Colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) have been recently spotlighted as building blocks for various nanostructured devices. Their collective properties have been exhibited by arranging them on a substrate to form assembled NPs. In particular, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is an emerging fabrication method for such nanostructured films. To maximize the benefits of this method, further studies are required to fully elucidate the key parameters that influence the NP deposition. Herein, two key parameters are examined, namely (i) the aging of colloidal NPs and (ii) the charge formation by surface ligands. The aging of Cu2-xS NPs changes the charge states, thus leading to different NP deposition behaviors. The SEM images of NP films, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential results demonstrated that the charge control and restoration of interparticle interactions for aged NPs were achieved via simple ligand engineering. The charge control of colloidal NPs was found to be more dominant than the influence of aging, which can alter the surface charges of the NPs. AZD1080 chemical structure The present results thus reveal that the charge formation on the colloidal NPs, which depends on the surface ligands, is an important controllable parameter in EPD.Stroke is one of the leading causes of long-term disability. During ischemic stroke, glutamate is released, reuptake processes are impaired, and glutamate promotes excitotoxic neuronal death. Astrocytic glutamate transporter 1 (GLT-1) is the major transporter responsible for removing excess glutamate from the extracellular space. A translational activator of GLT-1, LDN/OSU 0212320 (LDN) has been previously developed with beneficial outcomes in epileptic animal models but has never been tested as a potential therapeutic for ischemic strokes. The present study evaluated the effects of LDN on stroke-associated brain injury. Male and female mice received LDN or vehicle 24 h before or 2 h after focal ischemia was induced in the sensorimotor cortex. Sensorimotor performance was determined using the Rung Ladder Walk and infarct area was assessed using triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining. Males treated with LDN exhibited upregulated GLT-1 protein levels, significantly smaller infarct size, and displayed better sensorimotor performance in comparison to those treated with vehicle only. In contrast, there was no upregulation of GLT-1 protein levels and no difference in infarct size or sensorimotor performance between vehicle- and LDN-treated females. Taken together, our results indicate that the GLT-1 translational activator LDN improved stroke outcomes in young adult male, but not female mice.Previous studies have described increased circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). Here, we aimed first to confirm this information using a simple, but sensible fluorescent assay, and second to investigate whether total cfDNA is associated with circulating factors known to be linked to the pathophysiology of HDP as well as with poor maternal-fetal outcomes. We studied 98 women with healthy pregnancies (HP), 88 with gestational hypertension (GH), and 91 with preeclampsia (PE). Total DNA was extracted from plasma using the QIAamp DNA blood mini kit and quantified using Quant-iT™ PicoGreen® dsDNA fluorescent detection kit. We found higher total cfDNA levels in GH and PE (197.0 and 174.2 ng/mL, respectively) than in HP (140.5 ng/mL; both p less then 0.0001). Interestingly, total cfDNA levels were elevated in both male and female-bearing pregnancies diagnosed with either HDP, and in more severe versus less severe HDP cases, as classified according to responsiveness to antihypertensive therapy. In addition, total cfDNA was independently associated with HDP, and a cutoff concentration of 160 ng/mL provided appropriate sensitivity and specificity values for diagnosing GH and PE compared to HP (70-85%, both p less then 0.0001). Moreover, high total cfDNA was associated with adverse clinical outcomes (high blood pressure, low platelet count, preterm delivery, fetal growth restriction) and high prohypertensive factors (sFLT-1, sEndoglin, MMP-2). These findings represent a step towards to the establishment of cfDNA as a diagnostic tool and the need to understand its role in HDP.This study examines the moderating role of interdependent self-construal between mindfulness, emotion regulation, and psychological health, with emotion regulation as a mediator. A total of 187 Chinese emerging adults completed self-reported measures, including mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, and interdependent self-construal. Our findings indicate moderation effects of interdependent self-construal between (i) mindfulness and cognitive reappraisal, (ii) cognitive reappraisal and life satisfaction, (iii) expressive suppression and life satisfaction, and (iv) expressive suppression and depressive symptoms. Based on bootstrapping and path analyses, cognitive reappraisal mediated the relation between mindfulness and psychological health, including depressive symptoms and life satisfaction, regardless of the level of interdependent self-construal. In addition, mindfulness was not related to expressive suppression, regardless of the level of interdependent self-construal. Based on these findings, researchers and practitioners should pay attention to the differential associations between mindfulness, emotion regulation strategies, and psychological outcomes as a function of interdependent self-construal during emerging adulthood.Poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) was synthesized via conventional radical polymerization. Then, functionalization of PIA was carried out by an esterification reaction with the heterocyclic groups of 1,3-thiazole and posterior quaternization by N-alkylation reaction with iodomethane. The modifications were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), as well as ζ-potential measurements. Their antimicrobial activity was tested against different Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. After characterization, the resulting polymers were incorporated into gelatin with oxidized starch and glycerol as film adjuvants, and dopamine as crosslinking agent, to develop antimicrobial-active films. The addition of quaternized polymers not only improved the mechanical properties of gelatin formulations, but also decreased the solution absorption capacity during the swelling process. However, the incorporation of synthesized polymers increased the deformation at break values and the water vapor permeability of films.
