The seeds of dried longan, one of the major processed fruits in Thailand, contain several bioactive compounds. In this study, we developed longan wine by incorporating its seeds during juice preparation and evaluated the antioxidant activities and volatile compounds in different conditions. The results suggested that Saccharomyces cerevisiae EC-1118 was suitable for fermentation of longan juice supplemented with 50% seed and 20% initial soluble solids at an optimal temperature of 30 °C. Different yeast strains showed various extents of antioxidant activities; however, the fermentation temperature and initial soluble solids of longan juice had little effect on the inhibition of reactive species. Antioxidant activities were significantly increased with increasing seed content. selleck Dominant volatile compounds, which were independent of the winemaking conditions, were found to be phenethyl alcohol, 2,3-butylene glycol, 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde, ethyl hydrogen succinate, and 4-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol. These compounds highly influenced the antioxidant activities of longan wine produced by incorporating the seeds. The aim of this randomised, placebo-controlled, 3-way blinded study was to determine the effect on GIS symptoms, pain and anxiety of acupressure applied for a total of 12 min, as 3 min at each of the ST25, CV12, TH6, and HT7 acupuncture points, at 0, 4 and 8 h after laparoscopic cholecystectomy operation. The research data were collected using a patient data collection form, the Numeric Pain Intensity Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The patients were evaluated in respect of the time to first flatus and defecation, pain and the State-Trait Anxiety points at 0, 4, and 8 h postoperatively. The application of acupressure was determined to have signficantly reduced acute postoperative pain and shortened the time to defecation (p less then 0.05). The application of acupressure can be recommended in the nursing interventions following laparoscopic cholecystectomy to reduce acute pain and shorten the time to defecation. The limited cytotoxicity of immune cells facilitates a successful establishment of pregnancy. However, the association between cytotoxic granules and unexplained repeated implantation failure (uRIF) remains unkown. Twenty-one fertile controls and 54 patients with uRIF were included in this study. The pregnancy outcomes were monitored at different gestational periods. The peripheral blood lymphocytes were detected using specific monoclonal antibodies by flow cytometry. The percentage of perforin+ (Pfr+), granzyme B+ (GrB+), or granulysin+ (Gnly+) lymphocytes was not significantly different among fertile controls, uRIF patients with successful pregnancy outcomes, and uRIF patients with pregnancy failure. The percentage of GrB+ γδ-T cells in lymphocytes was markedly higher in uRIF patients with implantation failure and clinical pregnancy failure than that in uRIF patients with a corresponding successful pregnancy outcome. A four-tier risk model showed that the risk of suffering clinical pregnancy failure in uRIF patients among high risk tier (83.3 %), normal risk tier (65.0 %) and low risk tier (39.1 %) was elevated by 2-4 fold compared with uRIF patients among lowest risk tier (20.0 %). In addition, the percentage of GrB+ NK cells in lymphocytes tended to decrease in uRIF patients with pregnancy failure. The AUC of the combined indicator with GrB+ γδ-T cells and GrB+ NK cells was increased than that of GrB+ γδ-T cells and GrB+ NK cells for predicting clinical pregnancy failure. In conclusion, the frequency of GrB-expressing γδ-T and NK cells in peripheral blood could serve as a predictor of clinical pregnancy failure in patients with uRIF.Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) for mental disorders, using application-based (app) technology capable of passive and ambient data collection, has been insufficiently evaluated and validated with rigorous, adequately-powered, high-quality studies. Herein, we sought to validate the mind.me application for the assessment of depressive symptoms in adults. Adults (ages 18-65) who self-identified as having clinically significant depressive symptoms [i.e. Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) ≥ 5] utilized the mind.me app-a mobile phone technology that collects data passively and continuously, and is capable of integrating broad multimodal data [e.g., location variance (e.g. GPS), behavioural (e.g. social network activity), and communication data (e.g. SMS texting, phone calls)]. The primary outcome was predictive accuracy (i.e. convergent validity with depressive symptom measurement, as captured by the PHQ-9). 200 subjects were enrolled in the study (mean age 46 ± 12.71). The average PHQ-9 score was 12.8 ± 6.9. The predictive accuracy of the mind.me app was 0.91 ± 0.06. The sensitivity was 0.98 and the specificity was 0.93. The mind.me app was rated by 200 users as highly usable and informative to their illness. The mind.me app exhibits robust predictive accuracy in detecting depressive symptoms in adults with clinically relevant depressive symptoms. The mind.me app more specifically demonstrates convergence with the PHQ-9.Down syndrome is the most common genomic disorder of intellectual disability and is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. Several genes in this chromosome repress mitochondrial biogenesis. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether early overexpression of these genes may cause a prenatal impairment of oxidative phosphorylation negatively affecting neurogenesis. Reduction in the mitochondrial energy production and a lower mitochondrial function have been reported in diverse tissues or cell types, and also at any age, including early fetuses, suggesting that a defect in oxidative phosphorylation is an early and general event in Down syndrome individuals. Moreover, many of the medical conditions associated with Down syndrome are also frequently found in patients with oxidative phosphorylation disease. Several drugs that enhance mitochondrial biogenesis are nowadays available and some of them have been already tested in mouse models of Down syndrome restoring neurogenesis and cognitive defects. Because neurogenesis relies on a correct mitochondrial function and critical periods of brain development occur mainly in the prenatal and early neonatal stages, therapeutic approaches intended to improve oxidative phosphorylation should be provided in these periods.
