Clinical implications including perioperative education and follow-up management are discussed.

Platelet inhibitory therapy is prescribed to prevent arterial thromboembolism in patients with atherosclerotic disease. Although taken by millions of people, around 30% are resistant to the treatment they are being prescribed.

To determine whether symptoms of cerebral ischemia, or pre-operative cerebral emboli, in patients admitted for a carotid endarterectomy were associated with resistance to aspirin or clopidogrel.

Venous blood from 133 patients immediately before carotid endarterectomy (CEA) was analyzed for resistance to aspirin and clopidogrel by multiplate impedance aggregometry. The number of emboli/hour entering the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery was counted by transcranial Doppler (TCD) on the day before surgery in 33 of these patients.

Resistance was found in 21 (26.3%) of 100 patients taking aspirin and 14 (42%) of 33 taking clopidogrel. Pictilisib molecular weight Mean (sd) residual platelet aggregation was significantly higher at 41.9(32) Au in patients who had suffered recent symptoms of cerebral ischemia compared with 30.8(16) Au in asymptomatic patients (p = 0.012). Residual platelet aggregation also correlated significantly with the number of emboli/hour counted by TCD in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (r = 0.45, p = 0.009).

Antiplatelet resistance was associated with the frequency of cerebral emboli and recent symptoms of cerebral ischemia in patients with carotid disease. Definitive clinical studies are needed to explore whether testing for antiplatelet resistance should be undertaken routinely in patients starting platelet inhibitory therapy for cardiovascular disease.

The virus overlays existing health disparities among farmworkers, but the population is not homogenous. One group of workers that may be even more vulnerable to the transmission of COVID-19 is the H-2A temporary worker population, because they have less control over their physical environments than domestic farmworkers, who may obtain their own housing and transportation. The H-2A program was recently altered at the federal level to ensure a steady flow of essential workers that can protect the nation's food supply during a crisis. Yet, in spite of increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in states with significant H-2A worker populations, the federal rule that temporarily expanded the H-2A program did not address needs to protect workers' health. Although the CDC has developed recommendations for the agricultural industry to safeguard against COVID-19, most health and safety regulation for farmworkers are left to state and local agencies that may lack knowledge or resources to effectively address the needs of a specialized growing workforce such as H-2A workers. More research is needed on the disparate health and safety needs of H-2A workers to assess how policy can be tailored to reduce the transmission of the COVID-19 virus among the population.Hydroxyl radical (•OH) is considered to be the most damaging among reactive oxygen species. Although afew studies have reported on its effects on growth and stress adaptation of plants, no detailed studies have been performed using •OH in germination and early seedling growth under abiotic stresses. Here we report a single seed treatment with •OH on germination and seedling growth of Arabidopsis and rice under non-stressed (ambient) and various abiotic-stressed conditions (chilling, high temperature, heat, and salinity). The treatment resulted in faster seed germination and early seedling growth under non-stressed conditions, and, interestingly, these effects were more prominent under abiotic stresses. In addition, Arabidopsis seedlings from treated seeds showed faster root growth and developed more lateral roots. These results show apositive and potential practical use for •OH in model and crop plants for direct seeding in the field, as well as improvement of tolerance against emerging stresses. Therefore, the identification and quantification of Salmonella spp. is important for monitoring the level of fecal shedding or tissue colonization in infected animals and animal products. We developed and evaluated a quantitative PCR (qPCR) method on spiked sheep tissue and fecal samples for the detection and quantification of Salmonella spp. Without the use of a pre-enrichment step, the qPCR limit of detection (LOD) results for sheep fecal (4 × 104-6 × 103 cfu/g) and tissue (4 × 105-4 × 103 cfu/g) samples were not adequate for detection purposes. With the inclusion of a 6-h pre-enrichment step in buffered peptone water (BPW), the LOD was 9 cfu/g (2.57 × 101 copies/g) in sheep feces, and 5.4 cfu/g (3.22 copies/g) sheep tissue. Comparison of the 6-h BPW qPCR method with a 24-h mannitol-selenite-cystine broth enrichment culture method using spiked samples revealed a sensitivity of 91% and 92%, respectively, and a specificity of 100% for both methods. The correlation was significant between the quantity (copies/mL) of Salmonella spp. in BPW at 6 h and at 0 h, allowing semiquantitative analysis. Our results demonstrate that, following inclusion of a 6-h pre-enrichment step in BPW, qPCR is semiquantitative with improved LODs of Salmonella spp. in sheep fecal and tissue samples.
