This study aimed to detect the expression and distribution of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGFR-2 receptor (VEGFR-2), and erythropoietin (EPO) proteins in small intestinal tissues of 50-day-old, newborn, and adult yaks. The results provide basic data for the study of the relationship between adaptability and age of plateau yak.

Small intestine tissues from healthy adult, 50-day-old, and newborn yak were collected and embedded in paraffin sections. Histological features were observed by H&E staining. The expression of VEGF, VEGFR-2, and EPO proteins were detected by immunohistochemical staining.

Immunohistochemical results showed that of the expression VEGF, VEGFR-2, and EPO were detected in the small intestinal villi of yaks at all ages. The EPO expression level in the jejunum and duodenal villous epithelial cells of newborn yaks was significantly higher than that of 50-day-old and adult yaks. The EPO expression level in ileum villous epithelial cells of 50-day-old yaks was significanthe physiological regulation of yak intestines in hypoxic environments. SCE has various biological effects, such as anti-inflammation and antioxidation, and it is commonly found in animal feed. The present research is aimed at investigating the reproductive endocrine influence of SCE in male Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) by feeding SCE containing food. In addition, in vitro Leydig cell culture was conducted to clarify the mechanism of SCE's influence. Our results showed that SCE feed extended the latency to the first neck grab, decreased male quail testis and epididymis weights, cloaca gland size, and reduced serum testosterone concentrations. Steroidogenic enzymes 3βHSD, 17βHSD, P450c17, and P450scc gene expression in the testis were decreased in the SCE groups. Western blot analysis showed decreased 3βHSD in the testis after feeding SCE. Isolated testicular interstitial cells cultured with SCE and ovine-LH suppressed testosterone secretion and 3βHSD gene expression. In conclusion, SCE as a feed additive has an impact on the sexual behavior and reproductive function of male Japanese quail, with the suppression of steroidogenesis in the Leydig cell. Our results may provide beneficial information to the livestock management and the poultry industry.BACKGROUND Amyloidosis is a clinical condition characterized by the extracellular deposition of insoluble, abnormal amyloid fibrils in various body tissues. It is generally categorized into 2 forms - localized and systemic - with a wide range of signs and symptoms. This case report discusses the localized amyloidosis involvement of the oral cavity and its treatment. CASE REPORT A 65-year-old woman presented to the oral medicine clinic reporting painless tongue enlargement, which has been slowly progressing over several years, leading to difficulty in tongue movement, eating, and swallowing. Extra-oral examination showed a prominent lower lip with rubbery consistency. Intra-oral examination revealed a significantly enlarged tongue almost filling the whole oral cavity with dental indentations evident on all tongue surfaces and multiple, deep ulcerative craters of various sizes ranging from 2 to 5 mm in diameter. Histopathological examination under light microscope using hematoxylin and eosinophil and Congo red stain were diagnostic for amyloidosis. Further investigation with the Rheumatology Department, including renal and liver function tests, as well as echocardiography, were conducted and ruled out systemic involvement of other body organs. The patient was treated with weekly intra-lesional triamcinolone injections, with significant improvement. CONCLUSIONS We report a rare case of localized amyloidosis presenting as macroglossia. Although the most effective management in tongue amyloidosis is surgical resection, conservative management in cases of localized oral amyloidosis presenting as macroglossia with weekly intra-lesional triamcinolone injections can be an effective approach, providing patients with better quality of life. Click here for the corresponding questions to this CME article.BACKGROUND This study identified risk factors associated with reinfection and created a scoring system designed for patients with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) who have undergone prosthetic resection and spacer implantation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients who underwent 2-stage revision for PJI from January 2010 to December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed in this study. Patients were divided into 2 groups infection recurrence and infection cure. Demographic and clinical information, laboratory test results, and radiological images that were potentially associated with infection were obtained and analyzed. RESULTS Seven independent risk (protective) factors for infection recurrence in patients with PJI who underwent 2-stage hip revision surgery were identified C-reactive protein level, type of bacterial infection, age, immunosuppression, albumin/globulin ratio, glucose level, and magnetic resonance imaging findings. Finally, a weighted scoring system of 100-mark system was established and the area under the curve was 0.965 (95% confidential interval=0.947-0.983). The predictive scores for low risk (≤30%), moderate risk (31-69%), and high risk (≥70%) of infection recurrence were ≤45, 46-77, and ≥78, respectively. CONCLUSIONS For patients with PJI who had already undergone joint resection and spacer implantation, this newly established scoring system might help determine the accurate risk of infection recurrence after a definitive new prosthesis implantation. Patients with scores greater than 78 points would be considered very likely to have an infection recurrence. Therefore, the second-stage revision surgery should be changed to an additional anti-infection treatment or a debridement surgery instead of a definitive prosthesis implantation surgery.

Taxanes form the mainstay of breast cancer therapy in the curative setting. Taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy (TIPN) is a common toxicity and confers significant morbidity with no validated therapies. Literature detailing TIPN is inconsistent in reporting its frequency, severity, risk factors, impact upon treatment course, and management practices.

A retrospective chart review was performed including 348 early-stage breast cancer patients undergoing weekly paclitaxel therapy between 2010 and 2020 in the adjuvant or neoadjuvant setting. The frequency, severity, and impact on treatment from TIPN were analyzed during treatment and at one year follow-up. Clinicopathological and patient factors were collected to identify potential risk factors.

279 out of 348 patients (80.2%) developed TIPN of any grade. One-year follow-up was available for 232 of the original 279 TIPN patients (83.2%). Of these, 52 patients (22.4%) exhibited persisting TIPN of any grade. The presence and severity of TIPN during treatment was significantly associated with a lower median dose intensity (100% versus 82.5% for non-TIPN and all-grade TIPN respectively, p<0.001). Neoadjuvant treatment (p=0.038) and body surface area (BSA, p=0.035) were independently associated with TIPN during treatment. Increased age (p<.001) and pre-treatment diabetes (p=0.009) were associated with TIPN at one-year follow-up.

TIPN is common in breast cancer patients undergoing weekly paclitaxel therapy. TIPN results in patients receiving significantly lower dose intensity due to dose reductions and premature treatment cessation. Future prospective studies in similar cohorts are warranted, with a focus on long-term outcomes.
