In Brazil, inequalities in access may interfere with cancer care. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of race on breast cancer mortality in the state of São Paulo, from 2000 to 2017, contextualizing with other causes of death.

A population-based retrospective study using mortality rates, age and race as variables. Information on deaths was collected from the Ministry of Health Information System. Only white and black categories were used. Mortality rates were age-adjusted by the standard method. For statistical analysis, linear regression was carried out.

There were 60,940 deaths registered as breast cancer deaths, 46,365 in white and 10,588 in black women. The mortality rates for 100,000 women in 2017 were 16.46 in white and 9.57 in black women, a trend to reduction in white (p = 0.002), and to increase in black women (p = 0.010). This effect was more significant for white women (p < 0.001). The trend to reduction was consistent in all age groups in white women, and the trend to increase was observed only in the 40-49 years group in black women. For 'all-cancer causes', the trend was to a reduction in white (p = 0.031) and to increase in black women (p < 0.001). For 'ill-defined causes' and 'external causes', the trend was to reduce both races (p < 0.001).

The declared race influenced mortality rates due to breast cancer in São Paulo. The divergences observed between white and black women also were evident in all cancer causes of death, which may indicate inequities in access to highly complex health care in our setting.

Barthel Index (BI) is one of the most widely utilized tools for assessing functional independence in activities of daily living. Most existing BI studies used populations with specific diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's and stroke) to test prognostic factors of BI scores; however, the generalization of these findings was limited when the target populations varied.

The aim of the present study was to utilize electronic health records (EHRs) and data mining techniques to develop a generic procedure for identifying prognostic factors that influence BI score changes among community-dwelling elderly.

Longitudinal data were collected from 113 older adults (81 females; mean age = 84 years, SD = 6.9 years) in Hong Kong elderly care centers. Visualization technologies were used to align annual BI scores with individual EHRs chronologically. Linear mixed-effects (LME) regression was conducted to model longitudinal BI scores based on socio-demographics, disease conditions, and features extracted from EHRs.

The visualiz changes and identify the influencing factors. The constructed long-term surveillance system provides reference data in clinical practice and help healthcare providers manage the time, cost, data and human resources in community-dwelling settings.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure (CHF) are at high-risk of readmission after hospital discharge. There is conflicting evidence however on whether timely follow-up with a primary care provider reduces that risk. The objective of this study is to understand the perspectives of patients with COPD and CHF, and their caregivers, on the role of primary care provider follow-up after hospital discharge.

A qualitative study design with semi-structured interviews was conducted among patients or their family caregivers admitted with COPD or CHF who were enrolled in a randomized controlled study at three acute care hospitals in Ontario, Canada. Participants were interviewed between December 2017 to January 2019, the majority discharged from hospital at least 30days prior to their interview. Interviews were analyzed independently by three authors using a deductive directed content analysis, with the fourth author cross-comparing themes.

Interviews with 16 particregivers valued in-person follow-up with their primary care provider following discharge from hospital because of the trust established through pre-existing longitudinal relationships. Our results suggest policy makers should focus on improving rates of primary care provider attachment and systems supporting informational continuity.

Hamilton proposed a model for this system with morphs determined by alternative alleles. This has an equilibrium where the proportion of winged males equals the proportion of females dispersing unmated; i.e. the proportion of matings that they obtain. Previously, we have shown qualitative support for this prediction across nine wing-dimorphic fig wasp species. Here I test the quantitative prediction in the fig wasp Pseudidarnes minerva. In addition, some fig wasp species that lack winged males, but have two wingless morphs, show a conditional strategy with morph determination influenced by the number of wasps developing in a patch. I also test for this alternative pattern in the wing-dimorphic Pn to fig-level mating opportunities. However, these conditional cases do not involve wing polymorphism. Male polymorphism is common and variable in fig wasps and has evolved independently in multiple lineages with apparently different underlying mechanisms.

Malnutrition in early life may affect health in later life. The associations between malnutrition and serum uric acid (SUA) and hypertension were inconsistent. The present study aimed to investigate the individual and combined association between famine exposure and serum uric acid and hypertension in middle-aged and older Chinese.

Data were selected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) Wave2011. The analytic sample included 9368 individuals aged 45 to 90. Differences between baseline characteristics and famine exposure/SUA level were evaluated using the Chi-square test, t-test, and F-test. Then, the differences in the prevalence of hypertension between characteristic groups was also estimated by the Chi-square and t-test. Finally, multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models examined association of famine exposure and serum uric acid with odds of prevalence of hypertension.

A total of 9368 individuals were enrolled in the study, 4366 (46.61%) and 5002 (53.39%) were male serum uric acid with hypertension in middle-aged and elderly Chinese.

Understanding the specificity and flexibility of the algal symbiosis-host association is fundamental for predicting how species occupy a diverse range of habitats. Here we assessed the algal symbiosis diversity of three species of larger benthic foraminifera from the genus Amphistegina and investigated the role of habitat and species identity in shaping the associated algal community.

We used next-generation sequencing to identify the associated algal community, and DNA barcoding to identify the diatom endosymbionts associated with species of A. lobifera, A. lessonii, and A. link2 radiata, collected from shallow habitats (< 15 m) in 16 sites, ranging from the Mediterranean Sea to French Polynesia. Next-generation sequencing results showed the consistent presence of Ochrophyta as the main algal phylum associated with all species and sites analysed. We show that local habitat is the main factor influencing the overall composition of the algal symbiont community. However, host identity and the phylogenetic relationship among hosts is relevant in shaping the specific endosymbiont diatom community, suggesting that the relationship between diatom endosymbiont and hosts plays a crucial role in the evolutionary history of the genus Amphistegina. The capacity of Amphistegina species to associate with a diverse array of diatoms, and possibly other algal groups, likely underpins the ecological success of these crucial calcifying organisms across their extensive geographic range.

Domestication alters several phenotypic, neurological, and physiological traits in domestic animals compared to those in their wild ancestors. Domestic ducks originated from mallards, and some studies have shown that spot-billed ducks may have also made minor genetic contributions to domestication. Compared with the two ancestral species, domestic ducks generally differ in body size and bone morphology. In this study, we performed both genomic and transcriptomic analyses to identify candidate genes for elucidating the genetic mechanisms underlying phenotypic variation.

In this study, the duck genome data from eight domestic breeds and two wild species were collected to study the genetic changes during domestication. And the transcriptome data of different tissues from wild ducks and seven domestic ducks were used to reveal the expression difference between wild and domestic ducks.

Using fixation index (Fst) algorithm and transcriptome data, we found that the genes related to skeletal development had high Fst values in wild and domestic breeds, and the differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched in the ossification pathway.
