Three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) living at the southern limit of the species distribution range could possess specific morphological and physiological traits that enable these fish to live at the threshold of their physiological capacities. Morphological analysis was carried out on samples of sticklebacks living in different saline habitats of the Camargue area (Rhone delta, northern Mediterranean coast) obtained from 1993 to 2017. Salinity acclimation capacities were also investigated using individuals from freshwater-low salinity drainage canals and from mesohaline-euryhaline lagoons. Fish were maintained in laboratory conditions at salinity values close to those of their respective habitats low salinity (LS; 5 ‰) or seawater (SW; 30 ‰). Fish obtained from a mesohaline brackish water lagoon (BW; 15 ‰) were acclimated to SW or LS. Oxygen consumption rates and branchial Na+ /K+ -ATPase (NKA) activity (indicator of fish osmoregulatory capacity) were measured in these LS or SW control fish is protected by copyright. However, this type of assessment may not yield useful information if participants do not readily engage with leisure items. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a modified CSA that included additional treatment components (i.e., prompting, prompting plus differential reinforcement of alternative behavior). The modified CSA identified the treatment components and leisure items that were most effective for increasing leisure-item engagement and decreasing problem behavior for each participant. Modified CSA outcomes maintained during an extended treatment analysis in a natural setting and when intervention components were faded. © 2020 Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior.Hyphessobrycon chiribiquete n. sp. is described from the Río Caquetá drainage in Colombia and the Río Ucayali drainage in Peru, western Amazon. The new species is diagnosed from its congeners by having the following combination of characters a conspicuous narrow midlateral stripe, starting on sides of body behind the opercle near the lateral line; lateral stripe overlapped anteriorly with a vertically elongated humeral blotch; inner premaxillary teeth pentacuspid; margin of anal fin falcate in mature males, with a relatively well-developed anterior lobe. Small dermal injuries (8 mm biopsy) closed by 22 days post-wounding with a decrease in haematocrit. High-CO2 exposure (ΔpH = 1.4) did not influence healing rate or haematocrit. Combined, these data provide evidence that minimally invasive scientific procedures have short-term impacts on elasmobranch fishes even during exposure to a chronic stressor. Therefore, wound healing rates may not be strongly impacted by ocean acidification (ΔpH = 0.4). This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. This article is protected by copyright. The shift from zooplanktonic food items (Artemia nauplii) to a piscivorous diet did not occur at the same time for all individuals within the same cohort. Predation tests, conducted under controlled conditions (20°C; ad libitum feeding), showed that some larvae attacked fish prey as early as the age of 3 weeks [11.0 ± 1.3 mm total length (TL)], whereas others did not start until the age of 6 weeks (16.6 ± 1.9 mm TL). Piscivorous individuals were bigger, with larger heads, longer tails, higher acid protease and lower alkaline protease activities, than non-piscivorous conspecifics. In conclusion, high interindividual variability in morphological and digestive system developments linked to the development of predatory abilities could induce cannibalism in fish. © 2020 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles. We describe a 43-year-old woman with a 10-year history of grossly hyperkeratotic nodules which progressively extended over the right ring finger. These involuted leaving pale, atrophic skin in their wake. At presentation, the advancing border had an arciform series of nodules in the pattern of keratoacanthoma centrifugum marginatum. The presence of filiform keratinisation that encased the nail plate, gross onychogryphotic masses of keratin on the ventral finger surface and a flat nail-like plate of keratin on the dorsal finger surface were distinctive features. Skin biopsy showed epidermal acanthosis, gross papillomatous cutaneous horn formation that had onycholemmal features. The pathology differed from keratoacanthoma and was not crateriform or infundibulocystic. Although HPV was not detected on immunohistochemistry, pathogenesis may still represent an HPV-related transfection of onycholemmal keratin committed stem cells producing an onycholemmal variant of keratoacanthoma centrifugum marginatum. A conceptual model linked to advances in follicular stem cell biology is formulated to explore this case. © 2020 The Australasian College of Dermatologists.Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a heterogeneous inherited disease characterized by renal and extrarenal manifestations with progressive fluid-filled cyst development leading to end-stage renal disease. Semaglutide The rate of disease progression in ADPKD exhibits high inter- and intrafamilial variability suggesting involvement of modifier genes and/or environmental factors. Renal hypouricemia (RHUC) is an inherited disorder characterized by impaired tubular uric acid transport with severe complications, such as acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the two disorders have distinct and well-delineated genetic, biochemical, and clinical findings. Only a few cases of coexistence of ADPKD and RHUC (type 1) in a single individual have been reported. We report a family with two members an ADPKD 24-year-old female which presented bilateral renal cysts in utero and hypouricemia since age 5, and her mother with isolated hypouricemia. Next-generation sequencing identified two mutations in two genes PKD1 and SLC2A9 in this patient and one isolated SLC2A9 mutation in her mother, showing RHUC type 2, associated to CKD.
