In each conceptual model, hydraulic conductivities related to the geomaterials composing the aquifer are affected by uncertainty. It is found that (a) the type of conceptual model employed to characterize the aquifer structure strongly affects the probability of system failure and (b) uncertainties associated with the ensuing conductivity fields, even as constrained through model calibration, lead to different impacts on the variability of hydraulic head levels at the springs depending on the conceptual model adopted. The results of the study demonstrate that the proposed approach enables one to (i) quantify the risk associated with springs depletion due to alternative strategies of aquifer exploitation; (ii) quantify the way diverse sources of uncertainty (i.e., model and parameter uncertainty) affect the probability of system failure; (iii) determine the optimal exploitation strategy ensuring system functioning; and (iv) identify the most vulnerable springs, where depletion first occurs.Bald patches (BPs) are known to accelerate and simultaneously mitigate the process of desertification. However, the mechanisms of these two synchronous actions are little studied in high desert and cold systems; and the incidence of BPs on alpine meadows degradation in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) of China is still unavailable. This study first aims to investigate the soil properties and the erodibility of the system BPs-VPs at the Beiluhe basin in QTP. Then, we adopted dye tracer and HYDRUS-2/3D methods to interpret the water infiltration patterns from point scale to slope scale. The results show that the mattic epipedon layer on the top soil (0-20 cm) of VPs directly reduced the impact of raindrops on alpine meadow; and the adhesion of root system in VPs prevented the soil particles from stripping and washing away by runoff. The soil particles in BPs were easily eroded by rainfall, lowering the ground level of BPs relative to the ground level of VPs. The two patches therefore alternated to form an erosion interface where marginal meadow was likely detached by raindrops, and washed away through runoff. selleck chemicals llc The saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of surface soil (0-10 cm) was 124% higher in BPs than the VPs. Thereby, BPs caused a high spatial variation of infiltration and runoff in QTP. Moreover, this difference in Ks between the two patches conducted to a lateral flow from BPs to VPs, and to soil layers with different water contents. These findings highlight that the water flow features can potentially disturb the processes of freezing-thawing, frost heaves, and thaw slump; and accelerate the alpine meadow degradation. Therefore, land cover such as crop and vegetation should be applied over the bare soil surface to prevent the degradation of alpine meadow. This study presents a high-throughput (HTP) micronucleus assay in multi-well plates with an automated evaluation for risk assessment applications. The evaluation of genotoxicity via the micronucleus assays according to international guidelines ISO 21427-2 with Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) V79 cells was the starting point to develop our methodology. A drawback of this assay is that it is very time consuming and cost intensive. Our HTP micronucleus assay in a 48-well plate format allows for the simultaneous assessment of five different sample-concentrations with additional positive, negative and solvent controls with six technical replicates each within a quarter of the time required for the equivalent evaluation using the traditional slide method. In accordance with the 3R principle, animal compounds should be replaced with animal-free alternatives. However, traditional cell culture-based methods still require animal derived compounds like rat-liver derived S9-fraction, which is used to simulate the maonly optimized for CYP1A metabolization that may be improved with a modified production procedure. Future applications of ewoS9R go beyond the micronucleus assay, but further research is necessary.Emerging viruses are a major public health problem. Most zoonotic pathogens originate in wildlife, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), influenza, Ebola, and coronavirus. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus called SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Viruses are charged colloidal particles that have the ability to adsorb on surfaces depending on pH. Their sorptive interaction with solid particles has important implications for their behavior in aquatic environments, soils, sewage sludge, and other solid materials and their removal or concentration by water treatment processes. Current state of knowledge on the potential of wastewater surveillance to understand the COVID-19 pandemic is reviewed. This study also identified wastewater irrigation systems with a higher risk of COVID-19 transmission. Emphasis was placed on methodologies for the detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.Regrowth after fire is critical to the persistence of chaparral shrub communities in southern California, which has been subject to frequent fire events in recent decades. Fires that recur at short intervals of 10 years or less have been considered an inhibitor of recovery and the major cause of 'community type-conversion' in chaparral, primarily based on studies of small extents and limited time periods. However, recent sub-regional investigations based on remote sensing suggest that short-interval fire (SIF) does not have ubiquitous impact on postfire chaparral recovery. A region-wide analysis including a greater spatial extent and time period is needed to better understand SIF impact on chaparral. This study evaluates patterns of postfire recovery across southern California, based on temporal trajectories of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from June-solstice Landsat image series covering the period 1984-2018. High spatial resolution aerial images were used to calibrate Landsat NDVI trdesert-fringe chamise in soils of low clay content.Bioremediation of vanadium (V) (V(V)) for polluted groundwater is an emerging topic globally. With this study, microbial removal of V(V) was investigated by sawdust of pine used as a sole carbon source. The removal efficiency of V(V) reached up to 90.3% with anaerobic sludge as inocula and sawdust as the carbon source in nutrient solution. Microbial removal of V(V) could be enhanced by adding medical stone and phosphate rock, from 53.2% up to 82.6% in real groundwater. Microbiological analysis revealed such microbes as Thauera accumulated, which could contribute to V(V) reduction. Such functional species as Bacteroidetes vadinHA17 norank and Anaerolineaceae norank helped degradation of sawdust. In column experiments with domesticated sludge or indigenous microbes from soils, microbial V(V) removal efficiencies (on 26 d) with sawdust were around 58.7% (BS), 54.8% (BP) and 38.4% (BU), respectively. The study can offer a potential approach to microbially removing V(V) for contaminated groundwater and even for disposal of agricultural and forestry wastes.
