this study was to determine if the quantitative nature of RNAscope was retained following processing and carmine staining of mammary gland whole-mounts, which are commonly used to identify lesions, such as hyperplasia and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). We were concerned that handling and procedures required to visualize microscopic disease lesions might compromise RNA integrity and the robustness of RNAscope. No effect on the quantitative abilities of RNAscope was detected when mammary gland whole-mounts were pre-screened for lesions of interest prior to RNAscope. This was determined in comparison to tissue that had been formalin-fixed and paraffin embedded (FFPE) immediately after collection. The ability to pre-screen whole-mounts allowed unpalpable diseased lesions to be identified without labor-intensive serial sectioning of tissue samples to find diseased tissue. This method is applicable to evaluate mammary gland whole-mounts during normal mammary gland development, function, and disease progression.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unparalleled changes to patient care, including the suspension of cancer surgery. Concerns regarding COVID-19-related risks to patients and healthcare workers with the re-introduction of major complex minimally invasive and open surgery have been raised. This study examines the COVID-19 related risks to patients and healthcare workers following the re-introduction of major oesophago-gastric (EG) surgery.

This was an international, multi-centre, observational study of consecutive patients treated by open and minimally invasive oesophagectomy and gastrectomy for malignant or benign disease. Patients were recruited from nine European centres serving regions with a high population incidence of COVID-19 between 1 May and 1 July 2020. The primary endpoint was 30-day COVID-19-related mortality. All staff involved in the operative care of patients were invited to complete a health-related survey to assess the incidence of COVID-19 in this group.

In total, 158 patients were included in the study (71 oesophagectomy, 82 gastrectomy). Overall, 87 patients (57%) underwent MIS (59 oesophagectomy, 28 gastrectomy). A total of 403 staff were eligible for inclusion, of whom 313 (78%) completed the health survey. Approaches to mitigate against the risks of COVID-19 for patients and staff varied amongst centres. No patients developed COVID-19 in the post-operative period. Two healthcare workers developed self-limiting COVID-19.

Precautions to minimise the risk of COVID-19 infection have enabled the safe re-introduction of minimally invasive and open EG surgery for both patients and staff. Further studies are necessary to determine the minimum requirements for mitigations against COVID-19.
