Bladder cancer (BC) is the ninth recurrent neoplasm in the world. In Iran, incidence of BC is the third most common among men. Few dietary patterns are related to reduced carcinogenesis and consequently are amenable to modification in order to reduce the BC risk. Adherence to the traditional Nordic diet, as measured by the Healthy Nordic Food Index (HNFI), have shown a beneficial effect on chronic disease prevention, including cancer. The principal objective of this study was to investigate the association between HNFI and the odds of BC in a case-control study, in Iran.

The present case-control study was performed on 100 eligible cases and 200 controls of patients ≥45 years old referred to three referral hospitals in Tehran. Dietary intakes are assessed by a valid 168-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The relationship between HNFI and BC is estimated using the logistic regression tests.

Whether fish consumption is associated with all-cause, cardiovascular (CVD), ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke mortality remains inconclusive. We examined the association of fish consumption with all-cause, cardiovascular (CVD), ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke mortality in older men and women in south China.

A total of 18,215 participants including men and women without CVD at baseline (2003-2006) from Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study (GBCS) were included and followed up till December 2017. Deaths were identified through record linkage with the Death Registry. Information on fish consumption was obtained using a food frequency questionnaire.

During an average follow-up of 11.4 (standard deviation = 2.1) years, 2,697 deaths occurred, including 917 total CVD, 397 IHD and 374 stroke deaths. After adjusting for potential confounders, compared with fish consumption of 0-3 servings/week (i.e., 0-21 g/day, one serving = 50 g), consumption of 4-6 servings/week (29-43 g/day) showed significantly lower risks of all-cause and CVD mortality (hazards ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.85 (0.76, 0.95) and 0.77 (0.64, 0.93), respectively), but the reduced risk of IHD mortality (HR (95% CI) 0.80 (0.60, 1.07)) was not significant. Consumption of 7-10 servings/week or higher showed no association with all-cause, CVD, IHD, and stroke mortality.

Intrauterine growth restriction and low birth weight (LBW) have been widely reported as an independent risk factor for adult hypercholesterolaemia and increased hepatic cholesterol in a sex-specific manner. However, the specific impact of uteroplacental insufficiency (UPI), a leading cause of LBW in developed world, on hepatic cholesterol metabolism in later life, is ill defined and is clinically relevant in understanding later life liver metabolic health trajectories.

Hepatic cholesterol, transcriptome, cholesterol homoeostasis regulatory proteins, and antioxidant markers were studied in UPI-induced LBW and normal birth weight (NBW) male and female guinea pigs at 150 days.

Hepatic free and total cholesterol were increased in LBW versus NBW males. Transcriptome analysis of LBW versus NBW livers revealed that "cholesterol metabolism" was an enriched pathway in LBW males but not in females.
