The aim of this study is to analyze bloodstream infections from tunneled-cuffed permanent catheter in hemodialysis patients. METHODS An observational prospective study was carried out and 79 hemodialysis patients with tunneled-cuffed permanent catheter were enrolled. Patients were divided into those with bloodstream infections from tunneled-cuffed permanent catheter and those without. Their clinical and laboratory characteristics were compared. An original tunneled-cuffed permanent catheter lock therapy sequence was carried out combined with systemic antibiotic therapy. In case of antibiotic resistance, the tunneled-cuffed permanent catheter was removed. RESULTS The patients affected by bloodstream infections from tunneled-cuffed permanent catheter were 16/79 (20.3%). The bloodstream io be the most efficient measures. Infections of other organs and the presence of peripheral obstructive arterial disease are the most important risk factors for bloodstream infections from tunneled-cuffed permanent catheter.BACKGROUND A well-known transcriptional regulator of the proto-oncogene c-Myc, far-upstream element (FUSE) binding protein 1 (FUBP1) has been demonstrated by previous work to be aberrantly expressed in lots of cancers and plays a critical role in tumor progression; however, its expression and function in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) remains unclear. METHODS Evaluations with immunohistochemistry, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot were performed to assess FUBP1 expression. The correlations of FUBP1 expression levels with various clinicopathological factors were evaluated with univariate and multivariate analyses. In addition, the role of FUBP1 in TSCC proliferation was studied in TSCC cells by silencing FUBP1. The role of FUBP1 on proliferation and apoptosis was confirmed by cell counting Kit-8, colony formation, cell cycle, and cell apoptosis assays. RESULTS Immunohistochemistry, qRT-PCR and Western blot results showed FUBP1 expression was higher in TSCC tissues in comparison with adjacent non-cancerous tissues (P less then 0.05), as well as in patients with advanced-stage disease or cervical lymph node metastasis (P less then 0.001). The 5-year survival rate was significantly lower in the group with high FUBP1 expression than in that with low FUBP1 expression (P=0.035). FUBP1 expression was also an independent predictor for overall survival in TSCC patients, and was closely related to poor prognosis. FUBP1 knockdown inhibited cancer cell proliferation, and induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. CONCLUSION FUBP1 was overexpressed in TSCC, and correlated with TSCC cell proliferation and poor prognosis. The objective of this study is to create an integrated system capable of conducting the follow-up, through mobile communication (smartphones), of patients with chronic diseases such as hypertension. An iHealth equipment certified by the Food and Drug Administration is used. The blood pressure values from users are uploaded via Internet and stored in an integral system for processing. The monitoring system developed not only informs users about their disease status but also sends them alerts generated during monitoring. This work uses the telecommunication technology existing through smartphones. The integrated system developed ensures the follow-up of the blood pressure of a large number of users. In addition, this system can be further applied to diseases such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The system developed was easy to use and efficient to monitor patients with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure.OBJECTIVES Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder, which is associated with recurrent oxygen desaturation during sleep. It has already been shown that nocturnal hypoxia may lead to cochlear dysfunction in patients with OSA. Less is known whether hypoxia during sleep also impacts vestibular function in those patients. Thus, the aim of the presented study was to assess a potential vestibulotoxic effect of nightly desaturations with hypoxia in patients with OSA by investigating a possible correlation between respiratory parameters and vestibular function tests. METHODS A total of 56 patients were included in the study and underwent a fully attended cardiorespiratory polysomnography (PSG). Vestibular function was assessed using video head impulse test to evaluate horizontal semicircular canal function and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) to measure otolith function. Descriptive data analysis was conducted and correlation analysis between selected PSG parameters and the results of vestibular testing was performed using Kendall τ coefficient.
