Imaging biomarkers support the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We aimed to determine whether combining automated brain volumetry on MRI and quantitative measurement of tau deposition on [18F] THK-5351 PET can aid discrimination of AD spectrum. From a prospective database in an IRB-approved multicenter study (NCT02656498), 113 subjects (32 healthy control, 55 mild cognitive impairment, and 26 Alzheimer disease) with baseline structural MRI and [18F] THK-5351 PET were included. Cortical volumes were quantified from FDA-approved software for automated volumetric MRI analysis (NeuroQuant). check details Standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) was calculated from tau PET images for 6 composite FreeSurfer-derived regions-of-interests approximating in vivo Braak stage (Braak ROIs). On volumetric MRI analysis, stepwise logistic regression analyses identified the cingulate isthmus and inferior parietal lobule as significant regions in discriminating AD from HC and MCI. The combined model incorporating automated volumes of selected brain regions on MRI (cingulate isthmus, inferior parietal lobule, hippocampus) and SUVRs of Braak ROIs on [18F] THK-5351 PET showed higher performance than SUVRs of Braak ROIs on [18F] THK-5351 PET in discriminating AD from HC (0.98 vs 0.88, P = 0.033) but not in discriminating AD from MCI (0.85 vs 0.79, P = 0.178). The combined model showed comparable performance to automated volumes of selected brain regions on MRI in discriminating AD from HC (0.98 vs 0.94, P = 0.094) and MCI (0.85 vs 0.78; P = 0.065).Although many ureteral stents are commercially available, the actuality of encrustation is yet to be elucidated in humans. This study compared the Tria Ureteral Stent with PercuShield and the Polaris Ultra Ureteral Stent with HydroPlus Coating for short-term encrustation formation. Eighty-four patients, who required ureteral stent placement after ureteroscopy, were randomized into two stent groups. After stent removal on postoperative day 14, the encrustation volume on the stent surface was measured by micro-computed tomography. The primary outcome was the inner luminal encrustation volume. Secondary outcomes were encrustation volume on the outer or total surfaces and occurrence of adverse events. Clinical factors related to encrustation were also assessed as a post-hoc analysis. Finally, of the 82 patients analyzed, 75 (91.5%) had encrustation in the inner lumen of the stent. The difference in median inner encrustation volume between the Tria and Polaris Ultra stents was comparable (0.56 vs. 0.37 mm3, P = 0.183). There was no difference observed in the encrustation volume on the outer/total surfaces and stent-related adverse events. In both ureteral stents, the shaft body showed significant inner luminal encrustation compared to the proximal or distal loop (all, P  less then  0.05). Dyslipidemia (P = 0.027), elevated urine pH (P = 0.046), and crystalluria (P = 0.010) were associated with encrustation formation. The Tria and Polaris Ultra stents had similar efficacy for preventing encrustation in the short-term. Further studies are required to compare their long-term patency.A mathematical model based on heat and mass transfer processes in the porous wick of electronic cigarettes was established to describe the atomization of e-liquids according to max liquid temperature, vaporization rate and thermal efficiency in a single puff. Dominant capillary-evaporation effects were defined in the model to account for the effects of electrical power, e-liquid composition and porosity of the wick material on atomization and energy transmission processes. Liquid temperature, vaporization rate, and thermal efficiency were predicted using the mathematical model in 64 groups, varying with electrical power, e-liquid composition and wick porosity. Experimental studies were carried out using a scaled-model test bench to validate the model's prediction. A higher PG/VG ratio in the e-liquid promoted energy transfer for vaporization, and the e-liquid temperature was comparatively reduced at a relatively high power, which was helpful to avoid atomizer overheating. Compared with the other factors, wick porosity affected the thermal efficiency more significantly. The vaporization rate increased with a higher wick porosity in a certain range. The modelling results suggested that a greater wick porosity and a higher PG ratio in e-liquids helped to improve the overall thermal efficiency. In this work, we assess the self-sealing and swelling ability of the compacted granular bentonite (GB) under an inorganic salt environment and induced overburden stresses from the landfill waste. The laboratory permeation tests with high ionic strength salt solutions reveal that the GB fails to seal and exhibits a significant mechanical collapse under different applied stresses. The applicability of GB in the form of geosynthetic clay liners as the bottom liner facilities in landfills that produce high ionic strength salt leachates, therefore, remains a serious concern. We propose an additional barrier system based on kaolin, for the first time, to address this problem. The proposed kaolin-GB layered system performs satisfactorily in terms of its sealing and swelling ability even in adverse saline conditions and low overburden stresses. The kaolin improves the osmotic efficiency of the self and also helps the underlying GB layer to seal the inter-granular voids. The estimated design parameters by through-diffusion test suggest that the kaolin-GB layered system effectively attenuates the permeant flux and suitable as a landfill liner.Multiportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for major lung resection causes less immunochemokine production compared to thoracotomy. Whether uniportal VATS is similarly associated with lower early postoperative circulating levels of immunochemokines compared to multiportal VATS have not been studied. Selected patients who received uniportal or multiportal VATS major lung resection were recruited. Blood samples were collected preoperatively and on postoperative days 1 and 3 for enzyme linked immunosorbent assay of serum levels of Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1, Insulin Growth Factor Binding Protein (IGFBP)-3, and Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP)-9. A linear mixed-effects models were used to analyze the effects of uniportal VATS on the postoperative circulating chemokine levels. From March 2014 to April 2017, 68 consecutive patients consented for the prospective study and received major lung resection by either uniportal VATS (N = 29) or multiportal VATS (N = 39) were identified. Uniportal VATS major lung resection was associated with lower post-operative levels of TIMP-1 and MMP-9 compared to multiportal VATS after controlling for the effects of the corresponding baseline level and the time of follow-up measurement.
