Control, inhibitor, mi-NC, VEGF-C, inhibitor + si-NC, and inhibitor + VEGF-C siRNA groups were used to further analyze the mechanism of miR-27b on VEGF-C; the above experiments were repeated. In contrast to model group, miR-27b inhibitor could significantly promote the healing of scalded skin, alleviate the pathological status of scalded, and promote the angiogenesis and proliferation (p  less then  0.05). In vitro, miR-27b inhibitor evidently promoted cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis and increased the expression of VEGF-C, EGF genes, and protein, while miR-27b mimics significantly reversed the above trends. Further studies shown that downregulation of miR-27b expression can promote the proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis of HMEC-1 cells by promoting the expression of VEGF-C. miR-27b promotes angiogenesis and skin repair in scalded rats through regulating VEGF-C expression.Saliva could be an optimal sample for non-invasive cancer detection, as it contains plenty of proteins and metabolites which can reflect the health status of an individual. Moreover, pairing it with high-sensitivity, label-free detection techniques could prove successful for early cancer diagnosis. In this study, we explore the enhancement of salivary characteristic Raman bands by using label-free, ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based on gold nanoparticles. SERS maps were acquired from dry samples of saliva supernatant mixed with Au colloidal nanoparticles, which was then pipetted on clean glass slides. The SERS spectra presented a high variability of signal intensities and frequency shifts. However, several reproducible SERS spectra showing well-resolved bands were obtained at certain locations on the maps, where Au nanoparticles clustered together during the air-drying. The healthy and oral cancer saliva could be differentiated using principal components analysis based on several SERS bands assigned mainly to amino acids and proteins. Moreover, thiocyanate Raman modes were detected in saliva samples of both smoking and non-smoking volunteers and cancer patients. The analysis indicated that the cancer group displayed an overall higher level of the 2126 cm-1 band area assigned to C-N stretching vibrations of thiocyanate.BACKGROUND Tourette syndrome (TS) and persistent motor/vocal tic disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions characterised by the chronic presence of motor and/or vocal tics. Patients with TS often present with co-morbid disorders, especially attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (which tends to improve after childhood), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (which can persist in adulthood). We set out to explore pharmacotherapy for tics in adult patients with TS and persistent motor/vocal tic disorders, as well as its relationship with the presence of co-morbid conditions. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the clinical characteristics and pharmacotherapy of 192 adult patients with TS (n = 187), persistent motor tic disorder (n = 3) and persistent vocal tic disorder (n = 2) attending a specialist clinic in the UK. RESULTS Anti-dopaminergic medications (n = 65) and alpha-2-agonists (n = 50) were the most commonly prescribed pharmacotherapy for tic management. A sub-group analysis revealed that co-morbid obsessive-compulsive disorder and sub-threshold obsessive-compulsive behaviours were significantly more common in patients treated with anti-dopaminergic medications than patients taking alpha-2-agonists (p = 0.013 and p = 0.047, respectively). selleck CONCLUSIONS The use of pharmacotherapy options for tic management observed at a specialist clinic for adults with TS reflects guideline recommendations. We found that the presence of co-morbid obsessive-compulsive disorder/behaviours correlates with the choice of anti-dopaminergic medications over alpha-2-agonists, in line with available evidence on the efficacy of anti-dopaminergic medications for the treatment of specific tic-related behavioural symptoms. The near-miss effect in gambling refers to a losing situation that is (or perceived to be) close to a win by the gambler. This effect is one of the many cognitive distortions that can occur during gambling games. The main objective of the present study was to analyze the electrophysiological correlates of the near-miss effect via an event-related potential (ERP) study examining four distinct gambling outcomes win, full miss, near-miss before the payline, and near-miss after the payline. This study comprised 23 healthy voluntary participants (10 women) with ages ranging between 19 and 34 years (M = 22.5; SD = 3.65). All participants completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen and played a computerized slot machine, programed to induce the near-miss effect and specifically designed for an ERP study. By splitting the near-miss effect in two subtypes (before and after the payline), increased feedback-related negativity (FRN) was found for the near-misses after the payline in comparison to losses and also to near-misses before the payline. Results also indicated an increased P300 amplitude for the near-misses before the payline compared both with losses and with near-misses after the payline. The results suggest that both FRN and P300 present different sensitivities to near-miss subtypes, suggesting a payline effect that is not demonstrated when the data of near-misses before and after the payline are analyzed together. This is the first study to analyze the effect of the near-miss subtype in an ERP study and confirms the findings of previous behavioral studies.Management options for newly diagnosed vestibular schwannoma (VS) include observation, surgery, or radiation. There are no randomized trials to guide management of patients with VS. This article is a short review of the role of stereotactic radiosurgery in management of newly diagnosed VS.Simulations of neural activity are commonly based on differential equations. We address the question what can be achieved with a simplified discrete model. The proposed model resembles artificial neural networks enriched with additional biologically inspired features. A neuron has several states, and the state transitions follow endogenous patterns which roughly correspond to firing behavior observed in biological neurons oscillatory, tonic, plateauing, etc. Neural interactions consist of two components synaptic connections and extrasynaptic emission of neurotransmitters. The dynamics is asynchronous and event-based; the events correspond to the changes in neurons activity. This model is innovative in introducing discrete framework for modeling neurotransmitter interactions which play the important role in neuromodulation. We simulate rhythmic activity of small neural ensembles like central pattern generators (CPG). The modeled examples include the biphasic rhythm generated by the half-center mechanism with the post-inhibitory rebound (like the leech heartbeat CPG), the triphasic rhythm (like in pond snail feeding CPG) and the pattern switch in the system of several neurons (like the switch between ingestion and egestion in Aplysia feeding CPG).
