The absorption spectra of molecular organic chromophores in aqueous media are of considerable importance in environmental chemistry. In this work, the UV-vis spectra of benzoic acid (BA), the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid, in aqueous solutions at varying pH and in the presence of salts are measured experimentally. The solutions of different pH provide insights into the contributions from both the non-dissociated acid molecule and the deprotonated anionic species. The microscopic interpretation of these spectra is then provided by quantum chemical calculations for small cluster models of benzoic species (benzoic acid and benzoate anion) with water molecules. Calculations of the UV-vis absorbance spectra are then carried out for different clusters such as C6H5COOH·(H2O)n and C6H5COO-·(H2O)n, where n = 0-8. The following main conclusions from these calculations and the comparison to experimental results can be made (i) the small water cluster yields good quantitative agreement with observed solution experime that B-band of neutral BA is not sensitive to the solvent effects whereas the effect of the water on the C-band is significant. The water effects blue-shift this band up to ∼0.2 eV. Overall, the results demonstrate the ability to further our understanding of the microscopic interpretation of the electronic structure and absorption spectra of BA in aqueous media through calculations restricted to small cluster models.Herein, we report luminol-silicotungstic acid (STA) chemiluminescence (CL) for the first time. The luminol-STA system resulted in remarkable CL enhancement (65 times) compared with the known classical luminol-H2O2 system because of the generation of the strong oxidizing agent tungsten trioxide from STA. Based on the quenching effect of uric acid, the new CL system is applied for the sensitive and selective assay of uric acid in its pure state (LOD 0.75 nM) and in real human urine with excellent recoveries in the range of 99.6-102.3%. N-ERD patients often suffer from recurrent nasal polyps, severe asthma or also from urticaria. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively analyze the clinical efficacy of anti-IgE antibody treatment with omalizumab in patients with confirmed N-ERD. METHODS In the open trial with patients receiving verum patients with CRSwNP, confirmed N-ERD by oral or nasal ASA challenges, asthma or chronic urticaria were included in the study. Rhinological and pulmonary parameters were evaluated before and after 3, 6 and 9 months of therapy by rhinological questionnaires (CRS VAS-scores and RSOM-31), nasal polyp (NP)-, ACT-scores and FEV1 values. Urticaria activity was monitored clinically. N-ERD patients with aspirin desensitization were included as control group (follow-up 9 months). RESULTS In the omalizumab group 16 patients were included (10 female, 6 male, mean age 51 yrs). CRS symptoms, RSOM-31- and NP-score decreased significantly following omalizumab therapy compared to baseline. The ACT-score (MV 16.5 to 20.6) and FEV1values (MV 80 % to 89 %) improved significantly. No urticaria symptoms were reported after 3 months. Oral prednisolone therapy was required in one case and a repeated nasal sinus surgery in an additional case due to progression of NP. In the control group (8 female, 8 male, mean age 45 yrs) the NP-score was unchanged. CONCLUSIONS Omalizumab is an effective therapy option in N-ERD patients in a 9 month study period.BACKGROUND We explored the regulatory effects of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) LOC101060264 silencing mediated by shRNA on invasion and metastasis of human colon cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS Initially, 2 shRNA plasmids for LOC101060264 silencing - shRNA1 and shRNA2 - were introduced into LoVo cells. Following transfection, the expressions of LOC101060264, E-cadherin, and vimentin were determined. Next, to explore the regulatory effects of LOC101060264 silencing on cell growth, cell cycle, invasion, and migration abilities of LoVo cells, we performed MTT, flow cytometry, Transwell assay, and scratch assay, respectively. Furthermore, in nude mice with xenografted tumors, the tumor volume and weight were measured, and the expressions of PCNA, E-cadherin, vimentin, and MMP-9 in tumor tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS The level of E-cadherin increased and the level of vimentin decreased after LOC101060264 silencing mediated by shRNA1 and shRNA2 in LoVo cells. Silencing LOC101060264 repressed the migration, invasion, and proliferation of LoVo cells in vitro and inhibited tumor growth in nude mice in vivo.
